Saturday Night Just Isn't Right Without You
Oh, this little thing? Just something I threw together. On a beach. In November.
- No better place to start today than round at Dr Steve's place - here covering the budding optimism in Leaf land.
- It's a battle of the Leaf blogs over at NHL Arena. Follow your hearts, cast your votes and may the best one win! (There, was that diplomatic enough for you PPP?)
- The stragglers of Friday's game reviews, in short order. Jared in ten words or less, Budblog, Bone's Corner and a response from those Litter Box Cats.
- Esteemed colleague Wrap Around Curl and her thoughts on the Burkes, Snr and Jnr.
- ..a topic also dealt with the usual tact you'd expect from Mr H. Berger, Esq. Toronto Sports Media reports.
- Some collated thoughts and stats from the Maple Leaf Hot Stove minds.
- Johnny Bower bobblehead night at the depleted Marlies ends in defeat as Chad Rau bites the hand the once fed him to lift Houston to a 2 - 1 win.
- Puck Daddy has the 10 biggest NHL stories of the last decade, whilst the Fanhouse brings us the strange tale of booby-trapped ice in San Jose.
- Hold your luncheon plans - the non-hockey link for today has it cracked. Courtesy of EnglishRussia, it's hairy sausages! Not as horrific as it sounds, I assure you.

Chad Rau
was never fed by the Leafs.
They never signed him to a contract, so he signed with Minnesota as a free agent this past off season when his college career ended.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

Via Jonas640 on twitter
Grabbo and Beauch got into a scuffle during practice and had to be pulled apart by Hunter and Blake.
Taking on happy trails? there is that crazy little bugger we’ve been looking for in grabbo, lets hope he can translate it to a game

wow, the hawks had three shorthanded goals in the first period…that’s disgusting.
Anybody know the chances of Toronto picking up one of Chicago’s players due to their cap problem? is sharp still on the menu, or have they re-signed him?

Sharp is signed for another 2-3 years.
talks with Chicago have all but died since they dont want to pay the price Burke wants for a salary dump

if the hawks do sign toews, kane and keith for $6M each (on average), they’ll have 14 players signed for next year with a cap hit of $58M (15 players with $60.4M cap hit if they don’t get rid of sopel).
they have several players with salaries between $3M-$4M (sharp, versteeg, seabrook, barker, bfyuglien, bolland), i think at least 3 of them are going to have to be moved and replaced with cheaper versions. if you got rid of 3 of them and replaced them with $1m contracts, that’s only freeing up $7.5M (3x $3.5M – 3 x $1M) to sign another 8 or 9 players, which still may not be enough.
i think there’ll be lots of opportunity to pursue their players in the offseason (or before). they’re in a jam from a salary cap perspective which hurts their bargaining position, but there will likely be interest from a lot of teams, which may balance things out.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

Depending on how Chicago handles this, the Hawks could either be set up for a long time or could see their window slam shut in about two years.

Saw this
• Take this to the bank: The Chicago Blackhawks will move Cam Barker’s $3-million US salary this summer because fellow defenceman Bryan Campbell and his $7 million salary is staying put.
The Blackhawks also have hugely underrated Swede Niklas Hjalmarsson playing 20 minutes a game. Barker plays 14 minutes a night and teams are always looking for power-play pointmen.
Trading Barker isn’t too much of a salary dump, there could be a serious hockey deal done there… but if it happens this summer, I can’t see us having anything to offer.
