1 Thank God, or Allah, or the FSM, or whatever. That streak was not a fun way to start the season.
2 Totally called it.
3 Now, so long as the other team can be convinced to take a dozen penalties in a brutally officiated game, we should be in the running for a win. That “slashing” penalty buddy got for stick checking Stempy – to put. The Ducks down two men to boot – was awful. The NHL is lucky Ducks fans don’t go to the games in October or there might’ve been a riot instead of six thousand amused Leafs fans.

That slashing call was a horrible, but the Leafs really got under the Ducks skin last night which lead to most of the roughing calls.

i knew

all it would take would be for a team to play bad enough to lose to us to get it done.

The team was good and had some swagger, but i think it’s pretty clear Anaheim really beat itself.

Despite my owning Hiller in a pool, I will gladly see him get lit up for the greater good.

Anaheim beat themselves because they took a ton of penalties right?

Anaheim took a bunch of penalties because they were pissed off at the Leafs buzzing around, especially after playing keep away with the puck when they killed down that penalty. They may have beat themselves but it was the Leafs that put them in that position.

Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...

easy tiger

i agree. the Leafs played well. I’m just saying I dont think Wilson can pencil in “CAPITALIZE ON 3 5-ON-3s” into his Keys to Victory list every week.

They’ve played similarly well in previous games (well, maybe not Hagman, buddy was just deadly) but for once, they buried their nice chances, got some luck and most importantly, got a goalie who bailed them out a few times.

As we all predicted, it made the difference

by pevans on Oct 27, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t mean to come across as defensive there. Just meant that I think it is a cope out to say the Ducks lost it for themselves. Had the Leafs not put the pressure on the Ducks wouldn’t have been as frustrated and wouldn’t of taken the insane amount of penalties that they did.

And no kidding about the saves. The team looked completely different with Monster in nets.

Actually, he was pretty beauty in the Vancouver game. Scored almost a carbon copy of his 1st goal vs. the Ducks in that game.

Victory in Early Morning smells like Vault! Wooooo! Hagman rules!

The game, while imperfect and with still areas of improvement, proved that the Leafs don’t need to be prefect to win if they just outwork a team! Great hustle last night!

Had to have seen that coming though right?

I mean most of the commentators probably didn’t even stay up to watch the game they just see the box score and the amount of penalties that the Ducks took and just assume the refs had it out for them in the game.

Full value for the win

…but there are still signs that should cause concern and this team can’t expend all its energy patting itself on the back. Play was very sloppy in the latter half of the 3rd (I know, I know, they thought they were home and cooled). Monster was out of position, looked a bit tired or frazzled or something and got lucky on more than a couple Anaheim forays.

The bottom line is that in a game where the opposition was shorthanded something like a nine or ten times, three times by two men – and in which we were shorthanded only twice – this wasn’t a curbstomping by any means.

Credit to our guys for keeping their cool sufficiently to avoid being penalized, for sure. And credit to them for drawing on the energy that the Monster provided them with a couple of great saves, keeping their feet moving and – FINALLY – capitalizing on their chances.

The referees didn’t hand the Leafs that victory, but they were atrocious. Wisniewski’s slashing penalty was a joke.

Now let’s see if their good work habits carry over into Dallas.

Yeah, I agree that Wiz’s slash was a bad call, but the call was made on the intent. Have a look at the replay, and he’s clearly swinging a two-hander from behind his ears. Not that he didn’t hit the puck, I’m just saying it looked worse than it was and I think that’s what drew the call. If it was one-handed, or MUCH less of a wind-up, it doesn’t get called.

pure conjecture

but could it be that, as has been said here before, the “faith” Wilson and Burke were showing in Toskala was actually rope to hang himself with?

could they have continued to throw him out there in an attempt to undermine him on the team, and gather support within the room for their rookie goalie?

but I think Gustavsson could be key to our team going forward, and not just for his skills in net. i'm going to have to save this somewhere for quick access in the future.

my previous argument for Hagman for Captain stands:

I’d rather let him develop and learn from established veterans. then, when the kids like Kadri, DiDom and Stefanovich come up and the teams core gets younger, those reigns are handed over to him.

There’s nothing Schenn could say to guys like Kabby, Komi, Beauchemin and Hagman that they can’t say themselves, or haven’t heard already by guys 1000x more experienced.

