Leafs Deadline Recap

Six transactions today for the Leafs, Toskala on the IR, Antropov and Moore traded for picks, the Leafs end up in a salary dump with Tampa and the Leafs claim a few bodies off the waiver wire. Check out the details after the jump and discuss in the comments!
| In | Out |
| Martin Gerber (G) | Nik Antropov (F) |
| Erik Reitz (D) | Dominic Moore (F) |
| Andy Rogers (D) | Richard Petiot (D) |
| Jamie Heward (D) (IR) | |
| Olaf Kolzig (G) (IR) | |
| 2009 NYR 2nd | |
| 2009 NYR Conditional | |
| 2009 CAR 2nd | |
| 2009 TBL 4th |

Leafs put G Vesa Toskala on IR:
Toskala will be having hip and groin surgery and will be out for four months.
Leafs claim D Eric Reitz and G Martin Gerber off waivers:
Gerber will be starting tomorrow night against Washington. Erik Reitz will report to the Marlies in all likelihood.
Leafs trade F Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers for a 2nd round pick in 2009 and a conditional pick:
This seems like a horrible deal unless Antropov absolutely couldn't be signed for below market value. Antropov will probably garner $4m on the open market this summer and could be a decent signing for the Leafs in the summer if Burke chooses to go that route. The Rangers won't have the cap room to keep him.
Leafs trade F Dominic Moore to Buffalo for Carolina's 2nd round pick in 2009:
Dominic Moore wanted more than $5.1M over three years and is gone. I think getting a second rounder for a waiver wire pickup is a nice job, and it's entirely value added by Ron Wilson. Moore won't even sniff $1.7M a season on the open market this season and if desired could be resigned cheap. I think he's a greedy piece of garbage who should be appreciative of the chance he got in Toronto.
Last but not least the Leafs pick up G Olaf Kolzig, D Jamie Heward, D Andy Rogers and a 4th round pick from Tampa for Richard Petiot.
This is a move to get Tampa into revenue sharing territory, and save Tampa's owners about $625,000. In return the Leafs get a pick and a prospect. Heward and Kolzig are both injured and UFAs at the end of the season, they'll likely never play a game in a Leafs uniform.
Reactions
I think we didn't really get great value for Antropov, but I also don't know if he was refusing to re-sign in Toronto which changes things drastically. As much as I wanted more than a 2nd for Antropov having him walk for nothing would be worse.
I'm pretty happy about getting a 2nd for Moore, I kind of wish he wasn't a turd and signed here cheap, but here we are. Erik Reitz is a non-factor, Gerber is a stop gap to put someone in the net cheap for the rest of the season.
In the Kolzig move the Leafs spent $625,000 on a decent prospect in Rogers and Tampa's 4th rounder which is basically a late third. Slick move by Burke.
The most important move of the day is the subtraction. Losing Moore and Antropov is a lot of Toronto's offense, and losing Toskala for Gerber means more goals against - the Leafs are going to improve their first rounder drastically in the next few weeks.

As far as I am concerned here the most important part of this is the fact that we’ve lost a large portion of our offence and got nothing back in return. Our first round pick this summer should be a lot higher than it is now.

I bet Odin is happy, Phx looks like this years trade deadline winner

They got a lot of picks
Question for Calgary now, what do they do to get themselves back under the cap? Send a few peeps down to the minors?

That was the deal that was apparently scuttling the Moore trade. Chicago was apparently playing the Leafs off against Anaheim to lower the price. Wonder what the final deal was.

So basically Burke spent three weeks doing a media tour to push expectations down to the absolute minimum possible, then barely met them.

Burke’s hands were tied six ways to Sunday. Reread the article on the deadline I posted:

Modest returns for Moore: check
BB managed to sell all his spoiling beef, and got market price for it. He gathered up a few more draft picks, hoping against hope that we roll the bones and pick up the next Zetterberg/Kaberle somewhere in the later rounds. Once the summer arrives, Kubina and Kabby’s NTCs are no longer an issue and he can start maneuvering a bit more freely with those assets. This is only the beginning.

The Leafs got more than modest returns for Moore. Darcy Regier just got sold a lemon. Moore has done absolutely nothing in his career to merit being worth a 2nd round pick and a 6th would have been much more appropriate compensation. Moore has been exceptionally consistent through his career. He’s a 20-point player and only of marginal NHL caliber. This season is the aberration, not his previous three and Regier was completely fooled.
Great trade for the Leafs and horrible, horrible mistake by the Sabres.

