Jonas Gustavsson to Get First Career Start
Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman, AM640's Jonas Siegel and the Canadian Press' Chris Johnson are all reporting that Jonas Gustavsson was the first goaltender off the ice in practice today which traditionally means that he'll get the start at home tonight against Toronto's provincial rivals the Ottawa Senators.
This is a gutsy move by Wilson that shows how much confidence he has in the rookie netminder. The Battle of Ontario kicks off tonight at 7PM, let's hope #50's up to the task.

It’s not goalie free it’s that one goalie free.
This other goalie isn’t that first goalie.

Ah, right, I get you.
Well…putting The Monster in is a no brainer…it would also be a no brainer to have Joey MacDonald be the backup. And to have only two goalies on the roster.
We’ll see if this results in a banning…

YOU’VE SAID THE FORBIDDEN NAME!
Being a Leaf fan here requires one to be sufficiently lubricated... and truculent!
The quote I liked was this one:
“You’ll just have to come to the game and see who comes out of the tunnel first,”
Or you could go to practice and see who comes off the ice first. Same thing, I guess.

im going to predict a leaf romp tonight. I think we spank the sens 5-1
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"
I made the same prediction. Or is it wishful thinking?
Either way, I think it’s a very attractive score.
If Jonas comes in and stonewalls the Sens, he’ll be a hero, and he’ll get the starts from here on out (see Toskala vs. Raycroft, 2007).
If we lose by even a goal, the controversy lives.
If we get blown out, the city will riot.

Depends on the score – we lose 1-0 or 2-1, we’ll look at his save percentage and the goals that went in. That said, I think we’re going to destroy Ottawa – everyone’s going to come in to kick the shit out of them – and purge that god-awful game against the Caps from memory.

How about the idea of platoon #1 defensive pairs? I like the idea of Kaberle and Beachemin as one tandem, and Schenn and Komi as a second #1 pair. You could alternate which is #1 depending on what level of skill/speed/line you are trying to match. That being said, if Komi is in the box half the time anyway, other players will have to take his spot, anyway.

Leafs247 had a recap of Burke’s appearance on Water’s show. One of the things Burke said was that the reason he was OK with trading away picks for Kessel was having Bozak, Hanson and Gustavsson on the team.
My guess then is, Hanson is the second rounder equivalent and Gustavsson and Bozak are the first rounders (the picks traded for Kessel.)
Chances are he’ll get quite a while (more than this season) to prove he’s the future.

Definitely. I think he’ll have to show that he’s part of the Leafs’ future not necessarily that he is the number 1 for the next 10 years. He’s an RFA though so he’ll take a bit bigger financial investment to keep him around and giving him a longer look.

But would you go out and try to sign a big free agent goalie after this season if he still needs a year or two to develop?

you sign a stop gap…
if he needs another year, does he go to the Marlies?

apparently
their plan is to play Biron and Roloson until DiPietro is healthy (duh) and then trade one to Detroit.
If that’s the case (although it sounds weird that they would target a team) Joey Mac wouldn’t have been helpful because Detroit already gave up on him.

It’s cheap night. I’m a uni student. I can watch a repeat and catch all the bleeding SNES right after you guys.
I can’t DVR sports, I’d just check the score constantly on my phone while watching the movie.
Plus if I miss the movie: Netflix.

Yes, it sure is! A smattering of people here at work are talking about the game…but it’s mostly women talking about how cute Spezza looks. Some Habs fan’s head has gotten pretty inflated though…

Reassurance
I think we all just want to get back to that point in the early part of the decade when we didn’t have to worry about goaltending. We had Cujo and we knew we could count on him. Was he the best? No, of course not. But he was a top 5 goalie and that was reassuring. We really haven’t had that since he left. (FUCK YOU ED BELFOUR)
My main question to the MonSTAR is this:
Are you more Henrik Lundqvist or more Roman Turek?
um
Belfour had one bad year, post-lockout.
Prior to that, he was awesome.

and then we loved him for crazy things like charging out of his net to stop a breakaway, slashing players who stood in his crease, and eating hot dogs on the bench.

the first time i saw the Leafs play in LA, I was talking with some Leaf fans who happened to be staying in the same hotel as the Leafs.
during the pre-game skate, Tellqvist was in net, and Belfour was nowhere to be found. One of the guys said that they had seen Eddie in the bar slamming back drinks and told the team he’d meet them at the rink when he was ready to go.
I believed it…

the worst part of that goal was probably the fact that we didn’t have enough time to bask in the glory that was the tucker hit on kapanen. Youtube has allowed us to do that since then, but at the time it was like “YEAAA~ HOLY FUCK DID YOU SEE THAT HIT! WOW YAYAAA….. fuck”
