Leafs Lose. Sun Rises. Water Wet.

  • Are the Leafs infected with Blake-itis (woeful shooting percentages are a symptom) or the victim of the "visiting goalie channels the ghost of Georges Vezina?" Or worse, is it some ghastly combination of the two!?!? Hungry Leafs Fan doesn't know for sure, so he suggest one way to be certain.
  • Jared explains the perils of high hopes and unrealistic expectations.
  • Another Leafs loss? LD knows what you need to turn that frown upside down!
  • Not the greatest ending to the month, but as Steve notes, it's still an improvement over October.
  • Kavel kaptions Mike Komisarek in a komik.
  • MLHS saw some good, and some bad, in the Leafs.  You take them both and there you have the facts of...last nights game.
  • Maybe this will kill that wretched song...?

We’re gonna bounce back. All-out truculence tonight against the Habs. Hopefully the Leafs play an angry physical game.

We'll be fine

I expect a much better game tonight. Back to back games are always tough but I always expect the Leafs to “cowboy up” against the Habs. Especially with Komi back in the lineup.

My recap from last night is now up.

Maple Leaf Gardens Announcement

coming this afternoon:

The federal government will reportedly contribute $20 million to help Loblaws and Ryerson University develop Maple Leaf Gardens as a joint student athletic centre and supermarket. The total cost of the projected plan is $60 million, one-third of which will be absorbed by students, who agreed to an increase in annual fees for a new athletic centre.

Of the 1,015 Canadians surveyed, just under half called the Habs the greatest hockey team in history, while two-thirds agreed the Montreal Canadiens are to hockey what the New York Yankees are to baseball.

Works for me.

Any day now, possibly today, slick center Marc Savard is expected to sign his new contract with the Bruins, a seven-year extension beginning in 2010-11 with an average cap hit in the $4.5 million-$4.8 million range.

Don’t see that happening actually. $4.8 for Savard?

I wouldn’t be that upset if we paid $5 or $5.5 for Savard for seven years.

One of the biggest problems was

The defence has been better, goals against are down a full goal a game, and the players seem to have more confidence. Unfortunately, you can’t teach scoring :(

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Dec 1, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t disagree; my only point is that in the earlygoing, there was a lot of chatter about how Vesa – and Vesa alone – was costing us games. That ignored the reality that our team was struggling to defend, brutal on the penalty kill and suddenly (apparently) almost completely incapable of scoring. There were problems (and blame) enough to go around. Vesa got injured, so did the Monster, we used a couple AHL goalies for a while and predictably stunk even worse, but it has taken improved play from all the players to get us to where we are now.

Unfortunately, as you point out, where we are now is “not talented enough to contend every night”. Fact. The Leafs will lose games like last night’s more frequently than not, because at the critical time, in the critical moment, we have Matt Stajan passing the puck to Kessel’s left foot instead of putting it in a spot where Kessel can tap it home. I’m not trying to harsh on Stajan particularly, it’s not that he’s so terrible, it’s just that the overall level of talent we have on the team is not sufficient to compete. So we all – myself included – have to get used to losing lots of games this year; it’s what happens when your team isn’t that good.

What all this doesn’t mean is that the Leafs should depart from the plan in any way. Stay the course. Endure this season and continue looking to the future – which suggests rather strongly, IMHO, that Bozak, Hanson, Stalberg and especially Kadri ought to stay right where they are and learn how to play professional hockey before we call on them to succeed at the NHL level.

it is going to take a few more years untill we can even think about fighting at the top of the conference, we are going to have many more games like the ones we have seen.

You just know that all the big UFA we want will get locked up and burke will only be able to marginally upgrade the talent level next summer, unless he somehow makes a deal, and if thats the case who knows what he trades away.

We are going to find out how patient brian burke is, he will either continue to build this team the right way and be patient, pick his spots with UFAS over the next 3 or 4 years, continue to draft and stock picks, continue to develop players in the system and not just trade away all the good assets we have for short term fixes.

We are also going to find out just how patient the average fan is, which probably wont be very patient. If people are screaming for wholesale change right now, they will have no hair and a few ulcers by the time 2011 is here.

The hardcores (you guys) will be able to tell if we are on the right path or not.

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"

by Matt_Roberts on Dec 1, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i still have faith that Burke knows how to do his job. I’m not entirely thrilled with the trading of Kubina for Exelby, but if it was done as a means to allow for the signing of guys like Komisarek, Beauchemin, Kessel and Gustavsson, then the sum is greater than it’s parts, so to speak.

If Burke can make a trade, I have no doubt it will be one that makes the team better.

Whether or not that “better” is in the short or long term is the only question.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Dec 1, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The ultimate goal will be for it to be better in both the short term and long term, like acquiring Kessel. He gives us an elite scorer presence now, and at only 22, he should be able to provide that for several years.

Or shooting! The brilliant Bill Shankly once said that if you have the ball (puck) in the penalty area (slot) and you don’t know what to do with it then just put it in the net and we can talk about your options afterwards.

Matty had the right idea though, Miller was blocking him out.

Me and my buddy were joking that he’s so used to the Leaf players having their sticks in their feet instead of being ready to shoot that he’s still not used to feeding Kessel.