I know everyone is ready to make this Luke’s team, but the truth is, he’s still learning. He’s no Crosby or Toews. All this OLAS/divine inspiration stuff is fun, but the truth is, I don’t see him as a viable captain for the type of guys we’ve got now. Kids who need to learn from someone who’s been doing it awhile.

I don’t think there will be a C this season anyways. I’d be surprised if there’s one next season as well. More than likely, it will be held until the guys upstairs are waiting for Schenn to be ready for the responsibility. There’s more to being the captain of the Leafs than speaking in the dressing room. A lot of off ice expectations that a kid Schenn’s age really shouldn’t be worrying about. I’d rather he focus on improving his game and learning as much as he can from the guys we’ve got.

In an interview with Brady Leavold of the Swift Current Broncos, Leavold has the following to say about Ian White, formerly a star player with the Broncos and now a regular on the Toronto Maple Leafs defense corps.

“In training camp we were supposed to show up for fitness testing in the weight room at the rink, and we were all there in our gym stuff. (White) shows up in jeans and a cowboy hat. He didn’t even take it off when he had to do the bench (press). He did one rep and put the bar back on the rack and said, ’That’s all I feel like today.’ …On the bus, I was afraid to even look around my first season. I sat near the front – all the veterans were in the back – and one time when I turned around, White saw me and said, ‘What the f—- are you lookin’ at? After that I didn’t look back the rest of the season.”

Joyce also reports that prior to going to Leaf training camp, White asked Broncos GM Dean Chynoweth if he could skate with the Broncos, “then proceeded to carouse around town.” Chynoweth’s farewell to White was marked by the GM throwing White’s equipment out the back door of the arena when White didn’t show up for a practice.

OK, he’s not a “rookie” in the NHL sense, but he’s not a seasnoed vet by any stretch of the imagination.

Steve pointed this out a few days back, how quickly we as fans love and leave our players. We pump them up (OLAS, was his example) and then the first sign of adversity, he’s a has been.

i just think that Mitchell has shown plenty of jump in his first season, and had a few nights of impressive offensive acumen to warrant him getting longer looks in offensive minded situations. It’s his second season, and it could just be a case of the sophomore slump.

I’d rather give him the time to develop than just figure that 7 games in, he’s a career AHLer.

You know who I’d really like to see get a look on a line with Kessel?

Nikolai Kulemin & Mikhail Grabovski

Kuli’s willingness to play a more physical game has really impressed me. Dude has offensive skills, and if RW played him with some more offensively inclined linemates, he’ll pot 20 easily.

Grabovski is apparently indestructable, batshit crazy, and a pretty good passer.

Kuli and Grabbo would forecheck like demons and set up Kessel in the slot, or set up Kessel’s wrister on the rush. This could be a line that gives other teams fits, especially since both these two were very streaky scorers last season, and can get hot on a moment’s notice (especially with somebody like Kessel occupying the D’s attention)

Lol, it was good times, though at the time we were both so offended and pissed of at it. We felt better after getting to our other friend’s and playing beer pong baseball.

I find I am increasingly easily offended by Leafs jokes. I’ve just had too much of it already.

I just hate it the most when they have no knowledge of anything other than what they’ve read in their anti-leaf papers, or, worse, heard from their loser friends.

If they just stick to basketball like they’re supposed to, everything will be fine.

If not, well… /sounds of knives sharpening

they drive me NUTS. Eric Smith is a fucking douche, but I actually kind of like Jack, he tries to stick to hoops but gets dragged into hockey even though you can tell he doesnt know too much…

Was “We Are The Champions” and pretending to cover the Stanley Cup Parade to start your show really necessary?

It’s bad enough we get this bs from every other fanbase without our own media perpetuating it; especially from two basketball guys.

i know, eric smith loves trying to make leaf fans feel bad. Why else would they spend an entire hour talking to the ‘writers’ of leaf-abomination and breaking down all the ‘great’ points in the book and encouraging people to buy it…… fuduvhdfiovjsdplvfk..

The Avalanche confirmed Tuesday that the national swine flu scare has hit the team’s bench. Goalie Peter Budaj, out since Friday with flu-like symptoms, is suffering from the H1N1 virus, the team said.
