An Alternate Future: Life without Luke Schenn

Okay, with that horrible loss yesterday (courtesy of Vesa Toskala, I hope he dies in a fire), we can all agree that Vesa should never ever EVER play a single game as a Maple Leaf again. As of now dumb fairweather Leafs fans are now hopping onto the bandwagons of top teams in the NHL. Apparently they don't understand the concept of "going down with the ship" (TWSS to get it out of the way). With that aside, I've wanted to single out a specific group of these tools. Not the Vesa lovers, everyone's given up hope on Vesa (that piece of S**T). Obviously with yesterday's game Pierre Mcguire has been drooling over the Sabres' defenseman Tyler Myers, to an extent that Pierre could care less that Luke Schenn is on the ice. NHL pundits are now going "Tyler Myers for Calder" (even though Tavares will most likely win, and I want a certain swede to win the calder) and saying he was a steal.  For a guy who was ranked highly by scouts, the fact that he dipped all the way down to 12th overall is odd. I won't deny that he's a good player.

Now for the Stupidity: People are already coming to a conclusion that Luke Schenn is a bust. Dumb analysts, stupid fans and soon enough Nick Kypreos will be going "oh he can't score AND play defense like Tyler Myers. He'll never have the same offensive upside Myers has." To put their stupidity in perspective: They're comparing two completely different players. It's like comparing Mike Green and his offensive skill to Robyn Regehr and his shutdown game. Comparing Schenn and Myers is the same thing: Two different defensemen, two different games. Schenn is a shutdown, Myers is a [very] big two-way defenseman. While the common ground is shutting down players, everything else isn't there. Myers isn't a guy who'll throw a big hit. Schenn will. Myers can play on the Powerplay. Schenn's on the ice against the top players. Which will lead me to ask the question (which should never, ever under any circumstances be asked again): What would the Leafs be like if they hadn't drafted Luke Schenn?

Star-divide

If you're wondering, i'm not anti-Schenn, he's a great player. I just wanna give a perspective of what could've happened if the Leafs had drafted someone else instead of Schenn. This means someone aside from Schenn or the top 3 players in the Draft (Stamkos, Doughty and Bogosian), and a notable player who's ranked high in the Draft standings

If the Leafs Drafted Alex Pietrangelo (as in the Blues took someone other than Pietrangelo), the Leafs would've had a solid two way defenseman. However he's not very comfortable playing at the NHL level yet (3 points, -9 and 8 PIMs in 17 NHL GP) and hasn't been great this season (he's a -9 this season).

If the Leafs Drafted Nikita Filatov, The Leafs would've hit the jackpot with a talented player. Also, Ron Wilson might not be as hard on Filatov as Ken Hitchcock was to Filatov. However Filatov might not have liked Ron Wilson's system and if he slipped up he might have wanted out to the KHL.

If the Leafs Drafted Colin Wilson, The Leafs would've had a guy with point-per-game talent, though a groin injury this season has slowed down Wilson (2 points in 10 NHL games, 4 points in 11 AHL games). This one is abit to hard to judge

If the Leafs Drafted Cody Hodgson, they could've had a francise center, though maybe not on the same level that Mats Sundin had reached. He was the OHL's MVP and the CHL player of the Year, as well as the Red Tilson Trophy, the OHL's version of the Lady Byng. However he's missed all of this season with a  back injury and has kept him out for a while, and for all we know he could miss Two years like Steve Sullivan (though Hodgson's injury is nerve related apparently, while Sullivan had a fragmented disc)

If the Leafs Drafted Tyler Myers, they would have Pierre Mcguire's boycrush, a guy who's won and can win (WHL playoff MVP with 20 points). Though how good would Myers look in front of a sieve instead of an Elite Goalie? My sentiments exactly

Now lets compare that to Luke Schenn. He made the team as an 18 year old. The Leafs used him to shut down top players (Heck Evgeni Malkin is still scared of him). He can throw a big hit. He was named to the NHL's All-Rookie team. None of those guys made the team in their Rookie year. A bad sophomore year means nothing. Point being: You can hate on Schenn as much as you want to, but you can't call him a bust after only 1 and a quarter of a season. If after 3 or 4 seasons he doesn't pan out to be a good player, you can call him a bust. In conclusion, the Leafs could (and would) be worse off if they didn't draft Schenn.

And a couple of words for any Leafs fans hopping on another team's bandwagon: YOU'RE NOT A LEAFS FAN

HERE HERE!

by my math OLAS is still a DEMI-GOD, 1 season of domination is hardly irraticated by 30 games of mediocrity. Not to mention “the soph-slump” “offseason training” “minute minding” WHATEVER!

