Leaf Draft Pick Trading (Cliff / Burke era) revisited
Deadline day officially blows. Screw you and your salary cap Bettman.
With all the 'excitement' out of the way, it's probably a good time to take another look at what picks have been moved in the post-JFJ era and how we're looking for the 09 draft.
I've included the Toskala trade here since it involved an 09 pick, the rest are Cliff and Burke's moves so far. We're not looking as stacked as I was hoping for the upcoming draft, but a couple of shrewd draft day moves could change that. And Burke better get busy on restocking picks for the 2010 draft.

Thanks for the update daoust
Looks like four of the six players Burke has acquired so far will likely never put on a Maple Leafs jersey in the future. I also can’t remember a team trading for two players on the IR in the same trade in quite some time.

The deal wasn’t about getting players onto our roster, though. It was about the pick, and all those guys are just the baggage that came along with it.
Of course, and I’m well aware of the intent of those trades, especially the last one that netted the team a 4th round pick. It was a mere observation that clearly illustrates what Burke was trying to do – buying a draft pick. There’s only one major league sport that explicitly buys draft picks, so I’ll be curious if the league continues to allow creative trades that obviously try to circumvent costs. Tampa traded all those “players” so they can go under the set salary cap mark in order to get revenue sharing.

Apparently
Those kinds of deals are technically against the CBA. Mirtle’s post had some details on it.

Blaming the cap is one thing but its not the lone factor at play, we’re in this situation because Leafs management has dug themselves into it for quite a few years, its a deep hole and Burke/Fletcher isn’t going to ride in on a steed and magically fix everything in even two years worth of trades.
It’ll take time but its not impossible, yea the cap is slowing down the process and you can’t simply just throw money at problems anymore to make them go away, and yes its detrimental to a team such as the Leafs with deep pockets but whatever, I guess I’m not willing to sacrifice the health of the league just for Leaf success on the ice.

2 moves stand out
There are 2 moves there that really stick out a year later.
Getting a 2nd and 5th for Hall Gill is unreal. That’s more than Antropov .. boy the market has dropped in a year. And the Kilger for a 3rd drills that point home (more than Guerin)
The other is that we actually gave up a 4th round pick plus McCabe for VanRyan. While Mike has played well, he is (and was) often injured, and McCabe statistically was the better player.

It’s been indicated that the 4th round with McCabe was necessary to not only Florida to take him, but also as a show of good faith, since Florida got absolutely nothing from Kilger since he didn’t even report to the team.

Fletcher definitely did better than expected despite being handcuffed by JFJ.

Hate to continue to harp on the point but considering the trade market this year as compared to last year makes me even more pissed that Sundin masterminded the ’Let’s All Refuse To Waive Because I Think We Can Make The Playoffs And Then Who Knows What Might Happen’ movement, or LARTWBITWCMTPATWKWMH for short.
As much as we might hope that Burke can get high returns on players this summer, the way it looks now we can’t expect to see values as high as last years deadline anytime soon. And if Calgary doesn’t make the final and maybe even win the Cup I think GM’s will be even more reluctant to give up the future for immediate help.
I hope Burke’s public belittling of players doesn’t hurt his chances of signing quality free agents because I think that’s the only way this team is going to change much in the near future.
I can’t actually hate him for trying to drag the Leafs into the playoffs, especially since he wasn’t sure if he’d ever play again. But still, Why Mats, Why???

if mats was the only reason all those guys wanted to stay, why did tucker have to be bought out? and why do kabby and kubina still want to stay here? mccabe left only because it was made pretty f-in clear that he was not in management’s plans going forward, otherwise i think he would have stayed too. these are all adults and they made their own decisions – they don’t just do whatever mats tells them to. there are obviously many reasons why these guys want to continue to live and play in Toronto. they’re human beings with families to think about – they’re not hockey robots, as much as we want them to be.
and i’d rather things play out the way they did than to ever have to see mats wearing a fucking habs jersey. horrible. like chris higgins and that late first rounder (almost a 2nd rounder really) would have changed things for this team in any meaningful way.

Am I surprised more people haven’t brought this up? daoust is right – this was an absolute terrible offer for Sundin. As if Sundin’s trade would have propelled this team into a glorious rebuild is ridiculous, especially for such an offer like that proposed.

It sounds like it might be nothing unless the Rangers fluke their way to the ECF…COME ON RANGERS!

True, but I doubt the Leafs see it. The Rangers have to win two rounds in the playoffs, which at this point, looks suspect.

Wow, I thought the Rangers just had to get to the semis. If they have to win for us to get the pick … well we’re not getting that pick!
