Leafs 6 Caps 3 Final
This game came down to goaltending. Toskala outshined Michael Neuvirth and the Leafs came back from a 2-0 hole to lay a beating on Washington.
Kessel had a goal and two assists, Stajan had two goals and an assist, Lee Stempniak scored a back breaker shortie and Niklas Hagman had a goal but looked dangerous all night. Short recap because I'm about to drink ten beers and celebrate. WOOOOOO FUCKIN HOOOOOOOO. UP NEXT: OTTAWA.

This is year two of him producing like this.

by Pamplemousse on Dec 12, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
That’s a good point. It is also year two of him having first-line ice. I guess what I mean is, is he really our number 1 centre going forward? Or can we trade him at high value to a team that uses him further down the depth chart, and we win the trade because he doesn’t score as much?
by Leaf in Habland on Dec 12, 2009 10:10 PM EST up reply actions
No, he isn’t a bona fide first line centre – even I don’t think he can reach 70 points – but he’s a legitimate number two who’s probably worth more then you can get for him.
Unable to actually speak French since 1980.
by Pamplemousse on Dec 12, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions
That’s the key question: is he worth more than we can get? I don’t know about that. I really like that he’s doing well (like Moore, we went to the same high school) but is it sustainable and what can we get for him? I heard over the summer that Colorado really wanted him. With Duchene, Stastny and O’Reilly, they probably don’t need a young centre anymore.

by LeafFan1989 on Dec 12, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah but it’s risk factor. There are really good players coming out of all rounds. I don’t think a team would give up a first, but certainly, the Leafs should take it if offered.
by Leaf in Habland on Dec 12, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t know. There is a big fall off after 1st rounders. I think the 2nds for Antro and Moore (more so Moore) were steals, if the trade is for a draft pick. If you can get a player, then maybe you can get a little more.
by Leaf in Habland on Dec 12, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions
I’d never trade Stajan….or Poni.
Stajan and Poni are Leafs in my mind….they just can’t exist elsewhere….it’s like having Mats in Vancouver….it just doesn’t computer =(
I hear you. There is a bit of a sense that everyone needs to go. That’s not necessarily true. Most of these guys are young and have a couple more years to improve. The big change that needs to happen is a number one centre, and that might not come through trade or FA, it might come through Kadri. We just might have to wait a bit longer.

Stajan to SJ, SJ 2nd and Couture to TO
or
Stajan to EDM, Riley Nash and a 2nd to TO?
maybe Stajan to CBJ, Filatov to TO?
I have nothing interesting to say.

by Leaf in Habland on Dec 12, 2009 10:24 PM EST up reply actions
SJ
needs proven NHL players. They’re getting close to the end of their rope with all the playoff failures. Stajan, although not a game breaker, gives them a third proven point getter at center, behind Pavelski and Thornton. That said, it’s a little out of their style.
Columbus, from what I’ve read, is thinking playoffs or bust. They’ve been beaten up pretty bad, especially with injuries. Filatov is already gone…
Edmonton was more of a dream. Riley Nash is gonna be purdy good methinks…
I have nothing interesting to say.

Leafs play better against offensive teams. With the lack of defensive pressure, the leafs players get time and space and get the puck in due to working hard. Againstt the stifling defence aka bruins they dont have the high end skill to put the puck in the net.

Globe Recap
Leafs head coach Ron Wilson said after his team’s morning skate that the disruption would not mean anything to the Capitals
"I don’t think it will have any effect," he said. "Sometimes the routine doesn’t mean a damn thing. Players hide behind that. If they go on and have a good game, don’t be surprised if they’re not flying on the morning of games, if they can get to places, the rest of the year."What the episode did, Wilson suggested, was give him some ammunition for the game.
"The only issue for them is that they had to be on the plane, that the plane was down the runway, see stuff coming out of an engine, and its the brief moment of terror that you have that sticks in your mind," Wilson said. "So I will keep saying that over and over again tonight to them: ‘You trust your pilots?’ ‘You trust that airline?’ "
Ron Wilson is a shit-talking madman.

Missed the game, was at a family Christmas gathering (drinking heavily, it’s a coping mechanism).
Got in a cab to come home around 10:30 and my cabbie just wanted to talk about the Leafs. Dude was from Ethiopia and was pumped that the Leafs won. The guy struggled with English (he spoke Amharic) and asked me to confirm the pronunciation of “Kessel”
It’s moments like this that make me love living in Toronto.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
It was an amazing game. Probably one of the best i’ve seen in a while

That’s incredible. I was flying back from the Bahamas and a Japanese guy saw my Red Sox hat and was delighted to find a Red Sox fan to talk about baseball with.

The WIN and a save percentage above .900? Is this real life?
He deserves it – he’s been pretty solid the last few weeks. The change in noise at the ACC in the past few games is insane, and most of it has to do with Toskala coming up with big saves at the right time. Scoring lots of goals is awesome too but they’re useless without the timely saves.
I just watched the highlight reel and it looks like the glove hand is a-ok.

oh, his save percent for the SEASON is still well under .900
But he was .919 for the evening. And, frankly, he is rocking a 1.00 win percent on the night too :) Go Toskala!
The important thing is since his groin thingy in October he’s just slightly under .900.
For games he starts, he’s slightly over .900 I think (since Halloween).
But he’s been even better than that in December… .913 in his four starts.
Vesa’s penchant for allowing backbreaking goals has cut down recently, too. Albeit, he hasn’t cut them out completely at all (Backstrom’s second goal was a prime example) and there is still a lingering doubt with him in net, but you can get the sense that the team is slowly regaining their confidence in Vesa again.