I know this is getting ridiculous because so many people hated Nik Anropov and saw him as the problem of Toronto’s inability to be a Stanley Cup contender (I hope then you guys can clearly hear the sounds of my eyes rolling), but listening to his short interview with TSN shows how classy and respectful he really was, despite having a right to be angry with Burke and a lot of the fans treatment. Hope Antropov does well in New York – I’m still a lifelong fan.

no knock on antro
but expectations for him from the Leafs and from the fans have been high since day one and while he is a solid player, he never did meet those expectations

He was the Leafs highest first round pick in a decade. I think expectations were in line with a top 10 pick.

look at
the players drafted before him: After Vinny Lecavalier went first, the order went David Legwand, Brad Stuart, Bryan Allen, Vitali Vishnevski, Rico Fata, Manny Malhotra, Mark Bell, Mike Rupp and then Antropov.
He did quite well.

i think this trade is gonna do wonders for Antro. He’s not required to carry the offense in NY, and he can really showcase himself as he won’t be playing against the top opposing d pairs every night.
I’ve never thought Antro was as good as most people did. He’s not bad, he’s just not a guy we can build a team around.

I’ve never thought Antro was as good as most people did. He’s not bad, he’s just not a guy we can build a team around.
He was generally regarded as the epitome of the Maple Leafs failure during his entire time here, so I like to see who there “most people” are. He was so hated, it was pretty clear to me, people never gave him the credit when he did do the right things.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Again
Expectations… I remember when he first started playing that everyone here (mostly the media) was labeling him as the franchise’s next Mats Sundin but that never panned out
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
No way. When he was drafted, Antropov was immediately as a bust by most pundits. He was an unknown gangly teen from Kazakhstan, not exactly a hotbed of top flight hockey players.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Alright
Maybe not the media but that expectation did come from somewhere, my memory is sketchy as to the source but I know my first impression of him that I got from everyone was that he’s supposed to be Sundin’s successor
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
It was a pretty bad year for the draft in 1998, but aside from the height, the Mats Sundin comparisons were ridiculous then. Antropov was so raw that people were surprised if he ever played in the NHL.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
the Mats Sundin comparisons were ridiculous then
Not entirely, when Sundin first broke into the NHL after being drafted he was this tall lanky player who looked like he could barely skate, I suppose Antro brought back some of those memories
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
Scouting reports on Sundin were the complete opposite. He was gangly, but his skating was impressive for a guy his size. It’s why Quebec chose him and why Malkin was compared to Sundin when he got drafted.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
I’m not disagreeing with you per se, winkle. It’s just that Antropov was chosen by the wrong team at the wrong position, so naturally, the hate was natural if not inevitable.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
No no, the hate wasn’t fair and shouldn’t have happened, I was a very causal hockey fan when Antro first came on the scene and hadn’t devoted my soul to the Leafs yet at that point and I was just trying to recap my point of view.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
Understood. I say I wasn’t disagreeing with you entirely because the media did play up his 10 goal game at a junior game and people immediately picked up on it expecting a world-class sniper. Yet, they didn’t really like to expand that this was done against a b-level type team in one of those relegation national games.

I agree, I have loved Antropov his entire time here.
I don’t agree with all this hate on Burke though, we don’t really need Antropov for the rest of the year, we can re-sign him in the summer, and ideally tanking is the best option for the rest of the year. Sure we didn’t get that much for him, but we got something, and the conditional pick (could) be good if the Rangers somehow make a run this year (which they probably won’t).
Let the tank begin!
I’m only angry with Burke about throwing Antropov under the bus like he did a few weeks back. To say flat out he doesn’t deserve to be re-signed was a shitty way to handle a player who has been with the same team for a decade.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
And I will, but only for the Antropov matter. I’m not too hung up on the Leafs deals or lack thereof that much. Burke did the best he could do, in my mind. We were set up for trade deadline disappointment the day Burke came on board. Rebuilds don’t happen in one day.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
To be fair though, Antropov wasn’t Burke’s player, he didn’t draft him, he didn’t keep him around.
So really you can’t blame him for coming out and speaking his mind.
Bingo
A lot of people will hopefully realize what has been lost.

Answering a question about whether he was expecting to make deals for Kubina or Kaberle.
Burke says he doesn’t believe in asking players to waive NTCs.
Says it’s a breach of trust.
Unfairly comes back on the player if the player says he doesn’t want to waive and everyone starts “throwing rocks” at the player and calling him a “selfish bastard.” Not fair, says Burke.

So
TSN has declared Calgary the winner of this year’s trade deadline… winner in terms of activity? For sure although I (and most people) would say they gave up too much for Leopold and even arguably for Jokenin not to mention the fact that they’re still over the cap?