Luke Schenn will be the CAPTAIN of the Toronto Maple Leafs on my watch.

Domination? What player were you watching?

I am a Schenn fan but his game last year was far from that.

HFBoards

they’re bad at this thing. The Post Game Thread for last night’s game degenerated into a discussion of Schenn’s merit to the Leafs.

Thats the point. Too many idiots on the internet lead too too many stupid thoughts. I’m pretty sure all those HFBoards kids are going to Blackhawks, Penguins and Capitals boards

As for Pietrangelo

That -9 is directly the result of a horrible defensive pairing partner that single handedly got beat for like 6 goals.

Schenn has spent most of the year playing with exelby

btw i liked exelby’s clearing attempt yesterday.
do wilson and burke see something i don’t? how are exelby and toskala still playing? if they put back in wallin i will be dumbstruck. i thought the bullshit would end after JFJ and Fletcher left. Fucking bench/ waive toskala/exelby/wallin and try to get rid of the dead weight that is jason blake. i hate when no action is taken whatsoever…so once that self-imposed deadline is over, burke should really take a long hard look at his team and shake things up.

What are your options?

I don’t actually know all the details of your team but if there was simply something better out there you just had to wave at im sure it would have been done. Where are you gonna find a goaly who doesn’t need time to develop and isn’t going to let the same crappy goals through? Same for D.

Blake gets waived some team claims him Leafs have to pay for HALF of Blakes’ salary. Good idea. Add that to Raycroft and Tucker’s buyouts and the Leafs are paying for players NOT on their roster

i wouldn’t waive blake because someone would pick him up on waivers…it would be much better to trade him, but who would take on that hamster’s shitty contract?
i’m fairly certain no one pick up toskala and if someone does, great! that means Joey Mac and Monster can be a winning tandem…unless Joey Mac is subject to re-entry waivers but he shouldn’t since the Leafs can’t play with one goalie. Toskala’s contract is only a year, and let’s face it, no one wants that sack of crap so holding out for a trade is nonsense. Waive that pile of human garbage.
Wallin, Exelby = healthy scratches for the rest of the season.

by Duster on Dec 19, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, lets scratch players and give our team a bad rep. No players will wanna come to Toronto if they know our team is going to bench players if they’re doing badly. Fans may not like Exelby and Wallin, but they’re human too. They have feelings. Being an ass to your players makes other players think “Geez, they were brutal towards someone. If I go there, I could be treated badly despite getting paid”. I’m pretty sure every hockey player thinks less of Brent Sutter (despite him doing a good job with the flames) for mistreating Brian Rolston. Players are people too. But you’re too dumb to understand that. You think Hockey players are just soulless automatons who just play hockey. If you want to be pessimistic, go to HFboards or comment on a Damien Cox article. Otherwise at least stop talking about how you’re correct about everything.

P.S. Did you know there’s a SBN blog for the Rockets?

Easy there with the needless insult

Having said that, good rant and for the most part, I agree with your thoughts about Luke Schenn. Most logical people will understand that at least four years or so has to pass to properly assess any draft. Clearly, some fans don’t have that patience.

As an aside, I wouldn’t want any woman to say, “going down with the ship” to me. That’s not exactly ego-boosting.

certain people acting like Schenn’s rough second season is the end-all-be-all of his NHL career need to calm the heck down for crying out loud. (Not naming any names)

wow space weed so the leafs should reward 1/3 season long (and in some cases longer) mediocrity?
SO are your favourite players exelby, blake, wallin, and toskala? you think you’re taking on some fucking selfless defense of hockey players in general? FUCK YOU! Lest this devolve any further, fuck off space weed, and try not to be such patronizing asshole in the future.

Actually no

If Blake is waived they pay ZERO of his salary.

Upon being recalled the Leafs would have to pay half. Try understanding the rules before making a statement like that.

If the Leafs had remained in the seven spot, they could also have kept their #2 and #3 picks.

Well that’s something I didn’t really factor in. I factored in only if the Leafs stayed at #5 instead of 7.

Yeah, they had to move up to take Schenn and that price seemed high to me. I think Schenn will straighten everything out and be a good player, but I would have been just as happy for the Leafs to take whomever was available at 7 and keep their 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Greg Brady, who personifies confabulation, says the Leafs should have traded the 7th overall pick with the 2nd and 3rd picks in order to move down in the draft to take Myers and Del Zotto.

It’s always nice to have these arguments put forward some 18 months after the draft has passed. I can’t wait for 2012 to hear his take on the best approach to the 2010 draft.

To be fair, I still can’t believe the Leafs didn’t trade up in 2003 in order to draft Sidney Crosby.
