Fun work story
I’ve been getting kind of bored with the monotony of doing the same thing every day, so I’ve starting inventing terms for the sports lexicon and putting them into scripts, just to see if the ‘talent’ will read it.
3 different people said “Thick Crush!” on national television last night without questioning what it meant.

He’s been good, but I have to imagine that his style of play is much more tiring at the NHL level, and we’ve been playing him a lot of minutes in key situations. We really need Kabby back, but it’s nice to know losing Kronwall and Petiot didn’t hurt the depth too much.

I agree with you on pretty much everything here. It’s not a big deal at all. The media’s treatment of it (and working in the belly of the beast) is what brought this whole schpiel out of me in the first place. The network I worked for showed Ovechkin’s celebration SIX times in a half hour. That’s once every 5 minutes. 2 panel hits, 2 sections of ‘Player reaction’ from around the league. Aside from the 30 seconds after Ovechkin stopped the dancing, what player in the league other than who’s on the ice would give a shit? These guys aren’t worrying about guys celebrating in other games. They’ve got their own problems and their own team to worry about. No player went out of his way to give his comments about Ovechkin. The only reason anything was said is because some out of shape, sweaty, 40 year old man shoved a microphone in their faces and asked them about it. Then another out-of-touch 40 year man decides that it’s the only newsworthy thing to happen all day, and bam. It’s a big deal. It’s unbelievably frustrating to see something as naturally entertaining and fun as sports get taken to a degree that it was never meant to get to. The straight fact that I’m advocating is this: Sports are being taken too seriously. They aren’t life and death, they’re entertainment. The amount of money the athletes make isn’t what bothered me, It’s the thought that it matters what they think of other players in the league. Keeping them happy is essential to keeping things going in the right direction. All entertainers are overpaid. Musicians, Actors, Directors, Celebrities and Athletes alike. They’re overpaid because we’re willingly giving them the attention and the means to be paid so by providing the revenue in exchange for making life a little more fun. There’s nothing wrong with that at all.
I don’t have a problem with any celebration by any athlete. Why should I? I’m not a hockey player.

It’s unbelievably frustrating to see something as naturally entertaining and fun as sports get taken to a degree that it was never meant to get to.
While I wholeheartedly agree, to be fair, this has been going on for a long time. I mean look at the world of soccer/football. Sports, while entertainment, has always been taken to a level that goes beyond normal rationale and understanding. It’s also why we have so many people invested in sports and why everyone, and i mean everyone, has an opinion on sports.And it’s this seriousness that for many people makes it entertaining. And while it’s hard to look at sports in a life and death manner, for many countries it can be taken in that context, especially for those in the developing world or tied so closely to national identity. Sports becomes an escape and it becomes a part of their lives. And until this changes, which I doubt will ever happen, there will always be the observers that play up these feelings and exploit them to their benefit and help feed this consumption and consumerism.
