FIRST STAR -- TOMAS KABERLE, D, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Kaberle led the NHL in scoring last week with 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists) in four road games, helping the Maple Leafs post a 1-0-3 record. Kaberle registered a career-high five points (one goal, four assists) in a 6-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks Oct. 26, recorded two assists in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars Oct. 28 and earned one assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres Oct. 30. He closed the week by tallying a goal and three assists -- including the game-tying score at 19:06 of the third period -- in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens Oct. 31. Kaberle leads NHL defensemen in scoring with 17 points (two goals, 15 assists) and ranks second in the League in assists. He has tallied 450 career points with the Maple Leafs, eight behind Hall of Famer Tim Horton for second place among defensemen on the franchise's all-time scoring list.

Congrats to Tomas for edging out Pekka Rinne and Evegeni Nabokov for this week's top honour.

As I said this summer, I believe a contract extension would be the way to go with Kabby. Of course, now is the time we will start to hear the chatter about trading him now that his value is highest.

Is it April yet?

I AM DECLARING THIS THREAD

A CELEBRATION OF KABBY.

IF YOU WISH TO TALK ABOUT TRADING KABERLE, PLEASE MOVE TO TODAY’S FTB

a 1st round pick and a prospect should still be the asking price if this is the case

I’d still rather keep Kabby.

by floridaLEAF on Nov 2, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Well since Kaberle has more points than Crosby, I say one Sidney Crosby is the asking price. My logic is impeccable.

Still uneven, we should make them take toskie as well so we’re getting a fair deal.

Kabby had a freaking great week. Kudos to Sweetcheeks!

i heart kabby

anyone who wants to trade him is whack. imagine how much worse this current team is without kabby. it’s frightening.

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

Trading Kabs is a tough call. I have no idea what the projected window is for this team to really start competing.

If it’s less than 3 years, Kabs needs to be re-upped. If it’s a longer event horizon (as much as it saddens me to type this) Burke should pull the trigger.

Except of course

for the fact that they might actually still have a 1st round pick, and a decent young roster player to boot (i.e. Jakub Voracek) who could play with Kessel when he comes back.

We also don’t know how the PP would be doing with White and Stempniak on the point, or if Schenn would be getting more minutes, or if Jeff Finger would be playing ok in the line up, or if Carl Gunnarsson or Jonas Frogren would be doing ok as the 7th guy with the team.

We REALLY don’t know how any of it would be working. So to say they would suck without Kaberle is not necessarily accurate. Plus they’ve sucked pretty horribly with him, I’m not sure they could be that much worse.

That being said, he won’t be moved for a while anyway.

IT'S A CELEBRATION B*TCHES

Good for him in being recognised for his achievements. Hell of a week. In fact, you guys should all read TMLSiege’s fanpost about just how good the last seven days have been for Mr. Kaberle.

Way to go Kabby

This was in yesterday’s FTB (thanks, Mr. Black) but in case it was missed – Respect.

Aw,

Love Kabby. Must be a nice bright spot in an otherwise bleak first month. Hopefully, it’ll keep him thinking positive.

by JP Nikota on Nov 2, 2009 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Those kinds of numbers are worth way more than a first round pick.

I think BB knows what’s he’s doing or something.

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Nov 2, 2009 3:15 PM EST reply actions

but be reasonable, kabby wont produce like this all season long…… i dont think…..

it has to be a deal similar to carter and a 1st for me to consider trading him at this point

You never know. Being able to hit Kessel with a breakout pass, sending him into the attacking zone with the puck on his stick, could allow him to continue (or possibly increase) his point output.

You mean

you think he’ll put up points a la Paul Coffey or Bobby Orr on the 25th ranked offensive club in the NHL?

That’s a bit insane. Sorry.

He’s putting up some pretty good numbers right now on the 25th ranked offensive club in the NHL. I’m not saying he will get 100 points, but ending the season at a ppg (that way i’m covered in case of injuries) isn’t too far fetched.

Kaberle is scary good with stretch passes. Park Kessel on the opposing blue line when Kabby has the puck and it’s in the fucking net.

Yeah

Kaberle is not going to score 116 points this season…let’s be realistic here guys.

More important than the Player of the Week Honours

would be the top spot on the Leafs all time scoring list for D men.

He’s 8 points away which means he’s a virtual lock to get top spot within the next few weeks.

Oh and he’ll have done it in about 400 fewer games. So yeah… he’s tops in that regard. Best offensive D man to play for the Leafs (other than a few games of Brian Leetch… Larry Murphy…).

This makes me wish I knew more about Salming.

by JP Nikota on Nov 2, 2009 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

It makes me wish

I knew how to read.

Apparently I read 2nd as 1st.

Salming is well out in front…

Funny how over the top things can get when you forget players like that.

So yeah Salming had 768 points in 1099 games… Kaberle is at 450 in 750 games. 318 points short, with 349 games to match. Possible? Maybe…

Either way – apologies to the Salming fan club for my mistake.

The part I find strange is, his career ended with the Leafs when I was 10, and yet my memories of him are sketchy at best. I guess 20 years will do that to my hindsight.

He’s 8 points away from being 2nd on that list. Only about 300 behind Salming still.

by Clawson on Nov 2, 2009 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone ever find out the real story of why they called Salming ‘The King’?

I have an inkling he was a ladies man – even with the Frankenface
