Stajan’s a warrior. As a guy who wins faceoffs and plays a decent defensive game, he came back from that train wreck to help protect Gustavsson’s shutout bid.

Also, someone has to get some more of whatever it was they put in Blake’s water dispenser last night.

Can it before I drive this truculence through your faceulence and put you in an ambulance.

by Brunswick Bruiser on Dec 20, 2009 9:18 AM EST reply actions

Hell yeah

I was really impressed by Stajan, I mean for the record, that was a clean hit, CLEAN. Stajan got caught with his head down and took a good one… it probably looked worst then it actually was due to all the blood but hey, the kid skated himself off the ice, got stitched up and came right back out barely missing a beat, not only that but he gets some real physical play on the boards on his first shift back with lots of pushing and shoving! That’s heart.

Also impressive, the rest of the guys on the ice rallying around Stajan right after the hit, I loved that not only was Komi getting into the action but so was Poni and Kessel! That’s a team jelling right there folks.

P.S. Jason Blake, you see what happens when you aim for the corners instead of the crest on the goalie? Pucks go in!! Please remember to do this more often.

I’m convinced that the only reason Toskalol hasn’t been waived yet (lets face it, trading him is not an option at this point) is because they don’t know if Jonas is both consistent and healthy. I hope he can prove this before the Olympics.

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Dec 20, 2009 10:41 AM EST reply actions

And Toskala solves that problem how?

It’s more likely that the Leafs don’t need the cap space and don’t want to give Toskala to another team.

I honestly thought (foolishly perhaps) that if Toskala maintained is hot(ish) play he might have moderate value at the trade deadline. I would have been thrilled if the Leafs could move him for a 3rd or a 4th pick to a team that needed to shore-up their goaltending for the playoffs.

With his meltdown in Beantown a trade for the Vesa is not going to happen.

I wonder if Toskala is more likely to hit the waiver wire in the New Year. Burke seems to be a very loyal guy and it’s easier to gas someone once the holidays are over (who wants to waive a guy five days before Christmas?). Waiting until January also gives MLSE a bit more time to sort out their goalie situation in the minors as Reimer should be back from the IR by then. The Leafs can run Gustavsson/MacDonald, the Marlies can run Engelage and Reimer and Toskala can go run a man purse retail empire in Finland.

Burkie is on record saying he won’t make any moves during the holidays for obvious reasons.

Also, Toskala really can’t be moved, and I don’t think waiving him would do any good. Is Joey Mac more reliable than Toskala if Jonas goes down? Not really that much :/

by unavoidable on Dec 20, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

he sure hasn’t let in horrible goals as consistently as Toskala.

I’d take Joey Mac over the Vesa. In addition to a working glove hand, it saves the club about $3M in cap space.

Vesa

maybe seems better when he’s not playing too frequently. His melt-downs have tended to come after a string of games, and his best years of goaltending were as a platoon, right?

To be fair...

Toskala doesn’t let shitty goals in consistently. He does it in bunches.

Terrible, horrifying, ghastly bunches.

Why do we do this to ourselves?

by Karina on Dec 20, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Had Toskala maintained the play he showed during the Leafs win streak, I thought Vancouver or Detroit might slip the Leafs a late pick for Toskala at the deadline.

If you’re Gillis do you want to roll the dice on Raycroft if Luongo goes down? Howard and Osgood have been dreadful in Detroit.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Dec 20, 2009 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

If you’re Gillis do you think Tosk is an upgrade on Raycroft? Cause that hasn’t really worked out so well on this end either…

The Leafs need to play him less. 6 games in a row is too much. Now that the injury situation seems to have sorted itself out, they need to go Jonas for 2-3 games, and then Tosk for 1-2. That’ll keep things right. Toskala plays well when he is given a lighter load.

by Leaf in Habland on Dec 20, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Can you imagine your team in a one game playoff and you have to pick between Toskala and Raycroft as your starter?

Lots of grit to this one.

We were lucky to have survived our shitty defensive play in the first, and then we finally stood up to the Bruins in our end and on the forecheck. In a way, the rhythm of this game was really reminiscent of our win against Washington. We started out terribly, but then battled like crazy, and very slowly turned the momentum of the game around. By the end, the Leafs looked in control of the game, drawing penalties, not shitting their pants around Chara, and not giving the puck up the middle of our zone.

by JP Nikota on Dec 20, 2009 11:12 AM EST reply actions

Great Game Last Night

It was only one game but I’m confident The Monster will prove he’s healthy once and for all in the coming weeks. I just don’t see how Toskala is going to survive past New Year’s Eve unless no one wants his contract and MLSE won’t swallow a couple of million dollars.

Stajan was all heart last night and I loved how the Leafs stuck up for him after that big hit he took from Boychuck. Was it legal? I’d say it was borderline at best. He appeared to launch himself into the hit and Stajan’s face met Boychuck’s shoulder pad.

The only thing I didn’t like about last night’s broadcast was Criag Simpson making excuses for the Bruins. “They don’t have Lucic”. “They are tired from playing the previous night.” Whatever. You don’t see us complaining because we don’t have Mike Van Ryn on our power play.

Not to be pedantic

but based purely on the stats so far this season… they’re not entirely wrong.

Crosby + Malkin = 32 G + 45 A = 77 P, and the two of them are +14 and +13 respectively.

Sedin + Kesler = 24 G + 51 A = 75 P, and the two of them are +10 and 0 respectively… but Kesler is playing against the other team’s top centres as a defensive checker also, while Pittsburgh has Jordan Staal to handle that side of things.

See the key difference is Pittsburgh’s 3rd centre is Staal, while Vancouver’s 3rd centre is …Kyle Wellwood?

That’s the difference between a Stanley Cup and being a pretty good Western Conference team.

Of course I should mention

that Malkin has only played 29 games… so he’s 6 short of the other 3 players mentioned…. but yeah… as #1/#2 punches go so far this year, Sedin and Kesler are probably amongst the top 3 or 4 in the NHL.

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

by Steve Burtch on Dec 20, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

How's this for scary

Other potential candidates for this discussion would include the following:

FLA: Horton + Weiss = 28 G + 40 A = 68 P and +7 and 0 respectively.

SJS: Thornton + Marleau = 30 G + 55 A = 85 P and +9 and +12 respectively… of course Marleau doesn’t play Centre all the time… but they might be superior… minus the whole playoff thing.

TB: Stamkos + Lecavalier = 28 G + 36 A = 64 P and -4 and 0 respectively… ok not so much.

PHI: Richards + Carter = 26 G + 28 A = 54 P and +4 and -4 respectively… not so much respect though.

TOR: Stajan + Grabovski = 18 G + 33 A = 51 P and -1 and 0 respectively… of course the NHL also lists Kessel as a centre… so that’s kinda weird. Obviously he’s not included.

WSH: Backstrom + Laich = 22 G + 44 A = 66 P and +12 and +3 respectively.

Ok so If we go with San Jose and Pittsburgh as the clear cut top two… who else do you throw out there other than Sedin and Kesler?

The part I like is Nathan Horton

if the Leafs had a top duo of him and Grabovski then our numbers would look like this:

18G + 40A = 58P. That’s 7 EXTRA POINTS, and the same number of goals… so obviously Horton is superior to Stajan… just saying.
