Good Father Edition
Senor Blurr is out being a good dad at Disneyland so you get an original FTBer taking hold of the reins. Actually, as I write this, and use the powers of scheduled posting, he's trying not to swear in front of Bubba as the LA traffic lives up to its reputation. Meanwhile, my Google Reader is currently empty so if you don't see your link it's because you didn't conform to my schedule. Toss 'em in the links and I'll add them when I wake up/get to work. For now, let's toss around ideas on how we can get Bloge Salming and Down Goes Brown to coordinate so that they don't post on the same day and then take a week to write another post.
- I am Mr. Mood Swing, "Just One Cup" Guy, The Fixer, and The Realist in completely unequal, and constantly shifting parts. Damn schizophrenia.
- The NHL deserves a better class of owner.
- Think Nikita Filatov is an option to pursue? Well, let's just say the Leafs don't have the assets.
- THM has a thought on how to figure out who should fight whom. My only quibble is that I want to know who said Neil shouldn't have fought Schenn? OLAS grabbed him. He had to go. It's just a shock to see it happen is all.
- Steves gives hope with one paragraph and takes away with the other.
- He's only 20 years old.
- TSM wonders if Ron Wilson has a duty to answer rote questions.
- Garrett Bauman writes a pretty good post except for the goaltending part.
- Sorry UWO. The evidence is in: no touchdown for Trevail.
- And something to make you smile: the Detroit Red Wings getting screwed over.
- Michael Aldred previews Toilet Bowl II: Revenge of the Basement Dwellers and wonders if juggling the 4th line will change things.
- It's like paint by numbers but with feces.
- More proof that Sports Illustrated has no idea when it comes to hockey. Wendel Clark as Alex Burrows? Doug Gilmour as Claude Lemieux? Why not Wayne Gretzky as Mike Comrie?

that doesn’t make sense to me. how can Queen’s be the sport of Kings? Queen’s is a school, not a sport. i get the sentiment and spirit behind the cheer, but it doesn’t seem very logical does it?

Yeah, who exactly is complaining about the Neil/Schenn fight? Neil even let up at the end. Not sure what else he was supposed to do there.
Now, you could argue that he should have answered the bell with Orr in the second. You know, instead of what he actually did, which was shit his pants on national TV and hide under the zamboni. But that’s a separate discussion.

I complained about Neil cross checking Schenn after the hit and then trying to throw Stempniak into the open bench door.
I haven’t seen anyone complain about the fight.

There was a front page story in the Ottawa Citizen today about the Raptors using a picture of Alfredsson to get fans to boo.
Note that I don’t meant “front page of the sports section”. I mean front page. Of the news section.
But remember, this town definitely does not have an inferiority complex about Toronto.

Yes, kids should be focused instead on humorous skits about Bob Gainey’s Habs being thrown over the side of a boat. You know, comedy.

long rambling thoughts
thanks to a LONG (a 3.5 hour drive became 6 last night…) time spent on the road. I haven’t bothered to read through all of yesterday’s FTB, so I apologize if these have already been said.
anyhoo, TSM’s quote below is how i feel about not just the MSM, but much of the Barilkosphere currently:
Where stay at home Berger fails, is offering solutions. A true insider does that. It’s very easy to sit back and identify the problem. What separates the pretenders from the real deal are those who can suggest fixes. That’s not to suggest any of them will be done, but at least it shows that the author has the ability to make suggestions and not just point out the obvious.
That’s not to say EVERYONE is pointing out the obvious, without giving possible solutions, but at some point it’s a broken record.
Yes Blake sucks. Yes Schenn is not playing up to expectations. Yes Mayers and Primeau are redundant. I get that. Everyone gets that. What can be done (beyond the “Waive them/trade them!” simplistic arguments) is the question. Waive them, and replace them with whom? Trade them for whom? To where? And who would want them?
I get the feeling Burke isn’t making any moves because he’s not in a position of strength. He’ll be lucky to get pennies on the dollar for any Leaf not named Schenn, Gustavsson or Kessel. Is that smart? I’m certainly not suggesting he can hold out hope forever, or assume someone will overpay for a current roster player, but the season is still young. One look out at Pittsburgh, and one can see that teams with higher expectations can quickly be put in a position of desperation.
For how many years have we fans complained about “selling low?” Now that the Leafs are stinking up the joint, it’s the first thing that’s brought up. We probably aren’t making the playoffs this season, although miracles do happen and I’m holding out for one.
Secondly, I love Phil Kessel. I love Luke Schenn. I love Jonas Gustavsson, Kadri, Tlusty, Stempniak, Kaberle, White etc etc etc. But if any one of those guys can be traded to make the Leafs a better team, I’m 100% behind it. If, in some course over the season, I suggest trading one of your favorite players, I apologize. It is nothing personal.
Lastly, if the Leafs are a lottery team, then they are a lottery team. Not much can be done about that. Kessel was traded for those picks, and regardless of how you think about the deal, it’s done. We can dissect it twenty ways from Sunday, but at the end of it all, Kessel is a Leaf, and those picks are Bruins. there isn’t a single solution that can be offered that will change that. You all know, I’m a fan of the move though, so take that for what you will…
Missed you all in SOCAL, and sorry I missed the sens game. I’d prescribe a few days in Disneyland for all of us at some point this season…
I have nothing interesting to say.

I spent the week before Halloween in Disney World. The warm Orlando sun helped with the ugly taste of losing that was in my mouth. When I got back, the Leafs had won their first game and were a couple of games into the 7 game points streak.
In summary – Disney parks save Leafs’ fans souls.

amen. if the ‘this is why the kessel trade was stupid’ talk continues, i’m going to have to take a little timeout from this place.
100% agreed about offering solutions. we’re in a mess, let’s talk about how we get out of it, not about how this team will be shit for all eternity.
and i’m with you on trades – even kabby. i just will be shocked if there’s any scenario ever in which trading kaberle makes our team better. (ok, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but i’m biased).

that’s actually not what i’m saying at all. my point is that no matter what happens in Toronto – good or bad or neutral or unknown – someone is going to complain about it. kessel could have 0 pts now or 20 pts and the leafs could have won 4 straight instead of lost 4 straight, and it wouldn’t matter – there would still be people complaining about this deal.
not to mention that I think it’s a tad premature to call a trade a mistake after the player in question has played 7 games, and we are 63 games away from knowing what draft pick we traded away (145 games away from knowing what the other pick is). most people will agree that trades are usually best evaluated after several years have passed.

Agreed on the first part. The fan base is so large, there’s always going to be a cotingent that’s unhappy.
As for the second part, I am calling the Kessel trad a mistake (and I love the way the guy has played. Think he’s the best Leaf ina long time). I’ll also be happy to eat my words and admit I’m wrong if it all works out for the best several years from now.

well, given the huge number of events yet to happen that we can’t possibly know about, i’m not ready to call it a mistake yet. but as long as you’re happy to eat your words, that’s all i can ask for. personally, i’m sick of eating my words, so i’ll be happy for you to take a turn:
“hey, that raycroft kid was a calder winner, he could work out.”
“hey, toskala’s been pretty solid in san jose, he could work out.”
“hey, jason blake, jamal mayers and lee stempniak were all fan favourites on their old teams, they could work out.”
damn this team always making me the fool. i have faith that kessel won’t do that to me though.
