Orr to Face Possible Suspension for "Shoving" NHL Official
I know I cheer for the blue and white, but isn't this a little excessive? A "shove?" Really....?
Looks like Colin Campbell's random wheel of justice is out for another spin.
No link yet, but it was just reported on Hockey Central (Vs.) that Orr will not be suspended.

eh, Grabbo kicking the helmet seemed sketchy to me too, but i understand that they can’t tolerate anything that would seem like a slight against an official, so….
whatever.

This feels like the Cujo/McGeough incident… it will probably largely depend on the official’s report. He looked like he was off-balance, but if they decide Orr was too rough and he gets three games I wouldn’t really have a problem with it.

yeah
my understanding was everything relies on how the official feels about what happened… we’ll see. It’s hard to argue.

only thing the ref hurt was his pride
he lost his balance, and in the replay, Orr doesn’t shove his arm into the ref, it’s held out, and the ref hits it, then skates back and appears to trip over a helmet.
all that said, i’d not be surprised in the least if a suspension was forthcoming.

the helmet played a part in it. If it wasn’t there the linesman wouldn’t of tripped over it. Suspend Orr’s helmet.
even if the linesman didnt fall, there would still be the issue of intentional contact

how is
Orr"s holding off the linesman regardless of him tripping over himself, any worse than when guys are still fighting or fighting to get to one another and a ref inserts himself between them?

because he initiated the contact, it wast the linesman getting in the middle of the fight

contact is contact
I think its a worse offense if a ref is between two guys and someone is throwing punches over the ref trying to hit the other guy. Not only is it dumb but its clearly reckless and dangerous.

I agree. You see that quite a bit.
It’s ironic ‘cause Orr was trying to keep the linesman out of harm’s way, rather then just throw punches over top of him with complete disregard for presence.
Seriously, if the linesman had better balance or approached it with his partner in a better manner, it doesn’t hapen. When Jansen and Belak fought, Jansen waved off the linesman and they didn’t skate their chests into the palm of his hand and then fall backwards.

Yeah, the more I think about it this really needs to be a three game suspension.

I kinda expected this to happen, unfortunately.
It’s hard to have a gray area when it comes to player/ref contact like that. Although considering every other rule in the NHL is a gray area…

Who was the official?
This SO invokes the “Club Two Minutes” mentality of Stephen Walkom…
To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.
I don’t like this. Orr and Parros were still going strong in their fight; they weren’t tangled up or hugging it out, and that linesman started coming in to break them up. Orr basically told him to stay out of it, and unfortunately when a 6’4" enforcer pushes a smaller linesman, he went down.
Imagine if Orr hadn’t pushed him away and Parros sent a punch at Orr that caught the linesman square on the jar. That would have been terrible.

WHEEL. OF. DISCIPLINE.
Anyone else feel Colie Campbell just picks a number out of a hat when determining supplementary discipline for any in-game incidents?
That said, there isn’t nor should there be any wiggle room when it comes to abuse of officials. I didn’t get a good look at the incident, but if it is deemed worthy of an automatic suspension, oh well.

he didn’t trip on the helmet either. you can see the helmet about a foot away from him as he’s being pushed.
yea, but a push implies the official was closer and was moved to farther by the arm
to me it looks like orr extended his arm to block the ref from coming in

My understanding is that when it comes to abuse of officials, the options for a suspension length are zero (no foul), three (minor/incidental) or ten games (intent to injure). I’m not sure Campbell has much discretion here.

Anyone see the Vikings/Steelers game on sunday? An official got absolutely leveled on a punt return. Accidental probably, but I still find it strange there wasn’t some talk of penalty for the guy who ran into him.

i don’t think it was intentional but I really have no clue when it comes to suspensions.

I think the league has a no tolerance deal with contacting an official during a game, but I think it’s all up to the report the crew gave post game. I think the rule is 3 games, which would be disappointing for a minor shove

My first thought was to laugh, my second though was “oh shit, he is in trouble”.
I actually Like Orr, however, shoving or even touching a ref in a negative way is up there with pushing or running a goalie; you just don’t do it. If you do there is going to be consequences. I guess he REALLY wanted to fight parros.
gotta show the big boss (Burke) that you’re at least as good as the last guy he employed in your position…

It makes a statement
There was a lot of chirping going on last night. Fights like that one pretty much says, " Hey ! I dont give a fuck who’s face I’m gonna have to smash up to shut you bitches up so I’ll beat up your toughest and work my way down, ok??"
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
But that fight came early in the game, way before the chirping started.
I love fighting in hockey but only when its for a purpose (i.e. dirty hit, revenge, etc.).

The fight was clearly not over yet, they weren’t hugging and punches were being thrown. I think it’s the linesman’s own damn fault that he tried to move into a fight that was still alive. That being said, Orr probably shouldn’t have stuck his arm out. I don’t think he intended to knock the ref over and the helmet clearly was a part of it. If I was Campbell I wouldn’t give out a suspension.

Can’t read someone’s thoughts, but his body language suggested to me that he meant to hold his arm out as a “don’t stop it yet” gesture…
Unfortunately he was distracted by the Parrostache and misjudged his distance to the Linesman.

He’s a good player and a great agitator, but yeah the guy is a total douchebag. I remember a clip from the Detroit-Anaheim series last spring where Perry was telling Datsyuk to warn Samuelsson that he was going to get it.

I’m glad Colin Campbell came to his senses. Cam Janssen pushes the linesmen away on almost every fight and he never gets penalized.
by Rock Outta SoCal on Oct 28, 2009 12:37 AM EDT reply actions
As mentioned above, a lot of the ruling probably depends on the ref’s or linesman’s report of the on ice incident. If the Linesman felt it was accidental or it was his own fault then I can see the reasoning behind the call.
Personally I could see the call going either which way and I wouldn’t really get upset it.
