The Leafs are 4 wins and an overtime loss out of 6th in the East. Provided the eight teams between them and 6th lose five in a row, of course. Playoffs!!!1

The functional equivalent of rooting for Microsoft

I love this quote from Malcolm Gladwell:

To me, the hard cap in football — and, to a lesser extent, the soft cap in basketball — are what makes those sports so interesting. It’s what makes them sports. Contests where one player has significantly more resources than another are not sports. They are marketplaces. To root for the Yankees or the Red Sox is the functional equivalent of rooting for Microsoft or General Electric. No thanks.

Why do the Red Sox get lumped in with the Yankees? Honestly.

Yankees $201M
Mets $149M
Cubs $135M
Red Sox $120M
Tigers $115M
Angels $115M
Phillies $113M
Astros $102M
Dodgers $100M

The difference between the Red Sox payroll and the Yankees payroll, in Yankee player’s salaries is:

Jeter, A-Rod, Burnett, Sabathia. No biggie, right?

The Yankees have six players in the top 100 salaries in baseball. Boston has zero.

The quote is an old one, so perhaps at the time it was said the payrolls of the BoSox and Yankees were closer.

By centering the quote on one of the great rivalries it gains more rhetorical power. I don’t think it would work as well if he said Yankees and Mets or Mets and Cubs.

Despite the protestations of the BoSox innocense, I think his larger point remains: the absence of a cap system in baseball makes it more of a marketplace than a sport and cheering for the Yankees is like taking a rooting interest in a multinational.

is it just me

or are the leafs doing more of an odd schedule compared to last season? They’re doing more friday and monday games. Wasn’t it usually tues-Thurs-Sat?

THIS IS A JOKE

that’s what i thought. all this talk of “compressed schedules” and it seems to me like the Leafs haven’t played all that much yet…

yeah

they seem to be doing more of these games on tues and friday kind of thing. But maybe it evens out more as the season goes on? (I haven’t checked the schedule for the rest of the season yet)

For some reason they really messed up the beginning, but look at it for the rest of the year:

Nov – 13 games, with 2 back to backs
Dec – 15, 3 btbs
Jan – 15, 5 btbs
Feb – 5, 1 btb (all before Olympics)
Mar – 16, no back to backs, and only 1 two day rest.
Apr – 5, 1 btb. Then playoffs.

61 games before the Olympics (Feb 12th) and then only 21 after them. Last year there were 47 before the All Star game (Jan 24th) and 35 after.

They call me Splodeybones.

Marlies schedule

is even worst…

their schedule for October to the first half of November looks like an NFL schedule, they play one game a week for a month and a half pretty much

This may be heresy, but I wish the Leafs had one or two afternoon home games a year. Be a good chance to get more kids in the building, create a bit more noise and stem all the nonesense about the Leafs not investing/marketing to future fans.

Sunday afternoon games would be awesome.

The Leafs could even market them as “family day” games, and freeze out companies from buying up all the golds somehow…?

wishful thinking

HEH

about the article with the expiring player contracts… I love Poni, I really really do, but does it seem to anyone else that Kulemin is a younger, cheaper version? I mean, I want to keep Poni, but he’s gotta get a raise, and I really think that, on the ice at least (I have no idea if Poni is considered a leader in the room), Kulemin can give us everything he does….

Kulemin has the potential to give us a lot of what Poni provides but he hasn’t done it yet.

well

that’s true, if he had already done it, he’d be making what Poni makes…

in the cap system, it makes more sense to sign Kulemin long term and pay him for potential than resigning Poni.

which would break my heart…

Poni’s cap hit is 2.1 this year, and his salary is 2.5

At what price point is his price too high to keep him?

by JaredFromLondon on Nov 5, 2009 12:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it’s not so much price, as age. if you can get the same player at the same price, but younger, and at a longer term, i’d sign the younger one.

not saying there isn’t room for both, just that if it’s a choice of either/or, I’d take Kulemin
