Back To Business!
"Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast."
"It jumped up a notch."
"Yeah, it did didn't it."
If you haven't already had a chance please head on over to (and recommend) my friendly reminder to rein in your filthy discussions. Won't anyone think of the children?
Anyway, so...the Leafs lost huge...very huge. So what can we look forward to today? The senators have three games in hand:
And they could pus the Leafs down to 4th last and a 10.7% chance of winning the right to draft John Ta-va-res (clap clap, clap-clap-clap).
- No more staged fights? I can get behind that and Mirtle outs the most egregious offenders. Tread carefully the next time you go to a Leafs' practice James. Deveaux is watching you...
- TSM breaks down Brian Burke's visit to McClown's show. No word on whether Burke wore sunglasses.
- No Leafs will be left on Pogge's Christmas Card list by April. I think this might be the worst rookie hazing ever.
- The wheels for a Kaberle trade are being put in motion by his agent...
- Now, Duane won't dance on Marty York's journalistic grave and he'll actually defend him. Luckily for me, I am not always on the industry's side so I will do a jig. Update: CoxBloc has the perfect reply.
- Grabbo's been put in the corner because of his erratic play and lack of defensive diligence. He's also an RFA after this summer...
- I in no way understand the firing Eric Lindros.

One thing to take away from last night
is that if either our starter or backup had played it would have been at least 7-0.
that ain’t much worse than 5-0.

Pogge did impress me though, his raw talent did get some moments to shine.
His glove hand still needs a little work, and his positioning could be better, but there is nothing that is wrong that cannot be fixed.

Marty York
http://www.coxbloc.com/2007/11/the-dook-of-york.html
That piece is brutal, and probably NSFW. Someone must have peed and pooped (SFW) in my Mueslix that day. To be fair, Marty emailed us after it went up and gave us credit for taking him on. I always meant to post his email to us, because he said there were some serious inaccuracies in the Ryerson story we quoted.
Having re-read that piece...
…it isn’t really all that NSFW. Also, I find it hilarious that I criticized York for being bitter and mean-spirited in what is most likely Cox Bloc’s most bitter and mean-spirited entry. I also found it interesting to see that Dick RiPietro has been trolling since the early days of the blog.
I once sort of knew a TSN-type who worked with Marty on the football panel. I don’t think they got on.

Staged fights
Would that include fights like Mayers/Kotsopolous, or Belak/Jansen? Seems like those are the ones many fans enjoy the most.

probably to a degree, but if the so many fights for player playing so limited time suspension were in effect, it wouldn’t matter if the vengeance fights went down, because how often do those happen?

But how do you distinguish? The Laraque case was an extreme example, and I’m sure that happens sometimes with other guys, but short of miking everyone how do you know?
I think it was Bowen who was proposing that maybe we should ban the fights right off of a faceoff. But if two guys want to go, they’ll go. If you make them wait five seconds, they’ll just wait five seconds. If you say there has to be some sort of contact first, well, I’m sure they’ll be happy to create some.
I’m not against the idea, I just can’t picture a realistic way to enforce it.

After careful review and much consideration....
I have come to the conclusion that the Leafs are much more terrible than I previously imagined. Last night was all kinds of embarrassing. I like that Wilson didn’t let the lack of a night off be an excuse for the team not showing up. What I don’t like, is that seems to be happening more often than not lately. Perhaps the upcoming deadline and possibility of new addresses has encouraged some players (cough, Antropov, cough) to mentally check out.
I’m really liking the line of Moore, Blake and Poni. I didn’t realize how fast Poni is, seems like when he skated with Mats and Antro, he matched their tempo, but playing with a quicker, feistier line has given Ponikarovsky a new gear he’s never shown us before.
Pogge is going to be an awesome NHL goalie, once the Leafs in front of him get things like defensive zone coverage and scoring goals sorted out. As Jared pointed out earlier in the comments, his deficiencies are noticeable, minimal and workable.

the main thing that’s sticking in my craw is, like you said, people mentally checking out and doing stupid stuff.
that having been said, there is fiestyness out there. Moore’s a great example for this since he’s actually stepping up more than he was last season.
Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing
Good call, blurr
Right now, Blake, Moore, and Schenn are the only players that are fun to watch. The rest of this team seems to be completly lacking in motivation.
by general borschevsky on Feb 5, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions
I would be enjoing Pogges play, if he wasnt getting totally left alone back there. some of his saves and his poise with the puck was nice to see, but watching him get ripped and not have a chance every 5 mins kinda depressed that.
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option

