Leafs at Lightning
Puck drop: 7PM ET TSN
Now that Negative Tuesday is behind us it's time to realize that the Leafs have four points in their last three games which is pretty decent for them to be quite honest. With Toskala injured Gustavsson gets the start tonight. He looked solid and composed on Monday night despite not getting a lot of work until he got hung out to dry in OT.
Christian Hanson was called up and should be playing with Grabovski and Hagman according to AM640's Jonas Siegel. Hanson had a goal and an assist in a short five game stint with the Leafs last year. I'm hoping he gets thrown on the PP with Kessel; Hanson's a big body that plays physical in front of the net.
"Front of the net, that's where I've got to be," said Hanson. "Go to the corners, try to dig out the puck for them. Try to clear space." - The Star
The Lightning are currently 8th in the East with a 9-5-7 record largely due to the play of Antero Niittymaki who in 11GP has compiled a .936SV%. This could be another ugly night if the Leafs can't punch the puck home. Vincent Lecavalier seems to be finding his touch, he has five points in his last four games and now has 19 points in 21GP on the season. Steven Stamkos has two goals in his last three and is tied for fifth in the NHL in goals with 15. Stamkos is third in the league in power play goals so the Leafs will also need to stay out of the box tonight.
Remember your SPG picks, check out Raw Charge if you want any more Lightning news, and remember to come back thirty minutes before game time to catch the start of our game day open thread.

it hasn’t been discussed here very much, but Beauchemin has been playing pretty damn good hockey as of late. Earning them dollar bills yo.
yup
playing awesome, but he can’t shut down Stamkos, Lecavalier, St. Louis AND Malone… they’re on different lines…

From Raw Charge
Stamkos, St. Louis & Malone back as a line tonight.
Tampa 3rd and 4th lines are brutal. They’re playing their defenceman Foster as a forward tonight.
No Mattias Ohlund either :D

Ok, shooting a little high.
But YES! Positive thoughts! No drop passes! Off the glass and out! Don’t shoot at the goalie’s crest!
probably. but one 5-game win streak any time this year, and 2 games above .500 the rest of the way, and they’re a .500 team, which hopefully means not finishing bottom 5. DARE TO DREAM.
i actually just remembered that i drunkenly bet a friend that the leafs wouldn’t finish bottom 5. round of golf at a course of our choice. they better f-ing turn it around.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
DARE TO DREAM.
We need to print t-shirts, brother.
I bet some Senators fans that we’d finish higher than Ottawa in the standings. I need to stop making bets.

.500 on the front, ‘Dare to Dream’ on the back. comedy gold.
2 years ago I had lost a bet to a friend about morrow vs tkachuk’s fantasy performances. the night of the cup final as i was paying up ($20 – in pint and wing form), i bet an additional $25 that oil was above $100 a barrel (it was) and another $25 that the stanley cup weighed less than 40 lbs (it does – 34 or something. those guys hoist it over their head way too easy to be more than 40). went in down $20, came out up $30. SWEET.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
I might seriously have to make that t-shirt.
and that’s some impressive wagering, my good man.

well, Leafs are at 7:00 Eastern and Hawks at 10:30, so I’ll be hoping for an online feed of the former that doesn’t vanish like the other night’s, then going to the Second City Hockey meetup to watch the Hawks. I care about Hossa but I’m tired of hearing about him…

he’s under contract through 2010. so he’s lame-duck status already, as he’s refused to sign our extension.
The Red Sox are on a “full-court press” to acquire him before the winter meetings, which commence on Dec. 7.

Also, Selig needs to be fired and a Salary cap must be placed asap. That way the Yankees will only be able to put 5 men on their team because that’s all they can afford

no salary cap though, think of how soul destroying VW and Rios’ contracts would be in a salary cap baseball world. also selig has Warren Buffett level decision making compared to Harry Buttman (Gary Bettman)

There needs to be a cap
Otherwise it’s a 5 man league. Imagine hockey without a cap. Leafs, Rangers, Red Wings and Avalanche would be the only 4 teams worth watching. Why? Because they can spend as much money as they want. Imagine if there was no cap after the lockout. Our top line would most likely be a super line featuring Danny Briere, Marian Gaborik and all sorts of talented players who want a shitload of cake. A cap evens the field. There will be a CBA anyways (most likely 25%). Is it fair that the Yankees can buy every free agent available? Is it fair that they can put an All-star team out there every day? No.
Also, Selig is a moron.

But is it so bad
That an organization goes out to buy the best players available because they want what the fans want and that is a championship? I mean if there is no rule against it, and you have the revenue and fan base to support a billion dollar team, why not? I know being a Leafs fan for years that concept is totally foreign to MLSE but if it wouldn’t of it been nice for them to reward their loyal fans once with a team that was built or bought to win?
I for one wouldn’t. For the record, I am not a Yankees fan as baseball, truth be told, isn’t even a sport.
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
yeah selig is a tit.. but i said compared to bettman.. which i guess is like comparing hitler to the devil so point to you i suppose..
i don’t know how i’d feel about a salary cap in the MLB, the logic of levelling the playing field does make sense but at the same time that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be more entertaining. baseball’s team dynamic depends on contribution from multiple players consistently so the impact of one big free agent signing or one star player is less than in other sports.. loading up on salary is just one way of competing in that league and forcing a team to take on a player with a negative WAR because they can’t afford to pick up a player who would contribute because of cap restrictions will just result in a shitty product on the field.. on the other hand this is a leafs blog not a jays blog.. just for the record fuck the yankees in their rich asses but i would love to see joe mauer light up the jays even if its for 25 mill a season
