Didn’t hear the interview for context, but this sounds like a huge overreaction.

If you’re the general manager of a professional team, and you get asked by the media to comment on a situation like this, you do not chew your guys out in public. I’m one of the least forgiving Toskala critics there is – I sincerely hope he never plays another game in Toronto – and I would have shat a brick if Burke went on the air and said he lost his job already. The public face of the team has to stick up for all of his players.

Vesa will get his time to prove he isnt washed up
probably the next back to back or against a weaker offensive team

Agreed. And publicly lambasting Vesa also doesn’t do Burke any favours in trying to boost the value of his assets. Vesa has negligible trade value right now, but blasting him and publicly saying he’s worthless gives the team no opportunity to potentially recoup some of his value.

If you hear him say it, the quote sounds more like this:

“Vesa’s our starter, we expect him to play 50 games, and if he ever wants to see the net again, he’d better get his act together.”

Every so often, the honesty and candor with which Brian Burke so refreshingly speaks becomes nothing more than hot air.

Really Howard Berger? You’re critiquing other people for spewing hot air?

Really?

it’s been more than 30 years since a freshman goalie stepped into the breach and began rescuing the Leafs

Surely Potvin fits this bill, no?

That goes double for me. How can you forget The Cat?

The Cat didn’t step in and rescue a season that was going south, though. That’s the comparison. He just played well enough that the Leafs could trade away their starter.

Apparently the 1993 playoffs never happened…EVER

With all due respect to the Cat, he was not the reason that team went where it went….

You could argue that about any goalie though…. if we had a worse goalie than Felix we might not have went where we went.

by Shield on Nov 10, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

Not really – I’d say, for example, that Joseph was far more important in his runs than Potvin was in his.

The comparison Berger was making was a goalie coming out of nowhere to save a season that was going into the toilet. The Potvin comparison just isn’t there.

I guess

Though how often does that happen to ANY team?

You need a season that is going south
You need a new freshman goaltender coming in
The new goaltender has to be good enough to single handedly turn the whole season around.

Frankly it’s not surprising it’s been 30 years. For most teams its probably been even longer than that.

Sure – but that’s the comparison he made. If you read the post he references, he says why he doesn’t include Potvin. You can disagree with the rationale, but he does give it.

I don’t think they would’ve gotten there without him. He was just as important as Andreychuk.

Me and Burke

are the same.

Or at least, I think I have the same thought line as Burke. Which is to say, if a guy was capable of being a #1 guy at one point (lets make the assumption that Vessa qualifies), you don’t just run him out of town on rails at the first sign of a heir-apparent. Not only because you don’t want to ruin the guy personally, or ruin his trade value, but also because you want to have him maintain as much confidence as is possible. Because, lets face it, if Jon Gus goes down, Vessa is still a much better option than Joey Mac or whoever the #3 guy is right now.

Maybe as fans we have a hard time taking that point of view, but the fact that most fans are on the same page as Berger right now should speak to how over-the-top that point of view is.

Vessa is our “#1”. We’ll just play Jon Gus for 90% of the games, cause our #2 guy is teh shit.

Brian Burke’s not going to throw Vesa under the bus even if we might.

Unlike Howard Berger who throws guys under his bus so often I wonder how high his auto repair bill is.

Buses are very effective at running people over. I would imagine it’s not too much of a concern for him, thus he does it indiscriminately.