I read somewhere that Wilson and the brass want to see how Pogge reacts to getting tossed around. Right now, I’d say it’s not a good reaction.
Mentally, he’s brushing it off, yes, but I think they might be looking for something a little angrier. Someone who will look at their team in the dressing room and ask them WTF they are doing.

true, but he is also a young kid 3 games into his NHL career, he might be worried about comming off wrong to a team and is bottling his anger.
I think once he gets more comfortable and doesnt feel like the “new guy that needs to fit in” you’ll see more anger. He had some fire in his eyes during the interview after the Minny debacle. He wasnt a happy camper

Berger made the point this morning
and i think he’s right, that as it becomes more apparent to this team that they’re really now playing for nothing, there will be more and more of these from here on in. Good from a draft perspective, bad for those who actually like watching a team that tries.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
enter start of the season VS now.
Unless I am just miss-remembering things on purpose. But what the hell happened to the plucky team that was super entertaing to watch even in the worst defeat and still managed 40+ shots a game?

Brad May
See, I didn’t have high expectations for him, so I’m not all that disappointed in him
Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing
what i mean is...
Burke gave Wilson the OK to suck. Burke’s a big fan of the draft. He wants high picks. Every trade talk he’s given has always pointed out the fact that picks have to be included. His comment about Schenn being available for 10 1st round picks, although highly improbable, goes to show what he’s shopping for.
I really think Burke saw what Wilson’s been doing, and realized it was hurting our draft chances. I noticed last night that Wilson didn’t look all that annoyed at the lack of effort. I mean, this could all be “2nd gunman in the grassy knoll” speculation, but who knows…

could be. I agree though. Early in the season, we would’ve seen Wilson blow a gasket at that game. Instead, when I was watching, all I ever saw were eye rolls and a defeated expression.

Eric Lindros
I’ll have to agree that I don’t understand the firing, but then again I really don’t understand what he was doing there anyway. From what I’ve read it seems like his role and his duty was limited, wasn’t it? Or am I way off?
Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing
given the history of rampant abuse of power in the NHLPA...
his role was incredibly important.
I understand what KK was saying, in that, the players don’t really care about the union business and would rather focus on hockey, but Eric’s job was INCREDIBLY important to ensure everything being done was on the up and up.
It’s just sad that more players (if it truly was the players who motivated the firing/dismissal) don’t understand what the Big E was doing for them.

makes sense
Sometimes people get so comfortable with each other they forget that the internet is public space, and other people can read the comments.
It happens. Anyone offended (by the PPP request to be less potty-mouthed) has a thin, thin skin and short, short fuse – and should get their dander up over something that is actually important.
(I try to mind my language because it’s a good habit – I want my nephew to learn how to cuss from his dad and his grandfathers, not from his aunt who gives him piggyback rides. That would upset the natural order of the universe.)
(Plus I’m quite possibly the worst cusser ever. In all of history.)
"A vacuum is a hell of a lot better than some of the stuff that nature replaces it with." -- Tennessee Williams
Brutal
I managed to catch the last 8 minutes of the game last night, wow, just wow. What a huge disappointment if that level of effort was consistent over the entire 60 minutes.
Each minus player should be forced to give Pogge a foot massage of no less than 10 minutes per minus number. That’ll spread the punishment out pretty good.
Also, I had previously been under the impression that a Natural Hat Trick was 3 goals in one period. After looking it up I found there are three possible natural hat tricks:
A natural hat trick is when a player scores either a) a goal in each of the three periods, b) three goals in one period, or c) three of his team’s goals in succession in one game, with the one involved player scoring all three goals in a row, without anyone else from their own team, or the opponent’s team, scoring a goal in-between.
I dunno, I think those should have unique names because it seems kind of general in that case.
I think this discussion has been had before
Possibly on Mirtle’s site. I was always under the impression that only C) is correct. Three in a row during a game, no interruption by other goals. I refuse to acknowlege A) or B) as correct.
I should clarify my impression – it was that it was 3 goals in one period that were in succession without anyone else on either team scoring. That would seem to be the toughest one to get. So I was surprised when I checked the box score and he had 2 in one period and 1 in another..
Anyway I was glad to read the thoughts on pogge.
that’s what i thought. three goals in succession in one period…
