Leafs 2 Flames 5 - I Hate The 80s
Leafs outplay Calgary most of the game and still lose going away. Positives - Luke Schenn, Gunner, Phil Kessel, Matt Stajan. Negatives - pretty much everything else.
Calgary got a quick three, and then, Bundy-style, asked for the five count. We almost hulked-up for the comeback, but then got squashed in the third.
So, playoffs is kinda definitely not happening, right? The only thing that ever seems to change is the way it all goes wrong. Give me some reasons to believe, after the jump.

Do we have anything at all to lose by bringing up Tlusty, Bozak, Hanson, and Bozak? Like, a major shake-up? I mean, do we have 4 forwards we can’t afford to replace for a game or two (or three or four?). I don’t want to jump on the whole “our young guys have all the potential and will save the season” bandwagon, but do we really have 4 forwards on the team who can’t possibly be replaced for a game or two?

by Marc Pilgrim on Nov 14, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
The problem with the Leafs though is that they can’t bench all four guys due to roster limits. So they have to waive them to the Marlies. That means they can’t bring them up without fear of losing them on re-entry for nothing. That’s terrible asset management and it’s something the Leafs can’t afford to waste given our lack of tradeable assets in general.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
I’d be fine with risking losing Stajan and Blake. Even on reentry if it’s Stajan (Blake can stay buried).

by puckurgently on Nov 14, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions
Personal feelings aside, the Leafs are without two high draft picks this season, so losing Stajan for nothing is counterproductive.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Who’s paying for Stajan? I’d have agreed with you at the start of the year, but he’s a pending UFA who doesn’t perform at all in any zone. His trade value is 0 at this point.

We don’t have many players I’d hate to see sent down, waived, or traded. They’re not really producing, and who knows if they’ll be back next year anyway?
aren’t there quite a few Leafs who have contracts expiring/ under renewal at the end of this season or next?

Exactly
Stajan isn’t worth a lot now, but the fact of the matter is, the Leafs just have too many forwards on this team and have to make some trades. The team is in no position whatsoever to turn down a mid-round pick just because they want to shake things up. Moore and Antropov last season fetched draft picks despite their pending UFA status.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Moore was a fleecing. Antropov is a good hockey player. Depending on being able to pull off another Mooresque swindle is not good management.

Depending on being able to pull off another Mooresque swindle is not good management.
Why not? The Leafs trading players of minimal worth for something more is a wrong strategy for management? If they don’t get much, it’s still better than exposing them on re-entry waivers and losing them for nothing. Losing their pending expiring salaries is negligible at this point.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
I’m not saying getting something would be bad management. I’d do cartwheels over it. I’m saying expecting that a GM somewhere will give up a pick for Matt Stajan is too much of a gamble for me to be comfortable with.

Stajan himself isn’t that old. But I agree that Hanson and Stalberg at the very least should be playing for the Leafs. It’s just there are too many forwards on this team that are in “betweeners” where they’re not talented enough to keep, but aren’t totally worthless where the Leafs can ship them off to the Marlies and know they won’t be claimed.

Let’s see … Leaf management refuse to admit Toskala isn’t the number one goalie so they can fool someone into trading for him. They want us to believe they have chips to play at the trade deadline even though they have traded Stralman, Kubina for players that can’t even crack the current roster. They lost Kronwall for nothing. They also claim the farm is full of Blue Chippers even though the Marlies are as bad as they are. They have no draft picks for the next two years. Hmmm sorry dude, I got nothing for you.

