Jonas Gustavsson to Get First Career Start

Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman, AM640's Jonas Siegel and the Canadian Press' Chris Johnson are all reporting that Jonas Gustavsson was the first goaltender off the ice in practice today which traditionally means that he'll get the start at home tonight against Toronto's provincial rivals the Ottawa Senators.

This is a gutsy move by Wilson that shows how much confidence he has in the rookie netminder. The Battle of Ontario kicks off tonight at 7PM, let's hope #50's up to the task.

Ah, right, I get you.

Well…putting The Monster in is a no brainer…it would also be a no brainer to have Joey MacDonald be the backup. And to have only two goalies on the roster.

We’ll see if this results in a banning…

How about the idea of platoon #1 defensive pairs? I like the idea of Kaberle and Beachemin as one tandem, and Schenn and Komi as a second #1 pair. You could alternate which is #1 depending on what level of skill/speed/line you are trying to match. That being said, if Komi is in the box half the time anyway, other players will have to take his spot, anyway.

Leafs247 had a recap of Burke’s appearance on Water’s show. One of the things Burke said was that the reason he was OK with trading away picks for Kessel was having Bozak, Hanson and Gustavsson on the team.

My guess then is, Hanson is the second rounder equivalent and Gustavsson and Bozak are the first rounders (the picks traded for Kessel.)

Chances are he’ll get quite a while (more than this season) to prove he’s the future.

Definitely. I think he’ll have to show that he’s part of the Leafs’ future not necessarily that he is the number 1 for the next 10 years. He’s an RFA though so he’ll take a bit bigger financial investment to keep him around and giving him a longer look.

their plan is to play Biron and Roloson until DiPietro is healthy (duh) and then trade one to Detroit.
If that’s the case (although it sounds weird that they would target a team) Joey Mac wouldn’t have been helpful because Detroit already gave up on him.

it’s pure laziness. i could easily bring a jersey and change of clothes down here, but that would mean having to bring my suit back home tomorrow on the subway + the 10 minute walk home from the subway. (that’s right chemmy – mr suit takes public transit). i just don’t care that much.

pre-lockout, when the leafs were actually good, i probably saw 10 live games over a 5-year period and maybe saw 2 wins. it was brutal.

post-lockout, when the leafs have been nothing but mediocre, i’ve probably seen 15 or 20 games and they must have got at least a point in 75% of them. even the games they’ve lost have been entertaining.

Reassurance

I think we all just want to get back to that point in the early part of the decade when we didn’t have to worry about goaltending. We had Cujo and we knew we could count on him. Was he the best? No, of course not. But he was a top 5 goalie and that was reassuring. We really haven’t had that since he left. (FUCK YOU ED BELFOUR)

My main question to the MonSTAR is this:

Are you more Henrik Lundqvist or more Roman Turek?
