Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Allan Muir once again proves he knows nothing at all about hockey, stating the signing of Finger was the third worst of the decade. Nary a mention of Redden, or Gomez, or Briere, or Drury, or Campbell or anyone else. Nope, Jeff Finger. He is obviously overpaid (by just a million?), but can be quite serviceable. Muir's an asshat.

the 28-year-old defender was the beneficiary of a one-team bidding war that, through no fault of his own, turned his name into a punchline when was awarded a four-year, $14 million contract.
A punch line is the final part of a joke or comedy sketch, usually the word, sentence or exchange of sentences which is intended to be funny and to provoke laughter from listeners. Punch lines generally derive their humor from being unexpected.

Jeff Finger is a punchline? When did that happen? All I can hear people talking, like lordosis said, are the contracts of Gomez, Havlat, Briere, Staal, and Campbell. But Jeff Finger at $3.5 million, really? You could have 2 Jeff Fingers on your team for anyone of the guys above.

Punchline – I don’t think it means what you think it means.

the clincher for Muir is this:
a borderline player who this season has spent almost as much time in the press box as in the lineup./blockquote>

I’d have to agree. $3.5M sitting in the press box most of the time doesn’t look too good. Not a Muir fan, but it’s hard to argue that.

I have nothing interesting to say.

true

But I chalk that one up to Burke signing too many players rather than due to Finger sucking.

yah, Finger was signed to a very different Leaf team

Yup, he was 2nd pairing back when it was Kubina, Kaberle, and Schenn as the top three dmen. With White sporadically up on the wing. Now you throw Komisarek, Beauchemin, and Gunarsson into that mix and it looks bad. But truthfully he was signed with 2nd pairing in mind.

yah, and as a second pairing D, he’d be pretty reasonably priced. I still think he could fill that spot well if the Leafs blue line were weaker

He signed with a different team under a different GM that had a different plan for him.

devil's advocate...

Were Finger that good, would Burke have needed to sign more d-men?

I like Finger. Like what he brings to the team when he plays. That said, $3.5M per sure seems like a whole lot of money when Beauchemin is making $3.8, Kabby at $4.25 and Komi at $4.5…

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Dec 14, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

we could blame it on Fletcher, because quite frankly, I’m not sure what the answer is…

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Dec 14, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Finger isnt THAT good, he would be a servicable 2nd pairing Dman who was probably slotted to play Schenns minuites last year had he not stayed up.

by JaredFromLondon on Dec 14, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Fletcher and/or Wilson had already decided White wasn’t going to be part of the team, so the Finger signing makes some sense.

That said, his emergence as a very capable blueliner in his own right made Finger superfluous. Muir has the benefit of hind sight here, but that’s pretty much the only way you can judge signings like these.

I can think of far worse players to be spending the money on, just saying that now, it’s not that great an idea.

I have nothing interesting to say.

yeah, Finger is pretty much the victim of a numbers game, i still think a team who is ravaged on D and not cap struck would be interested in his services. and there is always a couple around the deadline

Basically

Even though the Finger signing is bad Allan Muir is stupid if he thinks it’s the third worst of the decade.

No Wade Redden in the top five is ridiculous.

If the Leafs went to the Rangers and offered Finger for Redden straight up, Sather would tear his groin sprinting to the fax machine before they changed their mind.
