Sean Avery Could Help the Toronto Maple Leafs
"Are ex-Ranger, ex-King, ex-Stars Sean Avery’s 15 minutes of fame up yet? I don’t think so! Before the trade deadline, the Leafs could take him and make him a hometown hero."

I didn’t write it, dudebro.
Did you read the article?
Ain't nothing but puck drops and poke checks, babydoll.

i did read it...
tuned out at this point…
He is the Mike Tyson of hockey, the Diego Maradona…What Shane Hollywood Warne is to cricket…if not what Wilt Chamberlain was to basketball. In tennis, the superbrat John McEnroe and Illie Nastase are two names that spring immediately to mind.
In the new NHL, minus the big goons, Avery has become an enforcer, fighting anyone and everyone, and throwing everybody off their game.

No kidding
What do those names have in common? Even though they were crazy they were among the best (if not the best) at their sport.
And all to ‘sprint to the finish’? What a terrible idea.

Avery does not equal Maradona
Diego was one of the four greatest players ever (alongside Pele, Cruyff Zidane. Two nutters and a Dutchman… At least Pele’s sane.)
When he was playing anyone would have taken a chance on him cos he was the best player in the world.
Warne is one of the five greatest cricketers who’ve ever lived. Same goes for him.
You can make a case for saying the same for McEnroe and tennis.
Avery???
The only thing worse than the writing in the linked article is arguing that Avery would help a team who has had serious locker room problems for a decade.

This is the biggest contention for me about Avery. He was literally booted out of LA, a team that is similar to the Leafs in terms of youth (quality, notwithstanding) because his attitude was toxic. He didn’t teach or show the guys what it took to win, offered little team camaraderie, and brought a lot of unwanted distractions to a team that was trying to find an identity. If you want to argue he shouldn’t be held to those standards, fair enough. But why bring him in if he doesn’t offer those traits?
Avery has the hockey skills, as evidenced by his goals and skating ability. He may not be a heavyweight, but he knows how to fight and hit. But for a player trying to find his place in a hockey team and find the right balance between edgy and douchebag, the Leafs don’t have the proper pieces in the dressing room or even the right coaches to give Avery the time to mature.

it's moot...
i think any team that takes him on will want to see how he handles some time in the minors. If I were a GM and was just crazy enough to think about taking him on, I’d send him down first. Sure, he’s gotta pass through waivers, but so what, then he becomes someone else’s problem.
so, for the sake of this argument, let’s assume he clears waivers. I’d leave him in the minors for the season, until the off season period when waivers don’t apply, and, if he seems like his heads on straight, I’d call him up.
But first, I’d have to be certified insane for even thinking it…

Well, it’s moot because no team will give up anything of value for Avery. The minors is a given because he’s essentially under orders to straighten his game out before re-entering an NHL roster. The suspension may officially have read a few games, but it’s pretty much a year long one.

it's funny...
because Avery may be out of the league longer than Bertuzzi…
not funny haha obviously, but odd that you can practically end a guys life on the ice and it’s all good. make a less than pleasant remark about someone of the opposite sex, and you’ll sit for longer.

in all honesty, we’re a few years away from being any sort of contender. so why dont we just enjoy the hilarity and media circus that would surround avery in toronto?
plus i feel like it would inspire wilson to take his shoe beating to a whole new level.

i dunno...
maybe he actually has reformed his attitude?
he clearly is dedicated to getting back in the games, otherwise he wouldve been like “F THIS!” and walked away altogether when he was forced to do the behavioural therapy

Money (or lack thereof) makes people say and do anything.
I’ve said my piece about Avery earlier – the Leafs are showing the first signs of rebuilding. I really don’t want any player to risk that, as funny and hilarious Avery could be in a media market like Toronto. Dude ain’t a bad guy, but stay away from Schenn.

Schenn would feed avery his lunch anyways

Bingo
The guy knows that he is possibly on his way out of the league. Without the NHL connection to fall back on all of his fashion and entertainment shit goes from “NHLer interns at Vogue!” to “some random douchebag interns at Vogue”.
He is nothing without the NHL.

The L.A. Analogy
The story, as far as I know, out of LA is that Avery got suspended for, among various sins, incessantly teasing Dustin Brown about his lisp. Now Brown is not only a young, good building block for LA, but their captain. You put Avery anywhere near Schenn and who knows what damage he could do.
