Putting things into perspective...

Editor's Note: Time is slipping away from the Leafs in terms of starting to play some good hockey that results in actual wins rather than moral victories but just how far are they from certain benchmarks? Now we know. Playoffs don't seem THAT far away...

Might make this a weekly thing...just to see how far the Leafs are from various positions in the standings.

Distance from the President's Trophy:  22 pts. (21 behind San Jose, Leafs would lose the tiebreak...Leafs have four games in hand).  (Yeah, we can probably forget about this one.)

Distance from the conference lead:  18 pts. (17 behind New Jersey, Leafs would lose the tiebreak).  (This one is probably out of reach too.)

Distance from the division lead:  15 pts. (14 behind Buffalo, Leafs would lose the tiebreak...and Buffalo also has a game in hand).  (Leafs probably won't get this either.  As an aside, if the PLAYOFFS!!!1 started now, every other team in the Northeast would not make it.)

Distance from the PLAYOFFS!!!1:  10 pts. (10 behind the Islanders...Leafs have two games in hand).  (If the Leafs would just play better and put some wins together, maybe this wouldn't seem so far...)

Distance from getting out of the Taylor Hall sweepstakes:  6 pts. (5 behind St. Louis, Leafs would lose the tiebreak).  (Surely they can get out of here?!?)

Distance from last place:  Leafs have a 1 point lead over Carolina and would win a tiebreak (and the Leafs also have a game in hand).  (Let's hope they get as far as they can ahead of here...!)

So...well they're not screwed yet...but the Leafs had better start playing like it's November soon.

Oh wait, it IS November!  Uh oh...

We really have to turn it up this month. My god Leafs, it’s November, the single most important month of the season – according to the holy words of Howard Berger; amen.

We had a great start to November. Then Ian White shaved.

Not even out of November, and already it looks like the most we can probably hope for is not to end bottom 5 and give Boston a kick-ass pick. Ah well. Next year.

Yeah

Carolina’s win cut the gap from 3 to 1.

Curious

how far into the future can a team trade draft picks? Is it in perpetuity?

just thinking that if Kessel could be had for future picks, surely there’s a center that can be had for a further down the line pick.

(this is the part where people freak out and call me insane….wait for it…wait…)

I have nothing interesting to say.

not sure but the idea of trading 2012’s pick is not appealing for a few reasons.. to me not drafting a first three years in a row would be really bad for the system, burke won’t be able to recruit to free agent type prospects when he can’t dangle the “lack of talented competition for roster spots” card and any value we were able to get for a pick that far in the future probably wouldn’t bring us anything worth having.. don’t forget we traded all of those picks for the rights to sign kessel.. if boston had the room or a year left on his contract this would have taken alot more/ wouldn’t have happened

that makes no sense

if he can trade for a talented top 6 player, who cares if the space isn’t available for an FA signing?

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Nov 16, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i don’t mean space, i mean he justified trading those picks via the signing of bozak and hanson type prospects.. those guys don’t sign with us if our top six is full of young talent.. therefore we will need the draft picks to keep talent coming in

draft picks

do not guarantee talent.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Nov 16, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

if they did

people wouldn’t be questioning picks like Devane in the third in another post here.

I understand the implications of such a move. What I’m curious about is how much of the future a GM (any GM on any team really, just used Burke because he’s the Leafs’ GM) can trade away.

I have nothing interesting to say.

Problem

TVP: The Time Value of Picks – basically, distant future picks aren’t worth as much to people as imminent future picks. If someone offered to take Kabs off our hands for their next 3 first round pick, we might take that. If it was for their first round picks in 2042-2045, we probably wouldn’t.

So at some point, as you move out into the future, people won’t give you very much at all for those picks.

So

nobody knows how far into the future picks can be offered, is what i’ve gleaned from this.

I have nothing interesting to say.

I can’t see there being a limit on it

There's no official limit that I know of

But in real terms nobody would bother trading for one too far in advance. I mean, it’s not gearing for a cup run, it’s not scratching to make the playoffs, and it’s not rebuilding. Even the worst teams figure they’ll be competitive in 5 more years, so draft picks then won’t help much. Heck, most GM’s figure they won’t even BE there in 10 years to get the benefit of the payoff.

So in other words, Detroit will do this and it’ll be genius, but the first time someone else does it’s going to be a circumvention of the CBA

In the NFL the rule of thumb is a second round pick this year is worth a first round pick next year and so on.

Imagine trading the 2100-2120 first rounders for Ovechkin? Downside, that’s a lot of firsts. Upside – we’ll be dead.

What about like in March? Don’t they usually tear it up in March? (or at least, usually during the past few years?)

Maybe this has been the plan all along.. Fall behind ridiculously early so they can turn into world-beaters that much quicker.

I remember that happening fir the past few years—they’re all but eliminated from anything but the links and then in march they go on like a 9 game winning streak

Pretty bleak

oh well … I guess we can follow Kessel’s stats and pray he finds some chemistry with someone. Might make the season bearable.
