Ian White is Moustachulent, Blake Wheeler Should Be Suspended, and Hockey Night in Canada Hates Us

Glove tap to Belligerent Burkie for finding the incident in question

This has nothing to with this post other than I love posting Ian White kicking ass
The Man, The Myth, The Moustache

17. Bill McCreary apologized to Ian White for missing Blake Wheeler’s push from behind that sent White hard into boards. White said after the game, "I was lucky." Obviously, you’d love McCreary to see it and call it live, but good on him for manning up.

- Elliotte Friedman, 30 Thoughts

How long r we going to treat refs like they're above the law, above being questioned by the media? It's an outdated concept that needs 2 die

- Jason Whitlock, Twitter

Those two tweets, the latter re-tweeted by yours truly, were enough to sitr me from my blogging slumber. As usual, my muse Godd Till, was on gchat immediately to kick-start the creative process:

Till: AH YES, BECAUSE THE STANDARD OF OFFICIATING WOULD CERTAINLY BE IMPROVED BY SUSTAINED, INTELLIGENT CRITICISM BY THE HOWARD BERGERS OF THE WORLD

PPP: Not from the dumbasses of the world but the refs should have to answer for why they screwed up like with that White hit.

Till: UH HUH. 'REPLAYS SHOW THAT I WAS BLOCKED OUT ON THE PLAY' Remember that? Can't wait for more of that standard of ass-covering. This should be great.

Star-divide

Obviously, the fact that Bill McCreary missed the hit is mind-blowing. I won't beat around the bush, Ian White is bang on: he is very lucky. If he had been hit a half a stride or so sooner he could have woken up Sunday with a halo and paralysed from the waist or neck down. Blake Wheeler laid an absolutely filthy hit and the fact that he isn't suspended and that there was no call on the ice highlights the massive trouble the league faces in trying to cut dirty play out of the game.

The more upsetting part was that Blake Wheeler didn't stand up to Colton Orr when it came time to pay the piper. Normally, non-fighters obviously don't have to fight enforcers but 'The Code' is supposed to keep players from making those kinds of hits because they'll have to fight the Colton Orrs of the world. Instead, we saw Wheeler pull his best Claude Lemieux impression while the Bruins were rewarded with a powerplay. Of course, I don't want Orr to pull a Carcillo but is it to much to ask that Blake Wheeler man up? And if he won't, would it kill the league to dish out some punishment? I guess so.

There was obviously a lot of ugly things in a broadcast that features the Leafs losing 7-2 in Phil Kessel's first trip back to Boston but one we could both agree on was that Mike Milbury's presence was the straw that broke the camel's back. How bad was it? Godd Till actually wrote a post about how it made him realise Pierre McGuire's genius. Put aside the fact that the very idea of having him present his opinions on anything related to the NHL is laughable.

Till: And what the fuck was with having Mike Milbury in the booth? That POS defended Wheeler on that play.

PPP: WASN'T THAT PAINFUL?

Till: Fuck, Hughson and Simpson are bad enough but that addition was so fucking bad.

PPP: Yeah, it was disgusting.

Till: Hmm, let's put a grating loudmouth Bruins homer in the booth.

PPP: Yeah, this is genius. Ok, next we're going to put a West Coaster with an inferiority complex about Toronto.

Till: Check!

PPP: And some twit that didn't want to play in Toronto because he was a pussy.

Till: GREATTTTT IDEA!

PPP: This is going to be awesome
/scribbles HNiC script

Till: THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS ARE PROUD TO SELECT, FROM SASKATOON OF THE WHL, D WENDEL CLARK! FUCK YOU SIMPSON!

PPP: THEN FUCKING BENEDICT CHERRY WEARS A FUCKING BROOONS TIE!

Thanks to a quirk in the schedule the Maple Leafs are back in Boston on Thursday night for a rematch. This is probably a great thing for Phil Kessel in terms of facing a pressure-packed environment. It also lets the Leafs work on the things that killed them on Saturday night: their lack of attention to detail, their lack of offensive desire, and their lack of passion. The one advantage they have is that the Bruins won't be getting shellacked by the Habs Wednesday night because anyone that watched Friday's 100th anniversary game knew what was going to happen:

The Bruins are going to be flying tomorrow night. Freaking bums

Mad Mike had it wrong. It’s people like him who may be responsible for the “pansification” of hockey. I don’t understand why he stood up for Wheeler, but hey. This is the same guy who beat up a Rangers fan at MSG with his own penny loafers thirty years ago.

I liked how on the Hotstove last Saturday he was ripping into Shanahan for getting that NHL job so quickly, saying “there are so many out-of-work GMs that would have been perfect for the position”

Then someone called him out (can’t remember who) saying:
1. That he was jealous because he didn’t get the job
2. There’s a reason why those GMs don’t have jobs

Milbury gets under my skin, but it’s nice to see the guys stick it too him every 2nd intermission

What's up with Grabovski?

I’ve been watching the highlights from the Boston and Atlanta games and in both Grabo got himself a breakaway, and both times he missed wide left (either that or the goalie got the tiniest piece of the puck and sent it wide left).

