Sundin's return to the ACC leaves this Canucks fan somewhat torn
Editor's Note: Did you know that SBN finally has a Canucks' blog? Well, now you do and here's one of the fine gentlemen from that establishment and he's sharing a very big secret: he's a traitor. Just kidding. I mean, it's not a secret if you've read his previous site Hockey Madness. Here he is with a preview of tonight's game.
I write for Nucks Misconduct, a relatively new Canucks site here at SBN, and I need to get something off of my chest. I've lived in British Columbia for my whole 35 year-old life. From the age of 3 up until about 2 years ago I was an unwavering Leafs fan. My father got me into hockey, as we watched Borje Salming and the Leafs on Saturdays. Sure, I knew about the Canucks and followed them, but being exposed to more Leafs games made me a fan.
I still watch Leafs games today, but finally became a serious Canucks fan when Alain Vigneault and Roberto Luongo arrived. That's when I started writing about the team and following them religiously.
So call me a traitor or turncoat, I don't care. Shit happens. People can change loyalties.
I'm not going to direct any ill comments towards Mats Sundin in this pregame post. There's already enough of that going around. I have been a Sundin fan since 1994, and he's been one of my favorite players since then. I have had the priveledge of watching him play all those years for the Leafs, and now with the Canucks.
Do I care if Leafs fans boo Mats when he makes what could be his last appearance as a player at the ACC? No, not really. I think he deserves some respect for his tenure there, but I believe it was PPP who said, basically that it's too early. Leaf players seem to disagree.
"I think there's only one way that you can (greet his return) – applaud the guy," said Jason Blake. "For what he's done for this organization, what he's done for the city of Toronto."
Added Matt Stajan: "He deserves a standing ovation. A long one."
The cheers from respect will come down the road because Leafs fans are still licking their wounds on the whole Sundin saga. Now he enters Toronto in a blue uniform that has a whale on it, for a team whose fans-for the most part-detest all things Toronto. I'm sure the feeling is mutual.
Mats can expect a mixed reaction, and I think he does. It's the media that turns this occasion into a shit show.
It seems as though most Leaf fans just want to get this game over with. Others want to see the Leafs make Mats and co. pay by defeating them. Some will cheer and respect Sundin, as they understand what he went through in the last stages of his career in Toronto.
Canucks fans want the win because of the tight Western Conference race...and of course to gloat at the hated Leafs and their fans.
To me, the most important part of this game isn't about the fans' reactions. It's about how the Canucks play against Mat's former team. I want the 8th win in 9 games. I want the 7 point spread between us and the 9th place Ducks. I want Sundin, who only has 2 assists in his last 5 games, to come out and destroy the Leafs in front of the emotional crowd and get his game going again. The rest of this hooplah be damned.
A win will bring me joy. I'll get drunk in the aftermath of victory. But I won't gloat too loudly. It wasn't that long ago that I cheered for the Leafs with a captain named Sundin.
As a side note...
I find it amazing how recently wins by both the Leafs and Canucks have caused crazy reaction and changes to the losing teams involved.
-One week ago, the Leafs erased a 2 goal deficit to destroy the Penguins. Pens coach Michel Therrien was then fired.
-The Canucks spanked the Habs last Sunday, and Alex Kovalev was then sent home.
-The Canucks had an easy time with the Senators on Thursday, and today the Sens acquire Mike Comrie and Chris Campoli.
VIDEO LINKS: CANUCKS VS LEAFS BLASTS FROM THE PAST
- 2 Leafs victories over the Canucks in 2001 and 2002, both games at GM Place
-Canucks destroy the Leafs 6-1 at the ACC in 2007.
-Hits from the 1994 Leafs-Canucks semi-finals series.
-Leafs end Luongo's shutout streak but lose 4-2 (November 2008)
- One of my fave Sundin moments- when he destroys Brad May. Stretcher time.
And just to toss an extra clip in, here is Sundin, in his days with the Nordiques, fighting Dave Hannan.
Happy Hockey Day in Canada! May our day on the West coast be happier than yours!
Go Canucks!

Great post...
It’s never too early to give it up for the best.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...

I just don’t want Sundin to float around with the Canucks until the season is over. I want him to kick some ass to furter justify my man-crush on the guy :)
