Maple Leafs 0 v. Sabres 3: Surprise, Surprise

I don't know what the deal was with the fans booing the Maple Leafs. Are they shocked that a very good Buffalo Sabres team beat the Leafs 3-0? First off, the Sabres are better. Bottom line. Second, they are the Buffalo Sabres. They could dress the Wellington Dukes Provincial Jr. A team and the Sabres' mystique would be enough to beat the Leafs.

Seems like there was a lot of rage in the game thread too. I get it. It's frustrating to see a lot of hard work come to naught but a million f-bombs does't rescue the game. Sometimes the Leafs will lose beacuse the opponent is better. In this case, as in those, it's more interesting to read about what the Leafs' need to do to get to that team's level instead of a 100th instance of "Fuck (player)". So let's get back on track: What did you like from this game? What needs to improve?

Disclaimer: I slept through most of the second and woke up to a 2-0 deficit but that first period was pretty much what I expected from the buds this year. Lots of big hits, lots of hard-skating, lots of chances and lots of good saves. What was missing? The goals. Sigh.

To put you all in a better frame of mind - Let's all laugh at Keith Ballard:

I don't think Miller was as good as the commentators were saying.

The Sabres really played well in their own zone. None fo the leafs got a lot of really bona fide scoring chances.

Lots of half chances, pucks bouncing over sticks, players getting tied up.

Therein lies the solution. Never mind that Ian White struggled a bit tonight with his usual share of giveaways, but White helped Schenn and that’s all that matters. My love for Ian White is going to be hard to maintain without any snarkiness.

by bkblades on Nov 30, 2009 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

White is a much better offensive player...

..and that took a lot of pressure off of him instead of he and Exelby being completely confused about which one is supposed to be moving the puck and which one should be going way out of position to try to hit someone.

He even ended up with his share of opportunities to put a good shot on net but I feel like he hesitates too much when he’s going to shoot. It seems like every time he gets the puck at the point he pumps and fakes before he shoots. He needs to start just teeing them up and letting it rip, if for no other reason than to make help sell the pump fake when he does choose to use it.

He had a nice wrister from the point that a better player would have probably tipped on goal, but someone (I can’t remember who) whiffed on the re-direction.

Really good looking in real life.

Brett Hull scoring on you guys in ‘99 was karma? Just askin’.

Like I said.

Thank you for proving my point. That played itself out nicely.

sigh...

We were not well represented in this matchup.

Really good looking in real life.

If that was the case you’d think a lot more things would go well for Buffalo.

I know we all love Kessel

But if that cross-crease from Matt Stajan had been on the tape, we’d have been in the game, if not likely to have won. We’re playing great, getting our chances, and despite what everyone says about our lack of finish and power, we’re getting to the net and we’re scoring. There’s no way this game is a shutout if we had a true centre beside Kessel. I love the kid to death, and he’ll score 40, but he’s a much more effective tool in my mind if we get just one guy to get him the puck in GOOD areas, without forcing him to manufacture something from nothing.

yeah, one more player of Star caliber would be a HUGE change for this team. One player alone can only do so much, two can win a game for you more often than not.
I fear we wont get this player until the off season at earliest

Savard is a free agent I believe.

Reunite him and Kessel because.. you know… Kessel is obviously nothing without him.

You guys are thinking way too small.

Blake for Optimus Prime. He’s a truck. He’s got wheels. Lots of them. Literally. And you think Phaneuf hits hard, wait till you see several tons of metal hitting at highway speeds. yeah. And his stick reach would be so good he could stand in front of our net and handle the puck in front of the other guys.

Savard just signed a 7 year 4.2 mil cap hit extension with the Bruins as per TSN

Agree

100% not just because the pass was shit but because a better player wouldn’t have forced that pass or the one that led to the third goal. Stajan knows his best chance to get points is to pass to Kessel but on that play a fake pass could have led to a goal or at least a good shot!

The Leafs need to think ‘Shoot first’ and let the other guy jump on the rebound
