Maybe not,
but if these guys are playing for contracts, they have a lot of work to do!
Tells me that either our cap hit next year will be WAAAY less, or there will be much movement before this year is done.

Normally you want guys on expiring contracts to take advantage of them having “contract years”.
Either way some guys on the roster will prove themselves useful or they’ll be gone.

at this point i hope Poni has an average year so we can re-sign him for cheap in the offseason. then he can turn into a beast next year.
aside from him, all the veterans can go. i’ll be curious to see what happens with the younger players (kulemin, tlusty, bozak, hanson, etc)
Bozak has another year on his contract, so he’s safe. And he’s also good.
I think Hanson gets re-upped as he is a prototypical 3rd line forward; big body, decent hands, etc….
The real question is what to do with Kulemin and Tlusty. If they can’t crack the club and put up some numbers this year, their future is definitely is jeopardy. Burke will probably sign 3 or 4 Top 6 forwards in free agency next year, and if Tlusty and Kulemin don’t show that they are of Top 6 quality, I think they become victims of the excess of ‘ok’ players on the roster and get shipped.

I’m still confused about why Kulemin is sitting.

Kulemin siiting:
especially considering the guy has more hits than almost all of the forwards in half the amount of games played. The guy can skate, forcheck and has a wicked shot. Get him in the lineup

True. Burke needs to realize that this year is a loss and that he should start giving the kiddos as much icetime as possible so they are ready next year. And he needn’t be worried about losing some players to waivers if they aren’t in his plans after July 1st, 2010.

According to CapGeek if the cap stays the same then at the beginning of the next offseason we will have $20million in cap space.
With our defensive core locked down for the forseeable future we should be able to afford to get at least 1 impact forward on the FA market, or knowing Burke trade for one….. assuming there are any to be had.
Capgeeks FA forwards for next year
Some names to highlight:
Kovlachuk, Rene Bourque, Marleau, Olli Jokinen, Savard, Andrew Ebbett, Frolov, Colby Armstrong

Atlanta is off to a decent start and they are apparently going to throw a ton of money at him, so yeah that’s not going to happen.
They have the cap space apparently. According to CapGeek they will have $35million in cap space.
So really it will all depend if the ownership will step up and give the money for both. I am going to assume they will considering they pretty much NEED Kovalchuk to survive as a franchise, and Armstrong is a good guy to keep around.

i know, this is why it is so difficult to acquire a franchise player without tanking a season. Which is also why burke did what he had to to get kessel, the closest thing to a franchise forward that the leafs could get their hands on. he had to jump at it at the time, considering he wasnt thinking draft lottery at all.

by Matt_Roberts on Oct 26, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions
To be honest, if the young guys we have coming up develop to their potential we shouldn’t need to tank a season really.
Kessel is already a proven top line player, Kadri definitely has the potential to be a top line guy, if we can get a Savard or a Marleau in the offseason, we will have 3 potential top line guys.
The team is built so that it could succeed in the future, now we just have to wait and see.
Savard would be awesome, but i have no read on what kinda money he’d want
Marleau will come the cheapest out of the big names unless someone who loses out on all the other top players throws a terribly large amount of cash at him

im not saying we have to tank, in fact ive always been against it, but it is a sure fire way to get some of the best hockey talent in the world. And honestly, have you really convinced yourself that Kadri and Kessel can compete witht he Ovechkins, Crosbys, Thorntons, Datsyuks of the world? I dont….. if the stanley cup is the ultimate goal our ‘elite’ talent isn’t nearly close enough to the talent that the legit contenders have and it would a miracle workmanlike effort to beat those teams in the playoffs
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"
by Matt_Roberts on Oct 26, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I never said Kessel or Kadri are the same kind of players as Ovechkin or Crosby.
But you have to keep in mind players like Ovechkin and Crosby don’t come around all too often, I know Taylor Hall could be a really really good player, but I can guarantee you he won’t be of the caliber of Ovechkin or Crosby.
The fact is you don’t necessarily need an Ovechkin or a Crosby to win cups, I’d be perfectly happy with a top line of Kessel/Kadri/Whoever… as long as they all pan out.
i know what you mean, and I know that the OV crosby comparision is a little ridiculous, but even still, I dont think they match up to most of the elite talent in the league. You can go through probably 16-17 other teams and see at least 2 or 3 guys that are much better than anything we have and I just dont see how we are going to acquire the talent to help put us into the upper echelon of teams unless we score big time on the UFA or trade market.
I think that what we have will get us to the playoffs eventually. but the stanley cup is still so disgustingly far off

I don’t think you can possibly make that judgement yet. Neither of us really knows how Kadri will perform in the NHL, he definitely has the potential to be an elite forward in the NHL. Kessel almost scored 40 goals last year for the Bruins and theoretically could score more than that in the future.
Those are two possible “elite” level players right there, do I know they will become elite players? No.
Do you know that they won’t? Nope.

Favourites to get rid of (in order): Blake, Toskala, Mayers, Exelby, Van Ryn. In their places I created Schenn, Kadri, Hanson, Bozak, and Stalberg, and gave them all ridiculous stats. Also used the roster option to import Gustavsson, although his stats are quite weak. Top 3 for my scoring are Kadri, Kessel, Hagman, which also happens to be my top forward line.
