Jonas Gustavsson on IR, Joey MacDonald Recalled
Fan590 is reporting that Jonas Gustavsson has been placed on IR with a groin pull. Joey MacDonald has been called up on emergency recall (doesn't have to clear waivers).
It's estimated that Gustavsson will be out for at least one week.
blurr update - Hot off the presses, the Canadian Press is now reporting the same:
The Toronto Maple Leafs placed Jonas Gustavsson on injured reserve Thursday morning with a groin injury and recalled fellow goaltender Joey MacDonald from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.
Gustavsson, nicknamed The Monster, is expected to miss at least one week.
PPP Update: Chemmy and I have been tossing around ideas on how to deal with this news. Here is what we have:
How to commit suicide quickly and without a lot of fanfare
- Cut femoral artery in a hot tub
- Jump off of a bridge into ottawa traffic
- The Wellwood - Try to eat as much as Kyle Wellwood
What ones can you come up with?

every one pick a deity, and then pray/sacrafice/whatever daily for Toskala to play so well, Sather and Waddel start a bidding war for him.

Actually I’m going to make a Vesa voodoo doll and repeatedly stab his groin so he can be put on long term IR once the Monster is back; so Gustavsson can start with MacDonald as the backup.
Wings fan by birth. Leafs fan by truculent osmosis.
Dear Poseidon,
I know your busy with your fish stuff but if you could see fit to help out with our goalie situation and give Toskala helping hand to actually play decent, I would really appreciate it. And at the same time if you could erase the other GM’s memory of the past couple years that would be good too.

Dear beloved Flying Spaghetti Monster-
We, your hungry but highly vexed yet devoted followers, humbly beseech thee to extend the glory of your noodly appendage to heal the cataclysm that is our goal-tending situation.
Roll down the glory that is your meatballs of justice and enable Toskala to play as if his entire wardrobe is on the line.
Cover us with the spicy, healing warmth of your tomato sauce and protect us all evil, especially that which oozes from the Snes fanbase like pus from an open, festering wound.

lets pray that an alien symbiot comes to earth and takes over Toskala’s jersey so everytime he puts it on he will have advanced powers. He might also become evil, but who cares as long as he stops the puck
Evil Toskala?
Will he zap opposing players with his new-found laser eyes?

I hope that MacDonald starts. Saturday’s game is against Pittsburgh who just got embarrassed by Phoenix. They are going to be pissed and come out with a hell of a chip on their shoulders. MacDonald will get into the game regardless of if he starts or not, so might as well already have him out there at the beginning.
Wings fan by birth. Leafs fan by truculent osmosis.

Instead of SPG, PPP should have a betting line as to what point of the game Vesa will get pulled.

This could be a good thing.
After last week, we were on the verge of a full-fledged goalie controversy. And it didn’t sound like Toskala was taking it well. Wilson was in a no-win situatiuon, because if he made the right call then Toskala might pull a suck and end up being a distraction.
Instead, we can play Vesa for the next few tough matchups, watch him get lit up, and then when Monster comes back there won’t be a controversy anymore.
And also, we’ll be 0-6.
And Gustavsson seems injury prone.
So yeah… a good thing.

I wonder how much of this is related to his surgery? I mean, they went in through the groin, did they not? Could be he just pushed a little too hard to get going.
i don’t think we can call him injury prone yet…

Nope. Those were all Ron Wilson starts (although one of them might have been pre-GM change). But he’s actually always had good luck against Pittsburgh for some reason — 6-1, 2.87, .905 over his career.
Ah, who am I kidding. JONESTOWN!!!

coach change for the Pens i think she means, they were one of the many teams that lost to the leafs last year and then fired their coach the day afer

Apparently Berger is saying that Stalberg is OK and will play on Saturday.
So I guess we have that.

Sorry, no.
Where’s the faith in Blake?
He started rough last year, too.

yeah
Blake’ll be fine, but he had to sit down last year too before he turned it around.
Also, Kuleim = Future, while Blake will be gone by the time we really make playoff noise.

from the Star
In the meantime, rookie forward Viktor Stalberg will not play Saturday against Pittsburgh. Stalberg left Tuesday’s game against Ottawa with concussion symptoms after a devastating hit from Anton Volchenkov.
After examinations by the medical staff, though, Stalberg was pronounced free of symptoms.
“We should have him back on the ice Saturday and hopefully ready to play by Monday,” Wilson said.
I think they’re probably right, and Berger is wrong.

Meanwhile, the Leafs added a third figure to their goaltending controversy — kind of, anyways.
Move over, Monster. You too, Vesa Toskala.
Woody is now on the scene.
With fans debating between Gustavsson and Toskala, the coaching staff brought in a wooden cutout of a goalie and had players attempt to pick the corners on it.
“We’re missing the net far too many times,” Wilson said.
I wonder how well we did with t hat. (Full article here.)

As an leaf fan living in rural Québec, it was I who channelled negative energy at Jesus, Price and made him suck. It is also my fiendishly devious plan (though less so now that I am exposing it to everyone) that MacDo the goalie shares time with the Monster between the pipes. I am pointing as we speak to the giant hole of suck that ends in China into which the next game Vesa will tumble and not return. If it doesn’t work, well… I’ll blame the suitable people . Patience grasshoppers.
Normally I don’t like James Duthie of TSN that much, I think he is a bit pompous and thinks he is the funniest thing on TV which is clearly not the case. However his recent post on TSN.ca is pretty spot on when it comes to panic around the NHL these days.

According to the Team 1040 and some threads, Carey Price punched a hole in the dressing room wall after last night’s game. Perhaps he was aiming for Jacques Martin and missed.
Now, this is from the Canucks sports radio, so take it with a grain of salt… but… wow.

Wilson was just quoted on the Fan590 saying Toskala will get the next three starts.
0-8-1 sound like a reasonable outcome?
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
From Zwolinski in the Star today:
“I got points in the first game (overtime loss to Montreal), and I’ve lost one game … it’s only three games into the season and I’m working on being ready for the next one,” Toskala said.
Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry tries to convince Elaine that spending another week at his parents condo will only seem like a couple of days.
Ya know, I’ve sort of been on the fence between the “Waive Toskala” crowd and the “All We Are Saying, is Give Tosk a Chance” crowd, but this meh attitude of his really fucking irks me.
Given the Leafs’ luck, they’ll tank and take 1st overall…wait Boston’ll take it. Taylor Hall will turn into the best player since Gretzky and Burke’s hair will grow even whiter.
Go Houston Rockets!
If that happens I will stop blogging; buy 10 Copies of Abomination and immediately start cheering for another team.
