When Brian Burke took over as the General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he promised a rebuild that would return the franchise back to it's glory days. Burke was the ultimate salesman, doing his best to convince fans and the hockey world that he had what it took to immediately turn around what had become a laughing-stock of a franchise.
Three months in, mission not accomplished. Not anywhere close.

Find me a GM in the league that can turn an almost lottery team to a serious juggernaut at the drop of a hat. Come on do it.
The other thing is...
That since “The Start” the team is a massively improved team. Over the past month they’ve played .600+ hockey. They are beating good teams, they are scoring more, they are defending much better, and if Gustavsson had not had two fucking ablations they’d be that much better.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Exactly.
It really bothers me to see articles like this where people claim that Burke promised that we would be some kind of juggernaut in the east this season. He never said anything of the sort.
The closest he ever came was saying that his target this year was to make the playoffs, he didn’t guarantee the playoffs, he just said that was his target. I swear the media will spin ANYTHING they get that is related to the Leafs in some way to make it out to be a failure. If and when the Leafs are a serious contender in the east I guarantee you they still will get no respect from the media.
Did Burkie promise anything for this season really? He said something about maybe having a playoff team, but every GM says they have a playoff team. Most say they think they can win the cup.

Seriously?
What the hell, does he think Burke is a miracle worker or something?
People who don’t follow the Leafs closely saw the early awful start and concluded that the team is a joke again and Burke is a failure. But people who know what’s going on see that the team has turned it around and has more of a bright future than it’s had in years.
Can people at least wait a little longer than three fucking months into his first full season with the team before we can pass judgement on the Burke era?

Head over to the original page and let Brandon have it. :)
Met him at the draft, really nice guy, but way off. Remind him by how much!
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Aside from the Fact that he gave props to Marty, why is Burke on the naughty list? Did Burke dismantle his team and turn it into a farce on the ice? Did he trade away top prospects for late draft picks? Did he try to make the world’s smallest team? Too many haters these days

Compare this
to a failing business that hires a new CEO to right the ship.
Does anyone expect that guy to turn a profit within 3 months? Within a year? Doubtful.
New Business strategies, cost-cutting, rebranding, those kind of things take time before profits start to emerge. So does developing talent, team chemistry, getting rid of bad habits before wins start to happen.
I know this analogy isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty close.
I fear us Leaf fans are the most impatient team in the sport.

You have Brian Burke on the naughty list: A GM who tookover for a terrible team midway through the season and has had only1 draft and 1 free agency to work with to rebuild a basement team that is now, one of the worst starts in history, sitting 5 points out of a playoff spot.
You should have put Paul Holmgren at the Flyers on the naughty list instead. Paul Holmgren started with a team that finished 5th in the East last year; had a breakout superstar in Jeff Carter; and had a stacked roster with Richards, Briere, Gagne, and Hartnell. Then he added rookie standout James van Reimsdyk, sophomore star Claude Giroux, and one of the best defensemen of all-time in Chris Pronger. Mix that winning formula together and you get a 15-18-2 record good for 14th in the East and 29th overall, and a fired coach.
How does Holmgren not get a lump of coal in his stocking this year?
They call me Splodeybones.
Philly
is failing all over the place. Their only blatent hole is their goaltending – but yet they aren’t scoring.
I’ve heard the bad lockerroom drama rumours, but c’mon if its THIS big of a problem maybe its time to start in with the trades. Way too much talent on that team to be this bad.

Brian Burke = Barack Obama
You can blame him all you want for what he hasn’t ‘accomplished’, but he inherited a terrible situation. Things are going to look bad for a little while. Even when he said things might get better.

I don't approve of that comparison
Due to my personal political beliefs. But I am not going to argue with you as I do not wish to start a stupid politics argument on my favourite hockey blog.
Really?
I’m not sure how you can argue with that statement? It’s fairly a-political. Unless you think all of the US’s problems are currently attributable to his 11.5 month tenure?

