It was tough to carry on a conversation with the board-stomping and chanting in the background threatening to completely drown out my caller, who happens to be an NHL scout. But through the din of the college arena, one sentence came through clearly over the phone:
"Yeah, this is going to be a good one."
"This" is the 2010 Entry Draft, a talent grab that could go down as one of the best of all-time.
Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated takes an early look at 2010 Draft. You will remember this "Greatest Draft Ever" talk from 1999 which is now known as the worst collection of hockey players ever. Dear God please let it be the latter.

Everything I’ve read so far has suggested a ‘weaker’ draft. Now I’ve read 4 articles suggesting it’s going to be ‘stronger’ in a 24-hour period?
Hmmmmm.
Harder, better, faster, stronger because our work is never over.

He's also our first rounder next year.

nah, Burkie will find a way to replace that one some how, be it another first or a comparable player.
If the leafs are in the bottom 10 this year say goodbye to kabby

Gustavsson is our first next year. And Bozak is our 2nd this year. And Hanson was a bonus.

That will only happen if Ottawa gets the first pick. Only they could screw up something like that.
I hear this Chris Pronger guy is a pretty good defenceman now.

That’s right Kavel, lead the charge! Every lotto pick from 2010 is going to bust!

Hello. :D
I will laugh my ass off if Boston does nab Hall (by their own doing, not through our first rounder), and turns out into an incredulous bust. :)

I’m sure bummed we took Schenn at 5, instead of grabbing a defensive defenceman in the 3rd round when everyone else does it. Oh, and Stefanovich (49 G, 56 GP last year) WHAT A BUST
Dale Mitchell from '07
What a bust that guy was. ;D
And also, “ZOMG DRAFTEING LUC SHENN WAS A MISTAEK, FILATOV IZ BETTER THAN SHENN”

True, but seeing Filatov in Blue and White would be awesome too.

I would've liked Filatov...
but you can’t argue that Schenn was worth that 5th overall pick. :D

I’m not. Just saying Filatov would have been great also.

Every year
around this time, someone comes out and claims best draft since… Godd Till (and others) are right, last year’s draft was a deep draft and the word about the ’10 draft was always reported as it being a weak one…funny how the MSM starts turning the propaganda machine and over hyping crap as being gold.
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
if the leafs were top of the NHL or had their 1st rounder still, it would be a weak draft

Allan Muir is one of the worst hockey journalists around. I gotta imagine you all are only discussing him because you’re bored, because it’s certainly not the thought provoking and insightful analysis that justifies it.

We like to mock idiots around here – Muir is just the latest.
Strangely enough, we never run out of material.

1999
Someone actually made “greatest draft” talk about 1999 at the time? They must’ve been seriously bored, or sarcastic, or both. I remember even the previews from the time were very, “This crop really sucks, but we’ll try to go ahead and talk ourselves into a guy or two, because it’s our job.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
It was some hyperbole but I actually don’t remember reading anything saying that it was going to be the worst draft in NHL history.
