Vancouver Province Fails At Life
Today's Province:
Shots can be a fuzzy statistic. The Detroit Red Wings have led the league for years. That's when it's a good stat. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been in the top-10 for years. That's when it's a bad one.
Sometimes it indicates which team is controlling play. Other times, it's only indicative of a van full of bricklayers launching rocks at a goalie from the roadside.
2008-09 Goals For: Toronto - 250, Vancouver - 246. Some days I really hate living here.

Wow...
And it’s only Wednesday. The game isn’t for three days yet. And they play Chicago tonight in the meantime. Somebody’s obsessed here. ;)

you'd think
that given how badly Chicago beat them in the playoffs, they wouldn’t look past tonight’s game. But now. Their obsession with Toronto is frightening.

I find so many things to enjoy here without the need to compare it to TO, you’d think the natives would as well.

It’s all of those Ontarians who’ve moved out to the West Coast and are pining away for flat land and fresh water seas. The true natives could care less about Toronto. And I’m telling you this as an American who used to live half an hour from the US-Canada border on the Washington State side just south of Vancouver.

Yes, but that’s only because the true natives are way too busy avoiding work, scoring really good pot, and trashing Robson Street. They don’t have time to read.

I worked with one of the kids who was down on Robson in ‘94- I should’ve ratted him out. Come to think of it, I never had any problem picking up work while I was there. Unfortunately, I needed 3-4 jobs just to pay rent.

true natives have intense hatred for Toronto, stemming from the fact that they think it gets way too much attention. Trust me. I’ve faced it more than once.

Canucks fans
Remind me of a homely girl who has a huge crush on you whose advances you reject. Years later, the girl will still be obsessed with you and passionately hate you for every little thing; meanwhile, every time this happens, you look at her go, “I’m sorry…..WHO are you? Have we met before?”
That is the relationship between Canuck fans and Leaf fans. Hatred mixed with constant pining for attention from us.

There are no Sens “fans”, only bandwagoners who hate the Leafs. Their hatred of the Leafs is so strong that they lobbied (successfully somehow) for the NHL to put a team in Ottawa just so they wouldn’t have to watch Leafs games anymore. Their plan worked but not very well, they figured the CBC would instantly fall in love with the Sens. Not very bright are these guys.

the best part of it all was that you had to bring a peice of canned food if you wanted to wear your leaf jersey to the games in ottawa. Im off on the facts but I beleive that the city Toronto donated like $5,000 anda ton of canned food and the city of ottawa wouldnt match or something like that

Did You Know?
That despite the fact the Leafs absolutely sucked en route to ten straight sub-.500 seasons (1980-81 to 1988-89), the Canucks had 15 straight (1977-78 to 1991-92) before, after and during that span?
Other than one fluke run in 1982, they didn’t amount to anything in the postseason, either.
And, we had Harold Ballard; what was their excuse? Just sayin.

Their three wins
have been against: Dallas (in a shootout after losing the lead in the last minute), Montreal and Minnesota.
Teams that are collectively 6-12-3.
They’ve lost to: Calgary (x2), Edmonton, Colorado, Columbus.
Teams that are collectively 22-7-3.
The Leafs seven losses have come to: NY Rangers (x2), Pittsburgh, Washington, Ottawa, Montreal, and Colorado.
Teams that are collectively 33-12-3. Subtract the OT loss to Montreal, that’s 30-7-3.

And because Vancouver’s opponents have been 28-19-6, compared to 33-12-3 for Toronto (.698 vs. .718), that’s probably helped cover up how bad they have been playing.

Good Stats or Bad Stats
They’re all just stats.
I think the more indicative stat in regards to Detroit would be their goals against… not their goals for.
Or shots… for that matter.

Stanley Cups Won can be a fuzzy statistic. The Detroit Red Wings have, after a run of 4 Stanley Cups in 12 years, 13 Stanley Cup. That’s when it’s a good stat. The Toronto Maple Leafs have, after a glorious history, won 13 Stanley Cup. That’s when it’s a bad one.
Sometimes it indicates which team has the better history. Other times, it’s only indicative of a van full of bricklayers launching rocks at a goalie from the roadside.

