Ian White Puts His Butt on the Line Every Night...
...and looks fantastic in the process. The little man with the big moustache plays all out every night, and last night was no exception. The rumour was that there were 19 NHL scouts at the game last night, and chances are #7 was on their radar.
What has quickly come to my attention is the fact that these games could very well be the last I see of some of my favorite players in a Leafs uni. I know everyone in Leafs RAUP has decided that every underachiever on the current squad needs to go, but the reality is just the opposite.
So, until the deadline passes, I'll be treating each game as if it could be any player's last, and soaking in every minute of it.

If Burke trades Ian White...
I just may personally go out of my way to corner Burke and show him the practical definition of belligerence, pugnacity, testosterone, and truculence.
There are few players I’d trade White for. Burke better not make a panic move.
As hard as the Leafs worked last night...
(and let’s be honest, they worked pretty damn hard)
they still play on the periphery. Their wings and centermen spend the majority of the time outside the slot. Hagman-Grabs-Blake like controlled the play deep in the Isles zone last night, but almost all of that time was spent with all three guys either in the corner or behind the net.
It wasn’t until late in the game and Wilson put Primeau and Mayers on different lines that the Buds started to get pressure in the slot.
This is the main reason why Chris Hanson should be waiting for a phone call today.
Heh, the radio keeps making a big deal
of the 61 shots this morning
but 61 shots doesn’t really matter when 50 of them were either weak shots, straight at the goalie, un-deflected etc. or any combination of the above
its good that they’re getting the puck on the net but they need to set up plays more often or learn to take better shots… they got lots of jump, energy and zest but not enough patience to make proper use of it

To be fair to Vesa
He had an outstanding game on Sat and helped keep the team in it, I dare say he even won the game for Toronto in the shootout even if he only had to make one save. Gotta give credit were credit is due.
He was fine last night till that sudden collapse. It seems Vesa’s confidence is extremely shakey, he can start a night with great confidence but it just takes ONE bad goal (usually scored on him glove-side) to shatter it and he turns into a piece of swiss cheese.
I find that it’s too convenient that Vesa gets a groin injury shortly after letting in 3 goals on 3 shots… I say he was pulled by RW/BB wants to protect what is left of the man’s ego/confidence by giving that excuse.
I Hope This Doesn't Happen
Ian White is exactly the kind of guy you have to surround your star players with. What better example for the youngsters than to follow someone who is team-first?
I also have last night’s recap up.

I hope it’s not White, but if someone moves, it’s not going to be an underachieving plug (unless it’s a cap space deal with Chicago). I would look at White, Ponikarovsky, or Hagman as most likely to bring back something worth acquiring (I could see White being kept due to being younger, but still). I’ll be sad to see any of them go, but hopefully whatever comes back dulls the pain.

Trade Kaberle...
why is it that Burke refuses to trade the only player that would fetch ANYTHING on the market .. who cares that hes got a no-trade.. make him waive it.
i was @ the game last night and Kaberle played like shit.. quite a few terrible passes.. failure to keep the puck in the zone on powerplays.. and stood by n watched the puck go right by him on the game winning goal.
we arent makin the playoffs @ this rate… please get a 1st rounder for him.
It is highly unlikely that Kabby would fetch a first rounder at this time.
who cares that hes got a no-trade.. make him waive it.
Yea okay. That’s gonna work.

27:22 ice time. Kaberle made the offence look awesome all night. If only the Leafs could finish, Kaberle might have had six or seven assists. I didn’t see any terrible passes but I did see a few brilliant ones, plus excellent puck control. Failing to keep the puck in the zone happened a few times but mostly as a result of poor passing, not Kaberle’s positioning.
It was White who couldn’t make a soft pass within reach of Kaberle in their own zone in OT that led to the winning goal.
Kaberle is 1-point away from eclipsing Tim Horton to become the 2nd highest scoring defenceman in Leafs Franchise History. And yet…
the only player that would fetch ANYTHING on the market .. who cares that hes got a no-trade.. make him waive it.
Is it any wonder that few superstars want to come to Toronto? That’s just not respectful. It’s embarrassing and sad.

And then in OT Kaberle’s lazy own zone play combined with Ian White’s being out of position led to an effective 2-0 in front of Gustavsson.
The best part was the Islanders announcers saying Gustavsson overcommitted as if having a guy on each side of the crease is something he should be expected to handle nonchalantly.
Expanding on that; those are the kinds of goals that are the defense’s fault. Two uncovered players scoring tap ins.

It was a very strange play. The bounce pass from White wasn’t a good choice (why not go hard around on the reverse or flip it airborne up the middle? A waist high bounce pass to a d-man in traffic isn’t the best option).
I can’t figure out what Kaberle was doing when the puck went by him.
The Isles’ shot took a strange bounce off the side of the net. From there it was a nice pass across for a tap in…
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
I think that Kaberle didn’t realise that there was an Islander there. I think he thought that he could catch up with the puck up-ice

He was fucking day dreaming or thinking about jerking off or whatever he does in the defensive zone because he never plays defense.

so last night was Kaberle’s fault…got it.
A Toronto sports blog, where unabashed homerism is alive and well...
‘Fault’ varies and isn’t confined to just one player most of the time but just like the second goal doesn’t get scored if Blake doesn’t turn the puck over at the Leafs’ own blue line the OT goal doesn’t get scored if Kaberle isn’t already thinking about his shootout move.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I’d take one step back on the OT goal. It doesn’t get scored if White makes a better decision with the puck.

