I don’t think Nik’s play has merited that discussion to this point
Um…
Look, I’m all for straight talk and all that, but he does know that other GMs can see these quotes, right?
Down Goes Brown - Unapologetically nostalgic for the past. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future.
they aren’t those fuck-ugly glowing ones from the 90s, are they?

OH GOD NO!!!
Ok ok…let’s get to bargaining…I think Burke is telling Antropov to prove to him that he wants to be in Toronto through his play rather than just words and actions like getting his citizenship and actually living in Toronto.

at least you don’t need to worry about him being traded now!

I tend to agree. To me this suggests, counter-intuitively, that he will be resigned, perhaps in the $2.8-3M range- recognizing his lack of serious injury, but not over estimating his value- rather than dealt. What is the realistic return for him anyway, a 3rd and a prospect? Might as well keep him for that.
Maybe Burke is trying to shame into him re-signing a lower deal than he’d get on the free market.
Maybe Shame him out of standing pat on an NTC?
that way Burke can move him easy if he wants, or keep him around at lesser cost.

Since the rebuild as announced is not a one-year plan, why empty the cupboards this year? Antro and Poni are useful and fairly cheap top 6 forwards. As long as their contract demands stay reasonable, there should be no incentive to make a deal. Unless of course someone comes in with one of those crazy deadline offers.
yeah, im fairly convinced Burke wont trade em off unless he can get what he wants from them. I just hope Anro doesnt walk for nothing but cap space

Hmmm
I’m thinking Burke could be working to eliminate the worry of any interested party that he’s going to trade Antropov and re-sign him in the off-season. He could be telling the truth and setting the record straight in that regard… or he could be trying to pull the wool over the eyes of other GMs.
Maybe him and Cliff are gonna play good cop bad cop with antro

To me this just seem like Burke is try to get rid the general belief around the league that if Antro is traded at the deadline he’ll just come back to TO this summer. I don’t think it is anything more than a fake assurance to interested teams to try and increases Antropov’s value. But hey I could be wrong… but I don’t think I am

This is probably some kind of master plan by Burke that us mere mortals are unable to comprehend at this time. The guy does not go on a hockey show and shoot his mouth off and potentially screw the team in some way, he just is too cagey for that. Or so I hope..
Yeah
He’s not a nutjob…well, not a dumb one.

Burke's a man of his word
Seriously, this isn’t backroom sabotage. We’re talking about a guy who called up Staffan Kronwall knowing full well he’d be picked off on waivers because he “promised him and his agent” that he’d be called up this season. The guy who let Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne completely fuck over the Ducks last year out of respect for the decisions they had to make. Burke is not a man who says things just to fuck with people.
Honestly, any NHL pro scout can see that Antro is slow as a bear out there, is on pace for anther 50 point season, and is streaky as adult diapers. We needed him to prove that he’d broken out and to take command of our offense, and instead he’s often been relegated to the background and is on pace for a below par level of points for a guy who’s had nothing but first line minutes and top powerplay time.
I’m wondering at Burke too at this point, obviously he’s trying to light a fire under Nik, but the guy clearly has the skills to be a Franzen/Holmstrom type player. So far he just hasn’t been consistent and he still shies away from using his shot and size the way he should.
maybe
he knows how much Nik wants to stay in Toronto, and he’s saying this because it’s true – unless, of course, he picks up his play. Could be a move to motivate Nik to play better, and see if he can raise his game.

I’m totally swiping that “streaky as adult diapers” line. Gold!
But yeah, I could see how Burke thinks Antro is a worthy salvage candidate. Antro has the physical gifts there and should be much more dominant than he is. Could motivate him into really giving it his all, or if not ship him outta town. Perhaps Burke is giving Antro the option of elevating his game and sticking around like he wants to, or else he’ll be dumped as a rental player.
I don’t think Burke saying that he won’t be re-signed will diminish his trade value all that much if it’s a contender team with good depth and can use Antro for a playoff run. It isn’t like the scouts from other teams weren’t paying attention to Antro’s play, they know he’s a bit of an underperformer.

This is Burke's way...
of telling the fans to say farewell to the familiar.
I for one, like it.

Could be
Burke’s way of lighting a fire under Antro’s ass
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
or it could be that the whole thing is meaningless fodder for water cooler conversations across Toronto
I could see that. I wouldnt be surprised if Burke walked up to UncaCliff before the interview and said “Hey Cliff, watch this shit, the media is gonna loose their minds”

Wait
This probably just means that Antro is going to be traded. If Burke extended Antro now, trading him at the deadline would mean he’d be part of that team for good.
Not extending Antropov means the Leafs can rent him out.
