Daly did say the team would not be located in Hamilton because the city's Copps Coliseum "doesn't provide modern-day NHL economics."
There were extensive renovations planned in conjunction with Balsillie's plans to relocate the Coyotes. But, Daly, said, the plans were not clear.
"As far as I know, the money that would take was not coming from any particular source," Daly said. "It was kind of a pie-in-the-sky kind of deal."
A second team in the GTA isn't just an inevitability in the eyes of anyone with a clue but with the NHL as well. Although Hamilton better not be holding it's breath because it won't be in the Hammer. Actually, hold your breath Hamilton we can smell what you had for lunch last week.

Dude, move the Coyotes to Spokane. For some reason there is a huge pocket of Coyote fans here…

You know what, Maybe I am a bit biased but London always seemed like a decent spot for the League.
It is far enough from Toronto/Buffalo/Detroit that it shouldn’t run into any messy territorial rights issues and the population here has shown itself to be hockey mad (see the Knights for an example).
The only pitfall is of course the arena, The John Labatt Center would need a serious size upgrade to get ready, luckily they have an entire half a block in front of the building that is currently be used for parking that they could expand too.

never going to happen
London is both a Maple Leafs and Red Wings stronghold.
The JLC can’t be upgraded by 50-80%.
The population of the area isn’t large enough (maybe ~400,000 at most).
There isn’t enough local corporate sponsorship. (Besides Labbatts and 3M).
by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Nov 9, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes the population directly in London may not be enough but it isn’t like we are that far from other cities.
The corporate sponsorship issue is tricky though although I don’t imagine it would have to be 100% local as again London is not that far from other larger cities.
Really I was mainly thinking about the territorial rights issue and where would be close enough to Southern Ontario without crossing the Leafs and Wings and Sabres.

See I thought that before too, but I am fairly certain I was told ( or read somewhere) that the Kitchener Waterloo Region was considered within the Territorial Rights of the Leafs.
For the life of me I can’t remember where I read that, and I guess with Daly’s latest comments it wouldn’t matter anyhow.

I think Waterloo is ok
NHL Territorial limit is 50 miles. Waterloo is more than 50 miles/80k from hwy 427, which is pretty much the western boundary of T.O.

Yeah but...
Waterloo’s a university town, Laurier U, Waterloo U so you have a fluctuating population of students who may or may not be able to afford NHL ticket prices (and if they’re going to price games like they do in the Sunbelt it would defeat the purpose entirely).
Not to mention population is a major factor. From this site you can see a big correlation between cities with smaller populations and financial troubles. http://www.statshockey.net/nhlcities.html
Of the Canadian cities being “considered” Winnipeg has the biggest population, corporate support is questionable and an it has an arena that can be upgraded. So to me it’s always been Winnipeg as a front runner.

My money is on a second team as close as possible to Toronto’s 50mi/80km boundary. It’s not about the population of the given site – it’s about access to the GTA.
FWIW, Winnipeg does not have the corporate infrastructure to support an NHL team.

That’s always been the biggest factor for them being a viable city for a team.
At the same time teams close enough to be within the 50 M radius don’t have the population to support a team either.
I personally don’t mind having team’s in the USA as long as its cities who actually give a rats a$s about them.
by PassivelyTruculent on Nov 9, 2009 4:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I know countless companies in the GTA that have tickets and suites for the Sabres.
Stick a team on the 401 near Kitchener where the 401 and Hwy 8 meet. It’s about an hour from Toronto and all of 40 minutes from Hamilton. Best of all, no one has to deal with customs/border crossings.

The beginning of that article should read:
NHL Owners eye expansion money franchise in GTA
Toronto (CP) – Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs was seen skipping through the halls of the TD Garden this morning while yelling “CHA-CHING!! CHA-CHING!!!” at all of his employees.
The comments should also include at least 20 instances of the “if Hamilton gets an NHL team, Toronto will want one too” joke.

Triple P!
Really, a halitosis-themed burn against the good people of the Hammer? Just because I had garlic toast for lunch doesn’t mean I have to put up with this.
Anyway, maybe we can organize an oral hygiene clinic (if you feel that’s necessary) for Hamiltonians next weekend at Ivor Wynne when the TICATS ARE BUSY HOSTING A PLAYOFF GAME. And the Argos? Are not.

Don't worry....
The TiCats haven’t won a Grey Cup since 1999…given the size of the league relative to the size of the NHL…that’s really like 40 years. =D

Triple P started it. In the Hammer, they teach you to finish these things.
