I’ve done some inquiring into the Leafs potential cap space next season as well. I would imagine that Burke would bring back at least 1 or 2 of the UFAs for less money, probably Stemp and Primeau. But you’re still looking at 16-18 million in cap space for the summer. Don’t forget though, that the team will have to resign Gustavsson and White. I would put the Leafs cap space somewhere around 12-14 million for the summer for UFA acquisitions.

by birky on Oct 19, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

there are some good ones out there too
Savard, Marleau, Kovalchuck, Frolov
I could also see Poni getting resigned

but then Kulemin, Hanson, Big Phil, Mitchell and Tlusty will probably be looking at raises

none of those 5 guys are likely to get more than 1.5 mill per season.

by birky on Oct 19, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions

i think Kulemin and Tlusty will get around 2, the rest closer to 1.5
but even so 7.5 mill is a solid chunk of change. Not to mention a backup goalie and some utility players.
The Leafs will probably have about 8 mill to spend on one big name or 2 lesser players.

Yeah, there is no way either of them could get 2mil. Even if they went to arbitration they would probably get around or a bit below 1.5, and if they sign an offer sheet I’d take the picks and let them walk

Where is it on the Leafs? There will be no play-offs till there is one; ever heard of a team making that far without a captain…NO! I can digest another train wreck, but at least have a captain, so the team knows where to crash land.

One problem with this idea. I hate Blake as much as the next guy (probably a lot more) but an arguably proven vet gets demoted to the AHL because he’s in a slump will probably start a big wave of NMC around the league. Also, how many veteran players will be looking to sign with the Leafs if this happens?

I think the honest answer is Burke needs to try to trade Blake for anything, even a fifth round pick or a bad prospect.

If every GM says no, Burke needs to tell Blake he’s being waived unless he chooses to retire.

by JaredFromLondon on Oct 19, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

yes. and, being a “player’s GM” i’m fairly certain that’s exactly how it would go down.

it would be one thing if Blake were being a superpest out there and just buzzing around, using his speed to draw penalties while putting up some points. I don’t expect him to score 40 goals ever again. I don’t expect him to eclipse 25 ever again, truth be told.

the problem with him right now is that he seems to play on the perimeter too much, and the opposition knows that 9/10 shots is going to go wide or hit the goalie square in the chest.

Refusing To Bow To Your Standards Since 2006

i’m not sure this is correct. the buyout rules state that it’s 2/3 of the remaining salary spread out over twice the remaining number of years.

Blake has two years a 6 mill total (his contract was front loaded), which would be 4 million spread out over 4 years.

by birky on Oct 19, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that is the rule….

Hmph, Wonder what is up with their buyout calculator, I didn’t check the numbers I just ran it.

And if he was bought out on June 15th that would be after the season… so technically he would have just 1 season at 3Mil. So it would be 1.5 over 2 years.

the text portion

that you copied, is showing the “buyout cap hit” and not the total dollars spent on the buy out. More from capgeek:

Jason Blake is 36 years old on the buyout date of June 15, 2010, putting the total buyout cost at $4,000,000 spread over 4 years. His contract was originally valued at $20,000,000 with an annual cap hit of $4,000,000 beginning in 2007 and ending in 2012. The following is a season-by-season breakdown of the buyout. A negative buyout cap hit number indicates a credit.

Im confused.

All I was concerned was the cap hit that would result from the buyout.

Does the 2/3 salary spread over double the year rule on pertain to actual dollars spent by the club?

by JohnnyG on Oct 19, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

he’s got $6M and 2 yrs left.

all we need to know is the buyout is $4M over 4 years. The cap hit for those remaining two is not $1M, but $2M.

by blurr1974 on Oct 19, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

But why is the cap hit 2 Mil for those two years?

What is the rule as it pertains to the cap hit. I get why its 4Mil spread out over the 4 years which is 1 Mil a year actual cost to MLSE but why does the cap hit not reflect that like it does with Tucker’s contract?

Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...

by JohnnyG on Oct 19, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

His contract is still “on the books” for those two years, and the cap hit for them is that annual salary minus the buyout amount for that year.

The Skinny Fishbowl - Random Musings of a Hockey Fan

by SkinnyFish on Oct 19, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Ah just found it. Thanks Skinnyfish

    1. Take the actual salary due for each remaining year.
    2. Take the Averaged Player Salary (cap hit) for the current contract
    3. Calculate the buy-out amount (as described above)
    4. Spread the buy-out amount evenly over twice the remaining years of the contract
    5. Take the number in #1 and subtract the number in #4. This is the "buyout savings".
    6. Take the cap hit from #2 and subtract the buyout savings from #5.

Of course waiving him makes more sense, but how much control does Burke have over those (financial) matters? Does he have to go to the board for a decision like that? Would they let him basically throw out 2 million dollars? I know it’s not a lot of money to MLSE, but doesn’t it seem more like MLSE to save the 2 mill than make a smart hockey move?

Im sure MLSE reads the papers and hears the sports shows on the radio. They know people aren’t happy and I think would defer to their “Hockey Expert” that they brought in to make decisions like this.

So I live in NC and am planning on going to the Nov 19th game against the Hurricanes.

Lower bowl tickets in the corners are 45 bucks on stubhub.

Could you imagine that in Toronto?

by birky on Oct 19, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

that will never happen, there could be a nuclear war and zombies could roam the planet and you’d still be able to find 10000 Leaf fans willing to spend 400 bucks for lower bowl tickets

Scalpers always sell things at market value.

that would be logical but this is the media so we know that they haven’t figured that out yet

I’m not sure why everyone hates scalpers. Unless you’re MLSE you shouldn’t care either way.

You don’t have season tickets, you didn’t get any tickets in the ten seconds they were available for sale. Without scalpers you weren’t going to the game period.

so true…I have no issue with scalpers. They charge a bit much for my level of interest, but if I wanna go, it takes a miracle to get good seats without them

I mean it sucks, but the only way to “fix” scalpers would be for the Leafs to charge actual market value for their tickets.

There is the little point that scalpers have bought all the tickets, thereby causing the ticket shortage in the first place.
It’s kind of like saying, “drug dealers aren’t that bad, without them you couldn’t get drugs…….”

This.

Makes it especially bad when (as in the Ballard years) the scalpers have connections inside the organization. Also, they just bug me with the constant “who’s buying? who’s selling” shtick.

We need to start mugging them without violence. Who are they going to complain to?

They’re not causing anything. If they can sell the tickets at inflated prices, those tickets would be just as sold if they could only be had directly from the box office at face value. They don’t create a shortage, they just notice it and act on it.

There’s some sliminess in the way most of them do business, but in any functional way that’s meaningful to the buyer, the only difference between them and Ticketmaster is that the latter has MLSE’s blessing.

It doesn’t really work that way, but ok.

If you want to be mad about tickets be mad about Ticketmaster.

If I have any anger about ticket issues, Chemmy, rest assured it’s 100% with TicketMaster. How they haven’t been taken down by an anti-trust suit is just beyond me some days. I’m not mad at scalpers, they’re just using the cracks in the system to make a buck. I’m a firm believer in the invisible hand of the black market, not the fictional one that Econ. majors are always yapping about.
