Leafs give up two quick ones (one bad one by Goose), Poni makes it 4-2, Canes tie it with help from the refs, White scores with 40 seconds left, lots of celebration, Canes tie it with 2 seconds left, Leafs score in OT but intent to blow fucks us, then shootout shows that Gustavsson is also useless in them.
And now, you’re going to shake your head at the reactions :)

I couldn’t believe they didn’t review it, but the guys in the War Room were probably like, “It looks like a goal, but the ref will just say something about that intent to whistle bullshit and it’ll all be for moot, so let’s not waste our time looking at it.”

Not as bad considered Brad May shot the puck right in, versus a scrum with Hagman in the goal. But still a very bad call. The worst call tonight was Stephan Yelle Ian White’s phantom high stick.

I just mean that I’d like to see him return to the level of play that earned him 20 minutes per game. If a sit-down in the press box will put him back up there, he’ll wind up playing more than if he continues to play but sucks.
If handled right sitting Schenn in the press box for a game or two is not a bad idea. As long as RW doesn’t rip him a new one but is as supportive as possible in explaining why this will be good for him. Then teach him like crazy in practice.
Gotta try something right? Or else what the hell are we paying these coaches for?

We’re asking for complex skilled performance from Schenn, the last thing we need is him feeling angry and ashamed and confused for being punished. He’ll be holding his stick when he gets back like a gorilla is trying to tear it out his grip.
He needs to get back to playing the game with focus and intensity. Make sure he doesn’t see it as a punishment, but time to step back, breath, reflect, and get focussed on what is important.

Totally different situations—Schenn has a year of experience, is older, and plays a completely different style—but after some initial disappointment, Karlsson’s playing pretty strongly with Binghamton.

What did Burke do to rush a rebuild though? Aside from the draft picks being traded for Kessel (which won’t actually help the team now), nothing has really changed from last season. That’s more the problem than him making moves to “shore” up this team.

You guys now see little hope… But at least if there was a lottery pick at the end of the tunnel, it would be bittersweet.

seriously, can you believe burke?? he gets hired as GM and he comes in and signs some guys and makes some trades, instead of just giving up for a few years and hoping to get some high draft picks. it’s like he’s never been a real GM before or something.

Can I Ask A Serious Question?
What the fuck is our coaching staff getting paid for?
They clearly can’t get through to these guys that there are no nights off. I’m absolutely embarassed that a team that has scored first 3 out of 20 games, and has 3 wins in 20 games, decides that after putting up 3 goals in the first it has earned the right to coast. That lack of effort is totally on the players, but 102 games and Wilson already can’t get these guys to play 60 minutes hard? Holy shit.
Second, I don’t know how it’s possible for a team to be this awful on the PK, but can we get them to stop with this 2 hands on the stick BS? Good PK’s take away the shooting lanes through positioning and shot-blocking, and take away the passing lanes with active sticks. But the Leafs players sticks never even move, and it’s how the game got tied up at 4. Gleason scored because both the weakside forward and the weakside D weren’t square, weren’t moving their sticks, and weren’t aware of any Hurricane except the one with the puck. Fucking pathetic.
Finally, does any Leaf forward know how to block a shot? And if not, does any Leaf coach know how to teach them? Because these guy’s don’t block a shot so much as they create another body for the goalie to try and find the puck through. It’s embarassing that leads get coughed up to dreadful teams because two forwards play kitten soft on the puck on the boards, and the third forward doesn’t make anything but a half-hearted effort to block the shot, which consists of skating towards the vicinity of the shooting lane and tucking their stick in to avoid deflecting the puck. And this isn’t an isolated incident; I seriously can’t remember the last time I saw a Leaf forward go down in an effort to block a shot.
I’m not suggesting he be fired, but Wilson’s reputation as a good coach in this league has taken an absolute beating this season as far as I’m concerned.
Resident Capologist
I couldn't agree more.
Even if he is a good coach, it doesn’t matter at this point. He’s not coaching this team well. Period.
And yeah blah blah blah look what he has to work with. But he’s still failing the team. Case in point. We go up 3 – 0 on the road. 25 coaches in this league start playing a trap-style, or a one-man forecheck. Didn’t see that from RW tonight.