Then we got sad when we realizied we were probably right.

by Matt_Roberts on Dec 1, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He did have the right idea – eventually – but it looked to me like he hesitated just for a second (prolly because PPP and Bill Shankly were shouting “SHOOT” in his ear, not incorrectly) and then decided only at the last moment to make the play for the tap-in. It was a good idea, but he seemed to panic a little bit and hurriedly dump the puck half at the far post and half at Kessel rather than making the smooth east-wester that would have allowed Kessel a gimme. FWIW, Kessel seemed a little faked out by it too – I don’t think there was anybody more startled than him to see the puck going towards his front foot.

Shooting is almost never a bad play. I like the pass option better, given the way Miller was playing, but I suppose as a left handed shot, Matty’s angle had to be pretty good too. Obviously, he didn’t have as much time to consider it from every angle as we have; my point is simply that once he decided what he was going to do – he didn’t execute very well, and that’s going to be typical and commonplace for a team with a mediocre talent level.

by Karina on Dec 1, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i think Chemmy proposed that.

I guess it could work. i’m just at a point where I worry about signing someone who will take the spot of guys like Bozak, Hanson Stalberg or even Kadri…

Next year, I’d really like to see Bozak as the #2 center, and move Grabovski to the third line where he can play the irritant role, and still pot some goals. I just don’t see him as the best solution to the scoring woes. Grabbos face off work is miles ahead of where it was last year, and defensively he’s more responsible. Put Blake on his wing and then put Mitchell on the other wing for a bit of size to the line. Let Stajan walk and resign Primeau as the 4th line center.

depending on Poni, Kulemin could play LW with Bozak as the center. If Poni’s resigned he would play LW on the top line, or at least be battling with Stalberg for it. If Poni is traded or allowed to walk (who knows what Burke’s plans are with him) then Stalberg should have first shot at the top LW slot lining up with Kessel on RW (speed+speed) and possibly, depending on his camp, Kadri as the #1 center.

Now, if Poni is resigned, we’re heavy on the LW as Tlusty is still a question mark. I’m leaning towards Burke not resigning him (sad as that may be) because of this fact. Stalberg, Kulemin and Tlusty would be battling for two slots. Since Blake isn’t going anywhere, and Poni isn’t a 4th liner, he’s kind of superfluous.

Stempniak, Mayers and Wallin are all gone the end of the year, one way or another. That gives Hanson a shot at the 2nd line RW slot. With another season under his belt, I’d expect him to be able to grab it. that gives the Leafs a power forward option on that 2nd line, with Bozak playing pivot and one of Kulemin, Tlusty or Poni potting the goals.

that’s a whole lotta ifs and maybes but I’d be curious how a team like that could shake down. The biggest problem is (and it’s a good problem) is the depth at LW and D. If Burke can flip someone for help at center, that puts the onus on Bozak and Kadri to prove their worth.

I have nothing interesting to say.

hah

no worries, I like long posts….
and I agree, Bozak at #2 center, Grabbo down to #3, but who would you propose as #1? Jokinen could fill that void while we give Kadri more time to develop…

"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky

by Karina on Dec 1, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well that's the long and short of it

Burke could use the depth on D and LW to trade for a center. That gives more options than just free agency.

On the flip side, come camp, Kadri might very well be ready. Beyond his lack of upper body strength/bulk, he looked ready at this camp

I have nothing interesting to say.

Question

You’re Brian Burke. What do you do about goaltending next season?

Vesa Toskala is obviously gone.
Joey MacDonald is probably gone too.
Jonas Gustavsson is having an uneven rookie season, and is an RFA.
James Reimer is off to a pretty good start in the AHL (6-1-1, 2.29 GAA (15th in AHL), 0.925% SV (12th in AHL))

How much do you re-sign Monster for?
Where does Reimer play next season?
Who do you sign in the offseason?

Monster gets a 3 year 2.5-3 mil contract (if his play remains the same)
Baring a trade or free agent signing (non apeal to me) Joey Mac gets a couple years at around a mill to back up Gustavsson

you answered your own question
Jonas Gustavsson is having an uneven rookie season, and is an RFA.

I have nothing interesting to say.

Okay, I think I know what you’re trying to say, but you lost me there.

I’m not suggesting we dump gustavsson, but he’s not going to play 82 games next season.

Sorry, what I mean is...

Gustavsson is the starting goalie.

no idea who will be available come July. As you noted, Toskala is gone, but I have no idea on Macdonald one way or the other. whoever the back up goalie is, it will be as inconsequential as whoever our backup goalie is now (Toskala or Joey-Joe-Joe.)

I have nothing interesting to say.

Notable FA Goalies for 2010

Turco
Nabokov
Theodore
Mason
Ellis
Emery
Biron
Hiller
Budaj
Hedberg
Lalime
Auld
Valiquette
Niittymaki.

Valiquette is an interesting option for me. Great team guy, local kid, he’s a veteran who can help Jonas through rough spells, and fuckin LOVES playing at the ACC.

yeah

he’d be a good option. There’s a lot of good options there – I also really like Auld.

I would be VERY shocked if Turco, Nabby and Hiller werent resigned by march.
Emery is playing well and will probably also get inked. Same with Ellis
Biron might be a good 1B goalie,

the rest I have no interest in
