Tampering charges against the Leafs resolved
And the result? The Leafs were fined for the comments made by Ron Wilson, but were just verbally reprimanded for the latest charges regarding the name-dropping of players in the draft.
I wonder how long the league had to stifle their laughs when they had to seriously deal with the accusations lobbied by the Canucks. After all. for the Leafs to commit such an egregious act bordering on a massive conspiracy, a team actually needs to care about the opposition. Somehow, I doubt anyone taking the Vancouver Canucks all that seriously.

those comments were dumb… glad nothing really resulted from the latest charges. Damn Aquilini.

Yeah
shouldn’t have said the first part but the second was meant to be private.
That’s likely the distinction.

Leafs TV needs to be more careful with their editing, as well.

Why?
This wasn’t made public until months after it could have impacted anything.
Leafs Rumination: hockey and sesquipedalianism.
Impacted anything...
except of course the players who found out from friends/family that they were trade bait at the draft?
They might not have thought about it before all this arose… and since they aren’t that old, and the Canucks are their first team in the NHL, it might be a bit jarring an experience for them.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Are the rules intended to protect their feelings, or the team’s ability to deal with them as assets?
Leafs Rumination: hockey and sesquipedalianism.
The latter.
And it definitely impacts on the relationship the Canucks have with players who happen to be under contract.
As I said below, they didn’t commit tampering, but they should know better, and I can understand why Gillis would be annoyed.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Filing a grievance with the NHL
probably wasn’t intended to actually punish the Leafs, it was a means of attracting the League’s notice to the percieved behaviour. That way if anything similar happens again, the Canucks can rightfully say it’s a pattern of behaviour and not just a one off occurence.
The Leafs should tread carefully in that regard, as they don’t want to damage themselves further in regards to drafting and free agency.

yes
and given that it’s a team run station, they should know better than to let stuff like this get through. I’d say that Burke was unhappy this was let out, and if it happens again, I imagine heads will roll.

See my "It’s not against the rules, but if you do it again, we’ll punish you" post further down.
A very slimy tactic, but to their credit, it appears to have worked.
Leafs Rumination: hockey and sesquipedalianism.
I think we may be agreeing on the issue and arguing over whose rhetoric is most appropriate.
I don’t object to the notion that it could be considered an irritant for Gillis, or even a tactically unwise move for Burke. It seems to me, though, that some people are convinced that if it didn’t violate the letter of the tampering rules, it did violate the spirit, which I find absurd. At absolute worst, you might call it jackassey, and I’d probably even stop short of that.

“That while unfortunate and inappropriate, the inclusion of a brief reference to the names of a pair of current Vancouver Canucks players in a television segment that aired once on Leafs TV last week did not constitute a tampering offense under League rules, and that no League action will be taken, or League sanction imposed on the Maple Leafs’ organization as a result.
“The Maple Leafs have been advised that the League likely would impose discipline for any future inappropriate conduct on their part that may cause, or may reasonably be perceived to cause, damage to the Canucks’ franchise, or its relationship with its existing players and/or employees.

The Leafs didn't commit tampering
But discussing another team’s players that way is virtually taboo in the NHL. Burke and Wilson just need to keep their mouths shut regarding players on other teams.
Ignoring that sort of unspoken rule can burn bridges with other GM’s.

Wilson was being dumb.
I didn’t see the Leafs TV special, but is there any reason to believe that Burke was making the statement about the possible deal with the idea of it becoming public?

I've read other places
that what Burke did a couple years ago (live-blogging the trade deadline) was waaaaaaay worse than dropping a rumour he heard. I mean, he even prefaced it as such.
But Wilson slipped up, and deserved a fine. Nothing more.
I don’t remember that he mentioned any names in that diary.

The whole thing is just a list of names and prices:
We’re interested in Peter Forsberg, but when Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren calls I tell him we aren’t trading (first-round pick) Bobby Ryan. We go through a package and I reject several names, including Corey Perry.
[Holmgren and I] discuss multiple names to go with the high pick and they ask for specific players (Perry, Ilya Bryzgalov, Chris Kunitz). I like Homer and want him to succeed, but I’m thinking we would be better off looking at Todd Bertuzzi and the possibility of landing another defenseman. But (Florida GM/coach) Jacques Martin isn’t shopping Bertuzzi yet. We are looking at defensemen around the league who could end up being available —Brent Sopel, Brad Stuart and Sami Salo. But I think Vancouver is trying to re-sign Salo.
Phoenix offered me Ladislav Nagy for a first-round pick. I call Doug MacLean about the possibility of acquiring Fredrik Modin.
Tampa Bay offers goalie Gerald Coleman and a second for O’Brien. We want a first- round pick.
Sather talks to me about O’Brien, and Pleau asks if I want to revisit the Tkachuk deal and make it bigger. We decide it’s not going to work, but we are interested in Bill Guerin. Sather tells me he’s got a good offer for Aaron Ward from another team
.

Convenient Timing
It’s clear that this was a ploy by Gillis to shift attention away from his team’s early struggles this season. He waited for the perfect time to bring this up and chose the perfect venue to do so (Pratt and Taylor on Team 1040). That show has become the fox news of sports radio with all talking points somehow relating to Toronto, or whatever Gillis wants them to say. As a resident of Vancouver, it is amazing how much these guys whine about Toronto. Pratt, like Glenn Beck, believes that as long as you repeat something enough, it will magically come true. In this case, it is that Burke has a vendetta against the Canucks, and that the Leafs have a bare cupboard and an old team, etc.
It is also interesting to note that Gillis’ first complaint against the Leafs came right around the same time as him coming up dry on brining in any new talent to his club via free agency. The Vancouver media has given him a free pass on both.
Some markets, like Vancouver are homerific.
Some are bipolar, like the SNES media
Some are actually pretty good over all, with some wacko extremists – see Habs Media
Then, there is the Toronto media… ask Godd Till and Kim Jorn about that, they are experts

Yeah, I’m well aware of how negative the Toronto media can be. They are the polar opposite of Vancouver. The funny thing is that the media here are always talking about how biased the Toronto media is towards the Leafs. Have they ever read Berger, Cox, or Simmons?
clearly not
the Vancouver media are inane, I can’t stand listening to them, or reading them….
