Our own gbrizett, Norm James, interviews London's newest superstar John Tavares.
What's he think about the Leafs? You'll have to watch to the end to find out.
Apparently Taylor Hall nailed Tavares. From gbrizett:
Tavares at hospital..
Precaution.
Could be down for a few weeks.

And I thought I was the only one who thought Tavares needed to improve his media skills. I figured it was because he was still relatively young, but in those two years I’ve compared, not much difference.
Oh well, I couldn’t care less if he performs on the ice.

That’s not to say this wasn’t a great interview at all!
I feel like a tool now.

hahaha
He’s like Crosby. They’ve been at it so long that they do it almost by rote. It was cool to see him get excited about getting picked by the Leafs.

I like Bouwmeester’s interviews.. Just because I can relate to how uncomfortable that must be to get grilled like that. Ah well, comes with the job.
yeah, it’s tough. Any display of personality gets you slapped down so why do it?
Plus, it’s not like these questions are penetrating.

well when avery criticized the league for not doing a good job with marketing, i agreed with him. but i also kind of understand why the league has a hard time marketing its stars. most of them are absolutely terrible in interviews… seriously, sportscentre could be turned into a drinking game when you take sip/shot for every cliche a player uses!
thank god for guys like ovechkin/stamkos/kane/etc who actually make interviews engaging!
that said… i still love tavares

Yeah. The sad thing is that it’s the same for all of the pro leagues.
Now, I don’t want them being pricks like Avery but the Russian interviews that Puck Daddy has done have been great.

I so wanted to hear a Grabbo counter interview

Too far and between though. A lot surely has to do with the label hockey players of being “humble” and showing “humility”. Not that these are bad traits at all (contrast this with football or basketball), but they don’t play well at all in interviews and the overall marketing of hockey players through their personalities.
I do wish that hockey players in the NHL were given more freedom to say what’s really on their minds, but that’s fairly hard to do when the culture breeds polite, yet intensely private players like Toews who are much preferred to let their play do all the talking. Again, great from a hockey standpoint, but killer in terms of marketing and spreading the game.

atleast Tavares allows some emotion to come through his media training, he was more dynamic for sure in the Jrs with the gold and PK subban to play off, but that sly smile when he talked about playing for the Leafs showed a ton. I remember a crosby interview when asked what he’d think if he was drafted by the Habs, no smile, no change in voice tone or pitch. Dude is an interview robot

A lot of criticism is legit with Crosby, but call me an apologist or crazy, but I don’t blame Crosby or at least, use his interview skills against him. Unlike 95% of the guys in the NHL, Crosby has had the media spotlight on him since he was a child. He’s been so ingrained with saying the right thing from an early age, it’s second nature to him. I actually feel sort of sorry for him because his handlers probably scared the living daylights out of him to always say the right thing and never stray from it in fear of media backlash, decrease in marketability, or simply, people taking advantage of him.

Add me if you wanna play some NHL 09, CoD;WaR or Halo
is it just me or have interviews of Leaf players in general gone way down since Sundin left?
Sure we get the obligatory between periods, pre and post game ice blurbs, but when was the last time there was a legit Leaf player interview that wasnt about how much they sucked that night?
Hell, they had a peice on the Grabbo little tits blood feud where they interviewed people from both teams about it. the only one on the Leaf side they talked to was Wilson, and they talked to like 5 Habs players and their coach.
Maybe BB is trying to keep a lid on things?

Perhaps Brian Burke has warned players about the handling of media in general, but I don’t think he has said anything specific. Sundin spoiled the Leafs in many ways, and one of that is his handling of the press. He’s one of the few guys willing and open (personal life aside) to give pretty substantial interviews, win or lose, in the entire NHL. The Leafs as is, just don’t have a lot of players that are a) quotable, b) pronounced leaders, and c) speak English very well. That goes for the higher European content, but also guys like Matt Stajan who are usually good with the media, but not much depth to his answers.
