Look it's Dave Feschuk's new book! Check it out, on the cover there's a joke about 1967 and an insult to "Leafs Nation". There's also a picture of someone in a Leafs jersey wearing a paper bag over their head because they're embarrassed. Boy that tickles the old funny bones!

Wow.
Just… wow.
Feschuk really sticking it to the Leafs and their fans. He’ll be the toast of the Toronto sports writer cocktail party circuit this spring.

A friendly aside:
“Brian Burke” is making news in the Globe again.
In fact, the most entertaining Twitter feeds in sports tend to have nothing to do with athletes. Instead, they are satire feeds like the one lampooning espn.com columnist Rick Reilly, or the parody of Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke which includes entries like the one from Feb. 21 that read, “Just ran into Kyle Wellwood arriving at the ACC. He seemed kind of depressed. Told him to keep his chins up.”

I can’t believe there was a business plan for this. It’s going to get more reviews than any other book this fall season and it will likely sell about 20 copies. I mean, who’s going to buy it? Leaf fans won’t shell out for it, fans of other teams are unlikley to blow $20 on it, so who’s left? Is there that many frustrated former leaf fans out there? Could I ask more questions in this comment?

The business plan is: Make product. Put Leaf logo on it. Sell boatloads.
Seriously, when it comes to Christmas shopping I think I have relatives who would buy me an enema bag if it had a Leaf logo on it. Which is pretty much what this book will end up being, come to think of it.

AND THAT IS WHY THE JURY IS OUT ON GRANGE
Feschuk is a drive-by hack job artist that saw a chance to slap a Leafs logo on something. He’s the Raptors reporter that can’t even get Chris Bosh to talk to him because of his modus operandi of writing sensationalist articles.
As an aside, and this was meant to be a surprise, I was interviewed for the book and apparently a section features yours truly so I’ll be getting a free advanced copy to review and subsequently burn.

I knew that Michael Grange was writing a book about MLSE after he e-mailed me out of the blue. At no time did I know he was working with Feschuk until Eyebeleaf told me. We’ll see what makes it into the book. I passed along a lot of Barilkosphere material debunking a lot of the leading questions I was asked including a lot of stuff from you and MF37 on the economics of the Leafs.

Talking to Grange was interesting and the part that includes me (that I know of) is on the cultural importance of the Maple Leafs.
The rest of the talk was about him bringing up myths (Montreal Fans Caused Change, Leaf Fans Can Boycott Their Way To Success) and me debunking them and shining the light of Truth on the darkness.
Basically, I was like the Defender of the Faith.

Face it
We can’t win. No matter what the media is writing another stupid piece on something. Even when a couple years down the line, when the team is ready to compete, the media will nitpick at ANYTHING MLSE (some of it rightfully so).
As Leaf fans, we are eternally fucked, even if the boys end up winning a cup in the next 5 years, a Cox or Berger will criticize them for something, or write something about how, ok you won a cup, what about next year.
Disappointed since 1984
I don’t really know who Michael Grange is. But am I right that he and Feschuk are both NBA writers?

Yes
Now they can give their NBA counterparts something to do while the NBA goes broke and interest flags: Write a book about the local team that fans actually care about.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
And this disappoints me to no end. Not so much on Feschuk since his reputation even goes beyond readers (he’s known enough in the media world that even one of my journalism teachers gave a “no comment” on his writing), but Grange. His basketball thoughts are very well-thought out and his assessments on the Raptors is usually bang-on. He rightly predicted the non-factor of Sean Marion, Bargniani and his long journey as a viable player, and about the complete tear down of the Raptors.
I don’t know what to say but simply, journalists must have a real hard time making money right now. This has to be a project for guys like Grange as supplemental income, right? Why else is a guy who has worked in CIAU basketball and NBA basketball writing about hockey, a sport he admits isn’t much more than a passing interest, at least the Leafs?
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

I think the media in this town gets a bad rap from nerds who sit in their basement and have nothing better to do than insult good writers who make good points. It’s disgusting how bloggers just want to cut down newspaper writers for no reason.

I was at the screwjob, but sitting in the top row of the Bell Centre.
Anything juicy to report?
Not really. I had a press pass from my college newspaper (arranged months in advance) and was able to wander around for a while before the show before they kicked me out.
I do remember see Jim Neidhart there, even though everyone always claims that all of Bret’s friends boycotted the show. He was finishing a workout at the Corel Center gym and he looked like he might actually murder anyone who made eye contact with him.
I also saw Shawn Michaels and HHH, laughing it up and looking like they were having the time of their lives. Of course, HHH was like 190 lbs back then.

Damien Cox loses it
He wades into the comments again, with hilarious results:
Damien here. . .okay, two separate issues here, folks.
First, puck was loose, not covered. Player bangs it over line. Good goal. Rest is just usual whining from Leaf fans who still want to talk about Kerry Fraser’s non-call on Gretzky high stick in ‘93 playoffs. If it was the Leafs trying to score and the ref waved it off on same play, we’d here no end of whining from Leaf fans about how it was a good goal.
Some things never change.
Second, even if call was wrong, there’s no reason for Gerber to bump the ref, and definitely no reason to shoot the puck at the official. He’s a veteran player who should know better. Two points were still very much available to his team, and he jeopardized that by getting booted out and forcing the Leafs to put a very cold Curtis Joseph in.
That Cujo miraculously saved the day is of enormous credit to him, but doesn’t make Gerber any less of an idiot for what he did.