So does Grabo have no moves (or only 1 move)? Or is he completely snake-bitten right now?

by Belligerent Burkie on Dec 8, 2009 10:17 AM EST reply actions

So Grabbo is 0 for 2 on recent breakaways. Lots of talented guys have worse numbers in the shootout. I’d imagine by the end of the year he’ll have cashed in a couple of breakaways and it will even out.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...

by mf37 on Dec 8, 2009 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

against atlanta, the puck hopped and rolled a bit at the end and he put it (just) wide, but the move worked and he had the whole top of the net to put it in
i dont remember the one against boston, but grabbo has never stood out as a break away talent, i dont think he has ever been thrown in the shoot out, there is probably a reason behind that

Playing devil's advocate

Lost in all this outrage is the blatant high stick Komisarek gave Chara.

An inch or so higher, and the big Z could be wearing an eye patch and out of hockey.

It’s a fast game, things get missed. It was a scary situation with White. I didn’t think Wheeler “hit” him so much as nudged him. Where the play was, made that decision a very, very bad one. Blake is fortunate things didn’t turn out worse. Even more fortunate is White.

The point of the two refs was to minimize instances of missed calls. Has it worked? I have no idea. That said, it is incredibly rare that a missed call is owned up to by an official, and I give McCreary full marks for taking responsibility for it. I’d say that’s a pretty classy guy.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Dec 8, 2009 10:26 AM EST reply actions

the highstick was faaaaaaaaaaaaaar less easy to catch than the hit from behind, not to mention how having your stick deflect up another stick into a player is a lot more forgiving a mistake than even nudging a speeding player from behind into the endboards

Puns, Innuendo and Bad Spelling, Yes We Got That

by JaredFromLondon on Dec 8, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

yes

but it was missed and the potential for a career ending injury existed. of course, the flip side is the visor argument.

my point being that calls get missed a lot. Has implementing two refs on the ice helped stem that?

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Dec 8, 2009 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

No, it clearly hasn’t. If you ask me, they just seem to get in the way of the play more frequently.

The thing that confounds me is how, with two refs and two linesmen on the ice, and only two players in one end of the rink, CHASING THE PUCK, all four of the little blind mice could possibly miss Wheeler’s hit from behind. You’re correct to point out the missed call on Komi, but plays like that – bang bang at the line, in the middle of the hurly burly – can and do get missed. I am at a loss, though, to know what all four officials could possibly have been watching in the case of the Wheeler/White incident that would have distracted them from observing that foul.

One doesn’t preclude getting upset about the other though.

Just because it wasn’t a bodycheck doesn’t mean it wasn’t dirty. When Al McInnis got wishboned on an icing and broke tonnes of things he wasn’t bodychecked either. He just got speared in the back.

Missing a high stick on a play that had already moved on is different than missing Wheeler’s hit which was where the refs’ attention should have been focused for at least a 3 count.

by blurr1974 on Dec 8, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

It's semantics

There’s no nudging from behind penalty and that word, in my mind, underplays the intent of what he did as you can tell by the outstretched arms on the push. Nudge sounds accidental.

Thoughts from Atlanta game

Toskala was very good in the 1st, great in the 2nd and pedestrian in the 3rd. Toskala did everything he needed to do to keep Atlanta at bay those first 2 periods. I will give PPP this though; had the Leafs not scored 5(!) goals in the second, he may have cost them the game. But the Leafs scored 5 in the second and he didn’t cost them the game.
If the Leafs can play half as well in every period as they did in the the second, it will lead to PLAYOFFS!!!!1
It was great to see the Leafs score so many goals off of rebounds. That tells me that more and more players are shooting away from the chest of the goalie (ahem blake) and towards the corners and off of the goalie’s pads when on a bad angle, creating more rebound opportunities and more chances to shoot with the goalie out of the net.

Now, let’s just hope they can do that against Boston and not have another 7-2 beatdown (unless it’s 7-2 us of course).

by Belligerent Burkie on Dec 8, 2009 10:29 AM EST reply actions

OK, pedestrian may be a bit of a stretch for the 3rd.

ill let the little goal slide because that was a pretty good pump fake and toskala had to decide in a split second if he needed to move to cover the far side. great move by little to get vesa moving
the second goal though….ugh

Goals can be reviewed

I’ve never understood why penalties couldn’t be. Here’s a simple proposal.

Coaches get one penalty challenge a period, which can be used to dispute a called penalty or dispute a non-call. If it turn out the coach was right the penalty is overturned/called. If the coach is wrong there’s some sort of penalty i.e. minor becomes a double minor or a major, or the team goes down two men.

Seeing as it seems way easier for the cameras to catch penalties as opposed to a questionable goal, you can put a time limit of two minutes on a review or something to make sure the game doesn’t slow down too much.