I definitely get that feeling. You could see it in the body language of the player’s and even Vesa himself looked defeated earlier in the season. CONFIDENCE = WINZ. The team has to be at a season high level of confidence, we need to rise up the standings, like we’ve been doing, for the rest of this month.
Obviously there’s no way for knowing for sure, but it has to be inherently difficult for Toskala to regain that lost confidence when he has to convince all his teammates as well. And for good reason, since Vesa was not providing the Leafs any margin for error the last couple of seasons. Of course, confidence may not be a reason for Vesa’s apparent demise, but we’re all speculating why some goalies seem to suddenly lose “it” and get it back (even briefly) all over again.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
I don’t mind the bad goals that much. Bad goals are a part of a the game and goalies are often at fault for goals against. The problem with Vesa in October was that he wasn’t making the big saves that goalies need to make to compensate for their mistakes. Pretty much every good chance was going in and he was letting in softies. That’s a killer combo.
Now he still makes some mistakes, but he’s also coming up big which results in much improved performance (pretty good ones the last 4 starts)…even if we still get annoyed at the 1 or 2 softies he’s let in in those 4. =)
I guess my view is…
I don’t care if Vesa lets in bad goals.
I don’t care if Vesa lets in goals on good plays.
As long as the combined shots that are required for other teams to get those goals result in Vesa being between .905 and .910 (if he exceeds .910 the rest of the year, he’s exceeded my expectations and I’d be very pleased).
Not to be rude, but Vesa letting in all those bad goals has a direct correlation with him not being able to maintain even a sub-.900 save percentage. No teammate would admit this publicly, but it had to be damning to them constantly being down a goal or two right off the bat because of Toskala not making a simple save. Eventually, even if Vesa lets in an unstoppable goal, he’s not going to gather much sympathy or dogged determination back from his teammates.
I want Vesa Toskala to do well. I’m sure everyone does, too, which sounds glib, which is not my intention. I genuinely like the guy and it pains me to see him constantly slagged. But his goaltending has been atrocious for the most part and it’s hard to take any other stance with him when his statistics are the worst amongst all starting goalies. I’m really happy for his improved play, but to be fair, Vesa should have been doing this from the start. Hopefully, the Tosk can continually provide great goaltending from now on.

Vesa’s early season struggles were related more to injury and rust I think.
But…I disagree. You’re treating bad goals and good goals differently. In my view, they’re all the game. Bad goals are easier to stop per se than good goals (and make people angrier for that), but it doesn’t really matter which you let in…a goal is a goal. I could just as easily say that his inability to make great saves has a direct correlation with him not being able to maintain even a .900 SV% early on.
Toskala’s problem, as I stated, was that he wasn’t stopping the good goals or the bad goals….he was letting them all in (likely to due to injury/rust). And letting in bad goals without making corresponding good saves to compensate is a dreadful combination. You can let in a couple of softies but make great saves or you can not make great saves but stop all the softies….but you can’t let softies in and also fail to make great saves. Tosky has reduced the number of softies he’s let in…but he’s also increase the number of good saves he makes (which leads me to believe injury was the primary reason).
I don’t really think players care at all if a particular goal is good or bad. Sure it’s bad for morale, but having your goaltender make a mistake is no worse for morale than letting up a goal on a pretty play. Every player makes mistakes…so it’s more about the overall play of each individual (re: Grant Fuhr). That’s how I felt when I used to play sports anyway. I guess some people see it differently. =)
The ACC was a mausoleum until the Leafs tied it. Fans need to scream their heads off when the Leafs are getting close, help the team build on that momentum.

I just realizied I didn’t notice Komisarek was playing tonight. This is extremely good news for us. He’s at his best when you don’t recognize him.
Komi had a few giveaways tonight, but you’re right, he has been a steady presence now. He’s also starting to unleash his shot from the point. On the flip-side, Ian White didn’t have a strong game, which admittedly, is uncommon for him this season.

Was lucky enough to be there tonight
It was a loud, spirited crowd from the get-go, and surprisingly stayed positive and encouraging after 2-0 and the fluky 3-2 Caps goal.
Granted, it was an exciting game throughout, but the crowd did its part for a change.
Overtime loss: The new black.
wonder how much the engaged crowd
helped them get back into it.
Plausible on the face of it, but of late they do seem to have picked up a bit of the ole’ “never say die” thing even on away games.
I am quite drunk
this score is a very present surprise

I'm not sure you could call Wellwood dancing "dancing"...
since it’s his flab that does most of the dancing for him.

You guys didn’t re-sign him why?
Couldn’t be that he wanted too much money, we got him for a steal(and yes, I felt that as soon as I found out we signed him)
Comparable to the only good JFJ contract ever – re-upping Kabs for that crazy low $ amount

Why didn't we resign him?
We let Haggy go because Hull wanted Sean Avery more. That’s the sad truth.
Go ahead and rub it in :P
