Leafs No Turkeys
The feel good vibe we're building here extended all the way down to Tampa Bay last night, and the result? A Leafs win.
Lots to like about the game, but even more to like about the links, so lets get to it. Oh, and before I go, happy gobble gobble to our American friends. I'll be stuffing my face with turkey in Orange County today, and may take in a Ducks game (it's a poultry theme...) tomorrow. Have a good one gang.

USA USA!
My girlfriend is a yankee and she left me and our dog to party with her family in San Fran for a week (or two). So, as a Canadian, today I want to give thanks for the great country of the United States of America and all her citizens who make it so.

Ducks 3 – Canes 2
Giving us back sole possession of 29th, with a game in hand on the Canes.
We’re coming for you, Minnesota!

Just wanted to propose a trade...
White and Hagman for Jordan Staal.
Another winger for Malkin/Crosby. Stabilizes their defense. Equal money between exchanged. Maybe throw in Stajan/Mitchell for their third-line in the middle.
Any objections?
People just went crazy all of a sudden on this ‘trade Hagman’ idea, and I don’t know who came up with it, but it’s got to stop. Hagman is one of our best players, and shouldn’t be going ANYWHERE until at very least the trade deadline. Even then, unless we get a king’s ransom, there’s not much point in making a hole where he was playing to land a prospect and a 2nd rounder.
if hagman was like 3 or 4 years older id say trade him at the deadline but he is still young enough to keep his production going until the end of his contract at the very least. if they trade him for anything less than an A prospect ill be pissed

the thing is
sometimes you have to give up something good, to get something even better.
Also, feel free to speculate trades you’d like to see on here. Just see Godd Till’s rules re: making it realistic.

If Hagman has his career year then we should trade the shit out of him at the deadline.

But for Hagman and White I want a lot more back than Jordan Staal.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
yes
but that’s not happening, the Pens have weathered their incredible string of injuries to defensemen.
If Hagman keeps this up, he’ll be an excellent trading peice at the deadline.

indeed ship him to a bubble team for a ransom

jared, what would you want back? Its hard to guage what a player is worth these days, antro and moore both got 2nds, id want more than a 2nd for sure

it’d probably be more than a 2nd based on the fact that his contract doesn’t expire at the end of this year
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
yeah, I think (if Hagman continues to play at this pace) he would be worth a high first or a 2nd and a decent prospect
but i dont think he’d net that

I don’t want Jordan Staal because he’s not that good.
Hard to look bad when you’re behind Malkin and Crosby as a center. Staal plays easy easy easy minutes.

he really is cushioned by easy minutes and the fact there is no pressure on him at all. If he has a shit game, it doesn’t matter unless Crosby and Malkin do the same.

Not to mention that he has two more points than Hagman has goals.
Hagman AND White? Nope.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
I think people that want him are dazzled by his draft position.
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
The thing is, a 2nd doesn’t seem like enough for Haggy, but I don’t think that many teams would be willing to part with a 1st to bring him in. That is, unless he has a career year.
He’s probably worth more to us than to anyone else. Typical problem.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
yeah, that’s what will hurt his value on the market. To a contender, he’s a spare part winger dropped in at the deadline to pop some goals and add depth. To us, he’s a critical piece of our top 6. Other than Kessel, maybe Poni, only Hagman will truly be a goal scoring threat out there for the Leafs.

if they both play to the level burke expected when he signed them, our D will be in great shape.
it’s too bad Schenn’s taken a bit of turn for the worse this year, but Ian White’s really been a nice surprise, and Gunnarson, so I guess that evens it out a bit.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
I think Schenn will turn it around. He was great last year I really doubt it was a fluke. The sophomore slump is a common phenomenon every agrees exists until it happens to one of their rookies and then it’s panic time.

agreed chemmy, Schenn will still be a stud. It would have to be a bust of epic proportions (woahh!) for him to fail

I actually like that Wilson is trying to weather the storm of Luke’s struggles by giving him softer minutes. The kid is burdened by the immense expectations his excellent rookie campaign garnered. It might take him this season to truly learn what it means to be a pro.

he does. I think people see the dip in his total minutes as a slight or a comment on his play (it’s not perfect but he’s 20 and learning), I see it as Burke went out and got 2 veteran d-men to swallow minutes and lead by example. One turned the corner only to get hurt, the other has been excellent this week, especially last night. Schenn will learn from them, that is part of the reason they are here.

Gunnarson
I read a quote from Wilson this morning saying Gunnar was the best defenceman in camp, but they didn’t have room for him. What is that about? This suggests the whole accountability deal is a load of crap. Not that this is a new story, just more evidence.
by Leaf in Habland on Nov 26, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions
Nope
It suggests that waivers is a very real concept that people need to learn and understand.

I actually relaly enjoyed researching this. The ins and outs of the CBA really intrigue me, and I’m very interested in the management and business side of the game. It’s somewhere I could really see myself trying to move once I get the CA stuff out of the way. (One more week till the results come out; time is moving backwards)

What is the point of making threats about accountability if you can’t/don’t back them up, regardless of whether or not the reason is waiver issues?
by Leaf in Habland on Nov 26, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions
Because players know that waivers are a consideration.
Burke is saying that there are situations where the impact is negative enough that he’ll ignore waivers.
To be honest, the only player I’d say has been bad enough to waive is Toskala.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Fair enough, my point was just to point out that even the coach recognizes that our best players are not the ones who make the team. Whether it is a waiver issue or not is beside the point. Actually it only reinforces the pointlessness of the accountability argument if you have to be really really bad to be sent down, and not just worse than another, younger, cheaper player.
by Leaf in Habland on Nov 26, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions
There are different forms of accountability. Wilso has been rewarding people with better linemates, PP time, and more ice-time. Conversely, he’s benched players and put them in worse situations when they are bad.
Demoting players that are not waiver eligible is largely a cut your nose off to spite your face situation.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
On Komisarek’s return, this is what Wilson said:
"We do things, if you can, on merit," Wilson said after the Leafs practice on Thursday in preparation for Friday’s game against the Florida Panthers. "Somebody else is going to have to come out of the lineup when [Komisarek] is ready to play. It’s not going to be Carl, I can tell you that."
The most likely candidate is Garnet Exelby, who has been rotating in and out of the lineup most of the season with fellow veteran Jeff Finger. Finger had just established himself in the lineup ahead of Exelby when he suffered an undisclosed injury to his lower body in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals.
Notice his little provisio of “if we can”. There’s limitations to what you can do, it does really suck that we can’t ice the best team that we have player-wise, though.
Also, it looks like Blake is being put on notice, he was back on the 4th line in practice today.

Do you think...
…we could all agree to call it the “undead Brendan Burke story” (instead of “undying”). It would give this story a frisson of excitement, you know, with the possible involvement of a zombie, vampire or werewolf.
Just a suggestion.