Did anyone catch the news on Savard and Gonchar
The East just got more interesting… Gonchar is out 4 to 6 weeks, and Savard is on IR with a broken foot.
Welcome back to the pack Pittsburgh, and say hello to injury problems when you’re already not playing that great Boston.
I’m pretty sure without Gonchar last year Pittsburgh was pretty average. Who knows how bad Boston will be without Savard AND no more Kessel.

We’ll see with Pittsburgh. I only say this because Goligoski, for all intents and purposes, has taken over as their number one defenceman on the PP. I suppose the Pens will put a forward on the other D spot. Not saying Gonchar wasn’t a huge difference maker (very underrated for his defensive skills), but at least he’ll return in the middle of the season.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Yeah
4 to 6 weeks isn’t that long… but it still won’t help them. He plays 24 minutes a night. That’s more time for the other D to chew up, and another D man to fill in as the 6th man? More minutes means more pressure, and frankly most teams tend to be worse when they lose their top guy.
Goligoski might be their top PP guy but he still only plays 21 minutes a game as their 2nd highest minute eater. Letang is at 20 or so.
It means more minutes for Eaton and McKee, and I have no idea who their number 7 guy is.

His ability to move the puck and defensive game was really missed a lot on the Pens when he was gone. I just think that the Pens are better prepared this time with Goligoski being up with the team full-time. But yes, the Pens should see some negative effect with Gonchar out.

Of course not, but Goligoski improved defensively from the few games I’ve seen of him this year. As such, I think the Pens can absorb the loss of Gonchar better this year by committee. John Mitchell
Had more points last year (29 to 27). Honest to god, John Mitchell.
When you are offensively as productive as John Mitchell, you suck. Plus, from him we get about the same defensive skill. But, only a fraction of the salary and food expenses!

Antropov sucked at them last year
Moore was pretty good at 54%…
we didn’t really lose much in the faceoff department other than that though.

They sent him to San Antonio, but the Coyotes have two prospect goalies there, and didn’t want to give him ice time over them., so he had to go to the AHL

ECHL you mean
but ok that makes sense.
The weirder piece is, the Ducks were using the Marlies for some of their AHL players, Mikkelsen specifically I think. Would have been funny if Pogge had ended up there again.

He's old
so he probably needs it.
Speak of old, I’m doing some crazy analysis by tracking every NHL player since the 1997-98 season by age and production… it’s taking a while though.
I’m basically trying to get some data that supports the idea that Burke is trying to have a team come together in 2 or 3 years of 24-25 year olds that are all hitting their prime around the same time. If he can get it to work it should be a beautiful thing.
But yeah I want data to back that up…

But it saves him being put on waivers, and if someone gets injured it keeps him from idling for too long so he can step into the void comfortably.

It's the only way they can get an older guy some games
without putting him on waivers.
The fact that they didn’t indicates to me that they still value him as an asset. I think if there was a trade to be made, it would be made whether or not he had a conditioning stint.

The Sens and Habs have legitimate rivalry excuses. And Alberta just hates Ontario and Toronto for political reasons.
The Canucks have had one playoff series against the Leafs ever. And Vancouver isn’t different from Toronto at all politically. So they’re just an epic fail.

Note to Vancouver fans: This thread is in no way, shape, or form “tampering”.
Although he should warn Mike Gillis too
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I apologize for this
And so late, but I’m just a contrarian at heart I suppose.
Firstly, according to the NHL the Leafs scored 244 regular season goals in 2008-09, not 250. Likewise, Vancouver scored 243, not 246 – a difference of one goal.
I also think it’s worth mentioning that Vancouver scored one fewer goal while shooting 268 fewer times then Toronto, meaning they had a much better shooting percentage.
In fact, Toronto’s team shooting percentage was 9.37%, good for 18th in the league. Vancouver’s was 10.41%, good for 5th in the league. The high end of the percentages was the Bruins’10.88%, and the low end was the Rangers’ 7.52%.
So, perhaps when we examine the numbers we see what the author was getting at, even if we don’t like it? That maybe even though the Leafs shoot a lot, and seem to score a lot, they don’t necessarily have the scoring prowess of, oh say, teams like Detroit and Vancouver?
Hell, Detroit’s team shooting percentage was .38 higher then Toronto’s even when firing 362 more shots then Toronto.
I’m just saying.