The OT goal is his and White’s, you can divide it up however you want.

Shots were 26-5 in the thrid period and OT. The Leafs outchanced the Islanders by a kajillion. The defence must be doing something right. Good offence originates with good defence and goes hand in hand. The Leafs lack of finish has nothing to do Kaberle, I don’t think. The way they controllerd the game last night, the score shoulda been 7-3 and how we gave up that one lousy shot on goal against in OT would be meaningless disussion.

Beauchemin wasn’t going to get to that puck on the sideboards before Bergenheim. He got caught flat-footed in the neutral zone, but he had Kabby backing him up, and he backchecked like crazy
If you pinch there, you’ve got to get the puck or the man, and he probably wouldn’t have gotten either. and then we’d be killing him for making a horrible pinch.

Of course I watched the game. That 3rd period was the most wonderful period of hockey I’ve seen in a long time. The Leafs were running the Islanders out of the building and completely dominated puck possession in the third. They were amazing. They could’ve had an empty net for most of the third period and the Islanders still wouldn’t have scored.
Completly controlling the play for an entire period begins at the blue line.
I don’t understand blaming Kaberel or White for that mistake. I’m looking at Ron Wilson for putting them out there together at such a late stage of the game.
by general borschevsky on Nov 24, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions
they are both supposed top 4 defensemen. One makes a mistake, the other should cover for him. They both made mistakes, it ended up in the back of the net.
They’ve got to be better than that.

Virginia congressman Jim Moran, who moved to Washington in the 1970s and instantly became a fan of the team, says the mismanagement and commercialization of the franchise has robbed it of its meaning to him.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I thought the article was excellent.
Here’s the thing about fan loyalty: it’s not black and white. The media likes to present it that way, as if you can only be a diehard fan or no fan at all. For example, every article about fighting in the NHL breaks out the old argument that “if you ban it, real fans aren’t just going to just stop watching”, etc.
But that’s not how it works. There are degrees of fandom. And once a fan moves down a notch, it’s awfully hard to move them back up. There’s just too many other entertainment options out there.
That’s why the Leafs (and other teams) should worry. You can’t just point to attendance or even TV ratings. If your connection to the fanbase is weakening and those are the only metrics you’re looking at, you won’t even see the problem until it’s too late to fix it.

Metrics
The Redskins say there are still 170,000 people on the waiting list for general-admission season tickets and the team’s local-TV ratings have stayed relatively constant since 2005.
Season ticket waiting list numbers is irrelevant for a number of reasons not the least of which is that the majority of people won’t be able to afford the tickets. And if they do get the chance, and the team’s been shit, that’s when they might not buy them which that waiting list wouldn’t predict. Also, lots of those people likely are no longer alive/living in the area.

The Hockey News has named their top 10 players on one year contracts and, get ready for it, Andrew Raycroft makes the list.
From this I can only conclude that there are only 10 players in the entire NHL who are on one-year deals or the author was completely messed up on peyote when he typed it up.

Anyone hearing anything about player movement?
So it looks like Mitchell is out for the next little while. I’d argue that this is the best thing that could happen for Mitchell at this point. He looks overwhelmed at times, never certain of what he’s going to do out there with the puck on his stick. I feel that he needs to figure out what kind of player he’s going to be: Johnny Malkin or John Mitchell.
I still feel he has top-six 6 ability, but as a winger. Hard shot, strong puck-handling skills, good skating ability, size.
Toskala is also rumoured to have hurt himself on the 2nd goal. I caught a bit of the game last night when I got home from the library. Looked like he hurt himself on the 2nd goal. If that’s the case, why the fuck didn’t he get off the ice before the Isles put a 3rd goal behind him?! Unbelievably selfish. He needs to fucking go.
I’m guessing that one of the following players will be called up to take Mitchell’s spot in the line-up: Bozak or Tlusty. I choose Bozak because we’re in dire need of a two-way centre who can distribute the puck and back-check. Stajan and Mitchell just aren’t cutting it. Bozak can play second fiddle to Kessel and play his game. I think a player like Ponikarovsky would be a good complement; size, fore-checker, etc. Tlusty may get called up and Kessel will move to the middle; Tlusty will play on the wing with Ponikarvosky on the opposite. It makes a great deal of sense to have one or both of those guys up here.
As for Blake, I honestly don’t know what’s keeping Burke from sending his ass to the minor. If he’s waived, I have little doubts that there’s someone out there willing to take on his contract, but not pay to get it.
Agree on Mitchell. He definitely needs to start getting results.
Agree on Bozak (if there is a call-up. Could just be Walling going back in)
As for Blake, he’s frustrating as hell. His puck recovery/pursuit is incredible but then he can’t make a pass, take a pass, or finish a chance.

he was signed
for all the wrong reasons
Blake wasn’t a bad player, the man’s a 50 to 55 points a season player, more assists then goals until that one year he scored more goals then assists and for some odd reason a few people thought he’s an elite sniper and he was signed as such.
He’s either clearly crumbling under the pressure placed on him with the expectation to score a ton or he hit his peak already and is on the way down… or both

At the start of the season we hoped for the playoffs.
When that evaporated in October we accepted it and we hoped that the Leafs could finish in the 10-15 draft range.
When that evaporated in November we accepted it and we hoped that the Leafs could finish outside the draft lottery at the least.
When that evaporates in December we’ll be correct in saying “Taylor Hall for Kessel is probably a good deal for us, and at worst an even swap.”