Another Positive
Most of you don’t live in Calgary. I do; I will not hear the end of this, at least not until January 2, because to a lot of Flames fans, winning this game is better than winning the Stanley Cup. I sorta, kinda like the Flames—it’s nice having easy access to a good hockey team while I’m here—but a lot of their fans are as bad as Vancouver fans but with that pesky “more recent than 1967!” Cup win. (I definitely got “at least I was alive to see my team win” yesterday. Yesterday.)
Nice to see Flames still hoarding over their one Stanley Cup win over the 13 for the Leafs. Guess they know how it feels like being out of the playoffs like the Leafs. After all, they loved not going to the playoffs during the late 1990s.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Why are the Leafs so bad? Blame the Marlies.
Hear me out. Since the Leafs moved their AHL farm team from St. John’’s to Toronto, they have not made the playofffs. In fact, their record with their farm team in Ontario is brutal. Since 1982, their record with the farm team in St. Catherines, Newmarket, and Toronto is .429, missing the playoffs in 8 of 13 seasons. (Keep in mind they made the playoffs twice in that span with fewer than 60 points)
With the farm team on the Rock, they had a record of .540, and only missed the playoffs in 3 of 13 seasons.
My theory is that players are too comfortable when the farm team is close by. Players don’t have to worry about being away from their homes and families if they are sent down. Obviously this is not the only factor, nor is it even a huge factor, but I think there is something to it.
Thoughts?
The Leafs also haven't made the playoffs since I moved to BC.

Moustache Fever, not to be confused with swine flu.
I’ll have to agree with the two posters just above me that this theory about the Marlies being too close to the big club is grasping at straws. By the same token, wouldn’t the Leafs being so close inspire the players on the Marlies to know how close they are to the show? Being banished to the minors itself is a big blow to anyone’s egos, no matter where the team is located because they still have to travel on the road. Their families don’t follow them around, so that impact seems negligible.
The Marlies are bad because they’ve been managed pretty badly ever since they relocated to Toronto. Instead of establishing themselves to the community like St. John’s, MLSE mistakenly (and arrogantly I might add) believed that any kind of hockey would be successful in the city. They didn’t advertise or market the team properly, nor are their tickets that great of a value. Only now did the management feel the Marlies should mirror the Leafs as a developmental team, rather than a branch of their corporate and commercial entity.

Optimism
I think at this point, for me, I’ve accepted the fact that this team just ain’t that good. At all.
There are bright spots (Kessel, Gustavsson, Schenn, Kadri, Bozak, Hanson etc.) but that’s just it. Spots. The solution is to wholesale change the team like Cliffy did when he made the trade for Gilmour. The problem is, in a cap system, that will never happen.
Like it or not, this is going to be a long year…
I have nothing interesting to say.
by blurr1974 on Nov 14, 2009 11:29 PM EST reply actions
ooops
enter to soon.
The team is definitely devoid of leadership. Stitching the “C” on anybody at this point won’t solve anything. To those of you who think otherwise, ask yourself what this magic letter on the jersey would change in the dressing room, or on the ice, for this squad. If a guy can’t lead until he’s appointed, then he can’t lead, period.
Burke is going to have to sit down with Nonis, Wilson et. all and start some serious conversations. Who does Wilson want to keep, who does Burke want to keep, Nonis, etc. Target those guys, and begin structuring the team to allow these players to have the ice time to succeed. Trade the disposable for whatever you can get. The guys that this team has that people want, are just the same guys we probably shouldn’t be trading. We can worry about losing players for nothing, but quite frankly, if there was a market for them, then someone would offer something.
I have nothing interesting to say.

But Burke has to work on getting some decent offense. Kessel is heads and shoulders above the rest.
I’m optimistic for two reasons:
1) The young guys (Kadri, Bozak, Hanson, Stalberg) should do a good job of filling out the top six.
2) All the upcoming UFAs the Leafs have should give enough space to make some good signings and get more skill on this time.
Let Stajan walk, and I say keep one of Poni or Stempninjiak.

kiprusoff (sp) played excellent, but there were a few choice ones where we just stuffed it right at him. we need an iginla ( i know i know) our forwards are pedestrian save kessel. great second period, that one power play was outstanding. we are a train wreck in our own end, i dont expect many wins until theres some accountability back there.
Wow
This was just like a regular post-game recap, only great.
Excellent work GT
You know where I'm from.
