Leafs 3 Rangers 2 (OT): Coach Killers For Hire
Whenever Brian Burke gets asked about no trade clauses he relates his belief that they are coach killers and that he hates them. Turns out that NTCs aren't the only coach killers in the organization. The Leafs have struck down Tom Renney after just recently being the straw that broke Michel Therrien's back.
And watching last night's game it was not hard to see why this move was made. The Rangers picked up two too many men penalties when one is generally unacceptable. Aside from that, calling them listless would do a disservice to all of the times that the Leafs lacked list and still played miles better than the Rangers did for most of that game.
They had a graphic of the Rangers' big money guys and the best thing that could be said about them was that Markus Naslund's contract ends after next season. They are composed around a quartet of players exposed for what they truly are: two complementary players (Drury and Gomez) and two washed up players (Naslund and Redden...oh my God he's signed for five more years!). Good thing Sather tricked Lundqvist into signing for five seasons following this developing disaster. I think that now, more than ever, we can dispel the notion of Sather as some genius GM in Edmonton. It looks more and more of a case of having great players fall into his lap than anything that he did.
The Leafs dominated at times throughout the net through nothing more than possessing an actual desire to win. Why did the Rangers lack that desire? Maybe they saw that three of the coaches that went to Europe to start the season had already been fired and could see the writing on the wall. As an aside, one of the highlights was Greg Millen trying to explain how it was such hardship for players to go over to Europe. After making it sound like the Trail of Tears Joe Bowen laughed at him and mentioned that flying first class is not exactly a terrible thing.
So the Leafs will wait patiently to see if the Rangers' change in coaches will make a change in performance. As someone over at Mirtle's noted the new coaches have all lost their first game in charge. Dammit.

They are so screwed for trade deadline, they have no cap room to make any moves whatsoever, they’re like what… about $450K under the cap right now and they have all these guys with massive contracts that no one’s going to go near.
Elliot Freedman on the Fan590 this morning mentioned that the only assets the Rangers have that any team has shown an interest in are their prospects and draft picks. I think the Leafs have a chance here to absorb some of the Rangers deadweight (i.e. salary dump) while swindling Sather out of a couple of draft picks/prospects.

I am more than willing to bury Naslund int he minors for another year for some picks and propsects
the rest of those are just too long and will be affecting the leafs when they shift into the build part of the rebuild

For sure
Perfectly willing to absorb Naslund, maybe swap Antropov plus one for Naslund and a first rounder

we could probably give em Poni and get the same return

Maybe it’s just me, but if Antro is allegedly worth a first rounder on his own, why would the Leafs deal him to New York for a first round pick and a boat anchor of a contract?

I don't know
I’m not really in the thinking mood

my thoughts exactly, we could ship him to Pittsburg and get far more for him, hell even Columbus would probably net us a better haul since neither would have to include dead weight

Well
Antro was a poor example, it was just his name was the first one that came up in my head and I ran with that… but we could toss something substantially less at them

Yeah, in theory Toronto would ship out something with no value, like Tim Stapleton, for Naslund and NYR’s first.

One would think cost containment/cost savings would be the big draw for the Rangers:
Pending Leaf UFAs:
Antropov
Battaglia
Devereaux
Newbury
May
Moore
Pending RFAs:
Deveaux
Grabovski
Hollwegg
Wiliams
Sifers
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...
Move Deveaux, Williams or Sifers form the RFA’s. I was hoping for bigger things from Williams, but I don’t think it’s going to happen for him.
Much as I hate the thought, if they can get a team to overpay for Moore, do it now before the bottom falls out on him. He’s not going to keep this scoring pace up (see Stajan, Matt.)

I dont care if Moore keeps up his points, he has other valuble intangibles that he contributes.
I havnt given up on Williams yet, he was improving his game a ton before he got hurt

the only players on that list I want to keep are Moore Grabbo and Williams
well and Antro because we can get more than the rangers will want to part with for him from someone esle

Antropov goes to the highest bidder.
Moore comes down to price. If he’ll sign on the cheap, the Leafs should re-ink him. If not, move him along while his value is at its peak.
Williams passed through waivers so his value is likely next to nil.
Devereaux deserves a shot somewhere, if they can trade him for a fifth or sixth round pick, that would be great.
Grabbo should be re-signed.

Agree with Jared here. There are five contracts that are really strangling the Rangers. In descending order of badness: Redden, Rozsival, Gomez, Drury, Naslund.
Redden $6.5M to 2013
Rozsival $5M to 2012
Gomez $7.3 to 2013
Drury $7M to 2012
Naslund $4M to 2010
Naslund is the only one that makes sense for the Leafs. The others have too many years to run to fit in with a re-building process that should see the Leafs dipping into the UFA pool rather heavily in 2011 or 2012.

That’s how bad those four are: they made me forget Rozsival.

Nor does he play defense, that said Redden is the sixth highest paid D-man in the NHL. Amazing to think Sather is still employed…

Well...
You have to wait until next year to get a chance at that one.

Good call.
I’ve already sent them the plan on how to get there. Working on a needlessly complicated flow chart.

i can simplify it for you...
win 12 games, don’t lose more than 3 to a team.
or, win – repeat as necessary until the Cup Finals.
as a side note, should that series ever come into play and Gretzky is still behind the Coyotes bench, what are the chances some Leaf fan high sticks Gretzky in the face?

game 6 before the opening faceof Wayne is found unconsious with a large gash above his eye, the only trace of the attack is a doug gilmour jersey with a very old blood stain on it

I don’t know how most of you can think Redden’s contract is worse than Gomez. Over paying for Redden can kind of make sense, he is a defenseman that can move the put well and is not a liability. When we signed Kubina for 5million a year many thought that was too much for him. In retrospect I bet most of us would now agree that was a relatively fair deal. I just can’t see Gomez living up to his deal. His best years are behind him, and the Rangers don’t have a Mogilny/Jagr type player to where Gomez can just feed them the puck and watch the assists rack up.
40 years we've stayed loyal, waited, and pained. That is the honor of being a Leafs' fan.
I think Reddens is the worst because it is not only a terrble contract, but was signed after the boat anchor contracts of the others and easily did more damage to the teams finances.

At least a forward won’t be contributing as much to goals against as a defenceman that could probably dress up as a pylon for Halloween.

What? Redden has been godawful.