Man
Forget all this “Two 1st Rounders for Kessel will kill us” talk, it’s been done to death. Know what’s gonna REALLY sting in three years time? Knowing that on draft night 2009, Brian Burke could’ve traded Schenn for the #2 pick and decided to pass on Hedman.
Schenn has to be the biggest disappointment on a team rife with ‘em (at least as far as I’m concerned)
by Richard S. Argent on Nov 19, 2009 11:21 PM EST reply actions
Don't give up on him
It’s his sophomore season and this is an incredibly common phenomenon. Phil Kessel was put through the meat grinder in his second season for not having a marked improvement. Steve Mason is struggling etc., etc. He will be a prominent defense man in this league and he is simply learning the ropes of the NHL while trying to be more dynamic than last year. In a few short years people will never even question his “sophomore slump”.
SCHENN WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN HEDMAN
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SCHENN PLUS KADRI PLUS KABERLE AT LEAST!

Horrid rule in regards to “Intent to Blow” and horrid penalty call on Ian White’s phantom high stick late in the 3rd period. But good teams don’t blow a 3-0 lead. The Leafs had the game in hand, but allowed the game to be decided by complete officiating gaffes. This whole team lacks confidence and it shows by their inability to hold the fort and play simple hockey. The Leafs do have some of the worst luck, but that doesn’t excuse this team from playing passive and hesitant. Perhaps, if the bounces go the way for the Leafs sometimes, confidence wouldn’t be an issue. But there are several underachieving players on this team, while on the other hand, there are several players being put into positions they aren’t fit for and ultimately, failing.
There’s only so much Ron Wilson can do with this group of players, but there doesn’t seem to be a level of improvement here. Judging by his brief postgame report, there does seem to be a few players not connecting with Wilson right now. When Wilson pointedly remarks that certain players who get benched don’t understand why they’re not playing, Wilson’s methods seem to be falling on deaf years for a few players. Does it mean waiving said players and bringing up fresh ears? Clearly, changes will be made, and while they likely won’t be major ones as the roster is virtually tied up, there’s going to be a few new faces taking over some roles. The Leafs really have no choice now.
And like others have said, Wilson has to shoulder some of the blame. If there aren’t enough players to implement his style of play, he needs to change his tactics to compromise this lack of talent to actual results. A coach’s job is to use players to best succeed. But leaving Ian White on the bench for the final 30 seconds of the third period when he was clearly your best defenceman doesn’t seem like a prudent decision at all. Rickard Wallin who is clearly labouring on his defensive zone coverage looks to be playing too much minutes. Players like Mitchell and Stajan are shifted in and out, but expected to play as a first line centre capable of matching up with Kessel. That’s not playing to their strengths as dump and chase forwards, when clearly their line mates aren’t those kinds of players.
Despite all that, can we really pinpoint a singular problem for the Leafs? Every area of the Leafs from goaltending, defence, offence, and coaching all appear to have their problems. Other than window dressings, unless there’s suddenly an infusion of talent coming forward to the Leafs as a whole, the Leafs aren’t going to be significantly better. But this team isn’t a lost cause, nor is it non-salvageable. The motivation is there. The team is willing to stick up for each other, as most recently shown in the game against Ottawa on Tuesday. If the team needs a few call-ups to fully implement Wilson’s system and show up with a consistent effort, so be it. If even with the so-called changes, the team continues to blank on assignments, give up early leads, pick-up bad habits, then Ron Wilson and his coaching staff shouldn’t be immune from removal themselves either.
This team, somehow, somewhere, needs to stop caring about the fans, the media, and the management, and just play for the 23 guys in the locker room. Forget the distractions, trust each other, and play hockey. That’s it. If there are those unwilling or unable to get with the program, those are the players Burke and co. need to remove.

I just can’t be straight negative anymore. And I think I’ve tried hard not to be unfair in my criticisms. It’s fun to insult the Leafs as a self-loathing fan. I don’t think I could have remained a fan of the Leafs without poking fun. But at the end of the day, this is just a sport that I don’t have any vested interest other than being a supporter. Win or lose, I’m not affected personally. I love the Leafs. Love them. But what good is it to be miserable for something that’s supposed to be entertainment?

good teams don’t blow a 3-0 lead
So true.
I said after the Wild game, how can a team playing so lousily that just had a 2 game winning streak feel they could mail in a performance like they did that night? Same sort of applies here; how can a lousy team like this after taking a 3-0 lead in the first feel like they can ease off the gas and let Carolina back into the game, where the bad refereeing calls were a factor in deciding it?
I just don’t get it.

On the plus side....
It can’t get any lower. We’ve lost playing well, we’ve lost stinking the house out, we’ve lost getting screwed over, I think we’ve lost all the ways there are to lose.
If this is rock bottom, then all we can do is ride it out, stick by the Blue and White and await our time. Because one day, eventually, it’ll come….