I can hear the people complaining about time wasting already but when you see Ian White get four minutes because a Hurricane high-sticked another Hurricane you start thinking that there must be a way to cut down on human error.

by David Danforth on Dec 8, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think there would be a way to handle it efficiently, especially if there was a penalty for using a challenge and losing. Coaches would have to be really, really sure they’d win, because there’s no way they’d want to be the ones to put their team in a hole.

A Letter from Boston.

Here in Massholia we are proud of our Masshole status so it doesn’t really phase us when it’s used as an attempt to insult us. It just means we’ve succeeded in ticking you off. WIN! :P :D

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way I’d like to say something about Saturdays game.
First I’m sorry for your loss but the Bruins needed to get the first game and hold Kessel pointless. Losing to the Habs so badly the night before fueled that fire too.

In Boston, we’re used to being infested by loud mouth Habs fans and we get our fair share of Rangers, Sabres and Flyers fans. (Sabres fans are the worst IMHO). Saturday we got a large flux of folks from your fair city and I must admit I was impressed. Every single one of you I met was cool. No one was obnoxious. I saw no fights. If you were there and any B’s fans treated you badly I apologize. Every city has it’s jerks. There was even a Leafs fan who was totally hammered who bought tons of Bruins gear and handed it out to the fans and children. Who does that?!?! So thank you for being cool. See

Travelling Leafs fans are credits to the club.

For the record, I’ve also never had a problem with visiting fans in Toronto and I’ve been to a lot of contentious games. I think those kinds of things tend to get overblown.

This is PPP's work account until further notice. Damn Internet.

by David Danforth on Dec 8, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

True

One bad fan can ruin an experience for you. I can say that 4000 Habs fans were better behaved than a couple hundred Sabres fans in our building. Go figure.

I’ve never had a problem with Sabres fans. Probably because the only time I saw a buffalo fan get kicked out I was actually having a pretty good conversation with his buddy.

I was at the game decked out in my Leaf’s garb and my brain full of alcohol laced blood.

I’d say for the most part the Boston fans were really cool. There was a group behind us who were pretty malicious with their taunting. When I go to road arena’s, I cheer for my team. I don’t taunt the other. :)

I’d love to go back to Boston for another game. It was great.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, some of the guys are really bad. We try to squash them or heckle when they get out of hand. You didn’t happen to be stuck in the section with the annoying U.S.A. chant did you? That is downright embarrassing.

I don’t remember the name of the place… it was near anna’s taqueria… hills tavern or something… I can’t remember. I was pretty much done when they went in. I just walked back to the hotel.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Just read this correctly…

Before the game we got pre-buzzed in our hotel. In the afternoon we did the fenway tour and ate lunch at Uno.

A buddy of mine sits in 319 every game. It’s not so bad. I work the 50/50 Raffle so I don’t get to see much of the games but at least I’m in the building. When we break down I go sit up on 9 near Timmy.

No biggie :)

We have our regulars who play and when a Canadian team is in town the pot gets pretty big. Not winning can be a discouragement though. Someone from Toronto won the pot Saturday night so all was not lost for them. :)

We sang both anthems at the top of our lungs.

My buddy was sitting a few seats over from me wearing a St. Pats jersey. It was pretty sweet.

Pretty similar weather to new england.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

No? I have to admit I’ve only been to Montreal but when I think of Canada I think of the years I lived in Alaska and imagine it’s cold like that. Clearly I am mistaken.

*WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*

by Krispy73 on Dec 8, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Not even close. :)

alaska is way the f—- up there.

It gets crazy hot in the summer, 90+ with bad humidity, and crazy cold in the winter, -30 at the worst times. But neither of those last for more than a month or so.

It’s pretty great weather all said and done.

Plus, I can jump in front a SUV going 70 and not have to worry about medical bills. It’s a good luxury to have since our beer is so much better.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

our beer is so much better.

It’s not my fault you preferred to pick up a 15 dollar bottle of liquor instead of sampling some actual good beer.

by Clawson on Dec 8, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I actually enjoyed the Sam Adams I had. It was pretty good.

I got the rum because I much prefer getting drunk on liquor rather than beer. and it was way cheaper than drinking arena beer en masse.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

True enough. Sam Adams is our good-enough mass-produced beer. If you have microbrewery beer it’s even better, though.

We went to the Beer works near fenway, and I had a Hub light. The 7 of us all tried to order something different.

It was pretty good too. Tasted a lot like our version of Coors light.

The stuff the other guys got, not so good.

It was pretty bad. A few of the guys in our group were real close to starting something. It’s a good thing they are very calm and reserved people. If they had any sort of temper, I’m sure there would have been a fight. Those bruin fans were being very very belligerent with the taunts. Besides that small group, I have no complaints.

by RepressedOptimism on Dec 8, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

I, personally, was buzzing enough that I completely ignore them and concentrated on heckling my own team.

It must have pissed them off swearing at the back of my jersey for 2.5 hours without getting any response from me.

I didn’t get to see that Carolina game…but wow…what a nice hit. And Erik Cole absolutely embarrassed himself, first by wanting to fight after a legal hip check, and then by not even landing a punch and getting his ass beat down.