Very Apt actually: consider
Brian Burke – comes in to run a franchise that’s in a mess and has been in one for years.
Barack Obama – comes in to run a country that’s in a mess and has been in one for years.
Brian Burke – Heralded by majority of Leafs fans as going to (at some point) turn the mess around.
Barack Obama – Heralded by majority of Americans as going to (at some point) turn the mess around.
Brian Burke – believed by the lesser informed to be capable of performing a miraculous reversal of the fortunes of his franchise.
Barack Obama – believed by the lesser informed to be capable of performing miraculous reversal of the fortunes of his country.
Brian Burke – won unofficial (and undeserved) GM of the Year award by fans.
Barack Obama – won official (and undeserved) Nobel Peace Prize – awarded by someone in Sweden.
OK, OK, maybe the last one is pushing it a bit – but I think my point is made.

I don’t really want to go down that road.
i think it’s a really good comparison man. regardless if you think the mess burke/obama inheirited was due to their predecessor, or if you think there was a mess at all, popular opinion at least was that the new guys in charge were going to change things, for the better, drastically and quickly. nothing political or controversial about that.

My favourite part
“Three months in.”
Yeah, TONs of GMs turn teams around in 3 months, it might just be the easiest thing in the world. You know who could turn this team around in 3 months? JOHN FERGUSON JR! Rehire JFJ!

It’s fun how little pieces like this are self-propagating. The “Brian Burke takes over Leafs, wants to make the playoffs, add toughness” headlines combined with the Leafs off-season moves had lots of people writing articles about what a great job he’d done remodeling the team before the puck even dropped.
Now the vagaries of the NHL season and future predictions have hit. Those that overreacted in a positive fashion are now backpedaling in order to save face, while the skeptics or silent types out there are condemning the team to be topical or contrary, for expectations that were not even shared by the organization.
The fact is that, once the quotes and buzzwords that blew out of proportion are skimmed off, the Leafs’ story up until the season started was “Newly hired GM hopes to improve mediocre team.” What a groundbreaking idea. But I suppose without bluster and hyperbole the guys making these lists might actually have to form some opinions of their own.

Mainstream media types all expect the Leafs “rebuild” to be instantaneous or at worst, quick, otherwise it can’t possibly work. They’re like little kids on a long trip that say “Are we there yet?” every 5 seconds.
No, we are not there yet! But we are on our way. Until then, quiet down back there and stop hitting your brother/sister.

I'm Curious
which of Burke’s moves does he disapprove of?
Trade for Kessel? 13 goals in 25 games? Yeah horrible.
Signing Grabovski for 3 years at $2.9 million a season? On pace for 51 points? Not bad considering he had 48 points last year. Could be better though.
Bringing in Hanson and Bozak to increase team depth?
Signing Gunnarsson, Stålberg, and Mikus to pro deals with the Leafs?
Trading Antropov and Moore for draft picks… NOT increasing his offer to Moore?
Signing Gustavsson to give the Leafs a legit goaltending prospect not named Pogge?
Letting Pogge walk as a free agent?
Signing Komisarek and Beauchemin?
Which of those was a mistake so far? Which one is a “failure”? Any of them? None of them? Some of them? I think I’d go with the 2nd choice, but maybe that’s just me.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
MAYBE
it would be the Tlusty trade, which is the first move I disagree with sincerely as far as Burke’s tenure has gone. I am of the opinion Tlusty will develop into a better NHL’er than Paradis, but we shall all have to wait and see on that one.
I still don’t think that warrants being ripped after 1 year on the job.

Actually, we got a conditional 2011 pick out of Pogge. A low one, but usually goaltenders get picked up with low picks.
Also, I would call the trade of Kubina for spare parts Exelby to be a pretty bad trade. It was a salary dump, yes, but to not even get a low draft pick out of a solid 1st pairing guy and the anchor for our PP last year is rough.
Ya the Kubina one could definitely be seen as a bad trade (ie salary dump), but when you evaluate the whole purpose (i.e. to get enough room to sign beauchemin), it’s still up in the air. As of right now, I kind of wish we had Kubina as he has the better shot, but we’ll have to see how Beauch ends up turning out in the long-run, he’s played pretty well smothering other team’s star players as of late, but im not sold on his consistency yet.
XLB is obviously dead weight and will not be re-signed.
Some people are also still upset about the Strahlman trade too.
