Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but nobody seems to have noticed that the Montreal Canadiens have been a truly horrible team this season.

Gabriel Desjardins, fresh off of watching Queen's upset Laval, takes a look at the Canadiens' and Maple Leafs' underlying numbers. The conclusion is only a surprise if you haven't been paying attention.

The big difference between Montreal and Toronto is that the Canadiens are 8-1 in overtime/shoot-out while the Leafs are 1-6.

After regulation, the Habs are 3-10-9 and the Leafs are 3-11-7.

I noticed

But when you try to tell a Habs fan that, the typical response is “Laffs sux 1967” etc. etc.

If this was the 1920s, University of Toronto would so be university football champions.

But surely the Habs “awesomeness” at circus time hockey will be advantageous for them in the playoffs, right (assuming they get there)?

They also undeservingly made the playoffs last season, finishing at .500 in regulation time and with the 9th best record in the East (30-30-22), yet got in ahead of the more deserving Panthers (34-30-18). Montreal had a 11-11 record at the circus while Florida was 7-11. The two teams were actually tied in points at 93, but because they were also tied in “wins” (41), Montreal got in due to the third tiebreaker, teams’ records against each other. It shouldn’t have came down to that, IMO, because Florida was the better team when it really counted.

The Habs are great at 4 on 4 OT’s and shootouts (although last night they lost a shootout…maybe the Leafs backwards helmets had something to do with it…) ;)

But since those don’t exist in the PLAYOFFS!!!1, if they do get there it won’t be for long ;)

its nice to know that if Burke had spent all his money on offense, the leafs wouldnt be much better off

The Rangers and Canadiens were tied for 8th in the East and both had worse records than Florida…And Anaheim’s record was 9th in the West. The Ducks were the luckiest (no pun intended) last year – 19th-best record overall. The most egregious failure is Tampa making the playoffs in 2006-07 with the 21st-best record.

by Hawerchuk on Nov 22, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

The Leafs were screwed out of the playoffs by the shutout the first two post-lockout seasons right?

by Clawson on Nov 22, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t remember if it happened in 2005-06 (they got eliminated when Tampa Bay scored in overtime when the Leafs had 2 games left…) 2006-07 yes…New Jersey tied the Islanders up with 0.9 seconds left to force overtime in the final game of the regular season, and the Islanders won the shootout and got in instead of Toronto (with the Devils playing Scott Clemmensen in goal…).

But then, the Islanders didn’t last long in the playoffs. Last season at least Anaheim beat the Sharks and then took the Wings to 7 games. Montreal…well we all know what happened to THEM ;)

I remember that Isles/Devils debacle

right after the best game of that season, a 6-5 victory that kicked the Habs out the playoffs.

I had a Habs fan throw a fit about the exact same thing when I pointed this out after he bragged about beating Washington in regulation.

Queen’s didn’t “upset” Laval. It’s not an “upset” when it’s the inevitable realization of MANIFEST DESTINY. VANIER!!!!1
