Is Today Phil Kessel Day?
Today is that day we dream about all year. The day where Phil Kessel appears from his hibernation, and if he sees his shadow then he'll put chocolate eggs underneath all our Kessel trees, decorated with one single ornament. Or something like that.
Phil is lost in the embroidering of his last name. (via media.canada.com)
Truth be told, as we go to press, Kessel's debut is still not certain. TSN has reported that the Leafs are still awaiting results from a series of tests. That of course, isn't stopping the conjecture, and the wishful thinking. I for one hope that if Phil's ready, he gets to play tonight. If he's not, then let's not rush him.

It was well worth it.
Also, it’s a visual refresh.
Change is scary now but remember when we went from SBN 1.0 to this? You’ll all get used to it.

it’s just that, according to my reader, “late last night” was yesterday morning, about 10 AM Pacific.
I wrote the FTB about 12.5 hours after that, so chances are i just didn’t scroll far enough back in my reader to catch it.

PLAYOFFS!!!11ONE!!!
OK, ok, ok. I know Phil Kessel doesn’t HAVE to play today. And if he does, he doesnt HAVE to score every time he touches the puck.
But if he could that would be awesome.
Have to agree with the TSM post. The amount of positive press I’ve read about the 1-11 Leafs team in the last week is amazing.
I guess it’s because they hit so low so soon, they had no other place to write to. Also, Cox is a total Burke homer and stuck his neck out and predicted the Leafs would make the playoffs, so he might have a vested interest in accentuating the positive.
I don’t expect Kessel to score, but if he unleashes a sick wrister top corner don’t pretend Leafs Nation won’t be spilling beers and flipping furniture over.

heh
this Melnyk thing is amusing. He agreed to structure the contract the way it was done, so really isn’t it his fault that he had to pay that $4 mill bonus?
Also, with how Penner’s been playing, I think the Oilers lucked out that Heatley refused to be traded there.

Burke was too mad at the Penner offer sheet to go after him now, via trade at least.
If Penner makes it to UFA, though, I think there’ll be an offer.
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
If Hanson fails to develop into a top 6 power forward in the next year or so, Burke will drive hard at a UFA like Penner. Id still rather have Horton, but im starting to think thats a pipe dream

I don’t understand how this situation is really much different from the McCabe situation last summer when the Leafs had to wait until September to move him so that McCabe would pick up his bonus, except that the Leafs didn’t cry about it.
by general borschevsky on Nov 3, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions
That's the big difference, but...
Keeping him around was not an option either. McCabe’s attitude punched his own ticket out of town. It was clear that he had to go, and other then collecting his bonus, I don’t think he had any desire to block the trade. Once he got his money he was happy to leave. The Leafs didn’t make a big fuss about that, they just dealt with it.
by general borschevsky on Nov 3, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
yes
but it’s different when the player requests a trade, you accomodate him, and then he says “no” and it costs you $4 mill.
We had to wait to make McCabe attractive to other teams to take him. The Oilers were willing to pay the bonus money.
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
I think Melnyk just wants to cause Heatley some headaches because of what happened in the summer. I doubt that he’ll get out of paying that $4 million bonus though.