I could be wrong, but since the deal hasnt been officially approved, he cant comment on it

He gave a deadpan “no” twice when Duthie was asking him about it. But he did acknowledge it in the press conference
by Its Cold In Here on Mar 4, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah he just was asked again and it is the Kolzig deal.
by The Meatriarchy on Mar 4, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions
Burke basically confirmed this was the Kolzig deal during the presser. A reporter had info about it, but Burke wasn’t sure it had cleared NHL trade desk yet, so he wasn’t prepared to confirm the names - but went on to talk about how Olaf Kolzig is injured and it wouldn’t affect the Leafs’ goaltending situation this year.

No, he would be taking Johnny Bower's ice time.
And Bower is better at age 154 than Lalime ever was.

well
Edmonton gave up a 2nd rounder for Kotalik, so I’d say we got fair value for Antro.
Still.
Makes me sad.
he make me mad@
promised a 1st and prospects and all wonderful things and we got a couple of second rounders?!?!?!?
He didnt promise anything. He said the asking price was a 1st, he couldnt get it. I believe only 2 1st rounders got traded this year, Calgary’s and Ottawa. Calgary got Jokinen and Ottawa was desperation.

they were saying
Burke could have as much as $20M for free agents this summer. Don’t know where they got those numbers, but holy crap if it’s true…

Very few of the remaining players on the team are UFAs I think
by Its Cold In Here on Mar 4, 2009 4:59 PM EST up reply actions
true
but Kubina, Blake and Kaberle combined are what, $13M?
after that, Hagman and Toskala might push us to $20M, and then it’s alot of nickel and dime players.
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."
The Left Coast Lock
dunno
nhlnumbers.com is overloaded right now…
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."
The Left Coast Lock
OK
real rough math…with minimal understanding of the cap.
looks to me, if you take all the UFA and RFA off the books, we’ll have 8 forwards signed next year, 8 defencemen and two goalies for a total cap hit of $39.6M.
So, maybe not $20M, but $10-12M for sure. Of course, I could be calculating it entirely incorrectly.
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."

Burke said in his interview to Leafs TV that they have lots of cap space and plan “to be very aggressive” in the free agent market this summer.

Going home now. See y’all later.
Take heart, anyone who feels let down. This was never going to be Christmas for us. Burkie got some draft picks (about market value) for both Antropov and Moore and turned some cash into another draft pick and a prospect . Patience. Rome wasn’t (re)built in a day.

i'm around.
just watched the NHL network post TDD coverage.
Burke had some good comments about why he said the things he did, like Kabby’s value. Long story short, unless you were going to offer him what he wanted, don’t waste his time.
Sounds more and more like Kabby and Kubina aren’t going anywhere. ever
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."
The Left Coast Lock
ugh
well I am very happy with Kabby staying.
Kubina….. he’s been playing awesome lately and if he keeps it up through the end of the season, he’s gotta be very valuable come this summer. Defensemen who play as well as he does make a lot more than $5mill nowadays. Although he is a Ron Wilson favourite…..
I’m scared. We can’t have our defense look this much like it does already, next year.
nah...
i’m starting to see what Burke is doing. We’re not going to be built through the draft, and we’re not going to be built over 5 years time.
we’re going to be a much better team next year. With the stuff being said on Toskala now (apparantly, according to Burke, he’s been hurt for months, but battled through till deadline day so the Leafs could get another starter) I’m thinking our goaltending will be a non-issue next year…
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."
The Left Coast Lock
that's fine
but I can’t see how much better we’ll be. Toskala’s not the problem, no, but still we’ve been a poor defensive team this year while in the top 10 in NHL scoring. And keeping the defense pretty close to how it is now is going to change that for next year?
Toskala is totally the problem
don’t let the last 5 games fool ya.
He’s sucked big time all year long.
"We’re looking forward to building the type of team the Rangers are able to buy."
The Left Coast Lock
A bit more on Antropov
from Damien: At the end, he was traded because he wasn’t good enough for the dollars he’ll be looking for as a free agent to a team that’s at the very early stages of a long rebuilding period. And if he pans out for the Rangers and helps them win two playoff rounds this spring, the Leafs will get an additional fourth rounder.
So… if the season ended today, Moore fetched the 45th pick and the return for Antropov is the 49th pick and possibly a fourth rounder?
Looking at it that way the return on Moore may well be better than the return on Antropov. That just doesn’t seem right.
by Mirinov's Nose on Mar 4, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions
no it really doesn’t sound right, but whatever. If we can parlay one of those 2nds into an additional first, say the Antro pick, then it would work out to be Antro + whatever for a 1st, which is fine with me. At least these trades gave Burke some flexibility come draft day.
But man.
I need a drink.
Yeah, you’re right. Guess we’ll see what happens.
