Wonder what the idiots who always think the NHL is on the Leafs side will say about this?

Nooooooo
“We can confirm that the Toronto Maple Leafs have been sanctioned by the league for violations of league rules in connection with the club’s 2008 signing of Jonas Frogren, and that one aspect of the league-imposed discipline requires the forfeiture of the club’s fourth round draft pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired from Tampa Bay). We have no further comment on the matter.”
Not a draft pick!!!!
The Rangers’d better get to the Eastern final now…

Ugh...
After “buying” that 4th round pick from TB for $450,000 and now losing it plus the $500,000 fine, we’ve paid $950, 000 for Jamie Heward.
That boy better be worth it.

hemmmm
from the way you put it….
anyone else think Gary got mad that Brian bought that draft pick and did whatever he could to punish him?
Also, why did it take this long for the league to respond?

and the rangers got compensated for a pick for cherepanov.
does that mean we can get a pick for that kid who we lost in the KHL?
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
was
that kid signed?
If not, then yes, Burke should make a push for us to get a compensatory pick.

i dont think he had an NHL contract, but did cherepanov?

Vorobiev?
I doubt it. I’m guessing his heart condition would just be viewed as an injury, which happens unfortunately. See Luca Cereda and Karel Pilar. And an injury no doubt falls in a different category than death.
yeah, sure, i know it sounds terrible, but arn’t the Leafs left with the same thing in the end as the Rangers? One less prospect?
Why does the fact that he died, as tragic as it is make them eligible for pick compensation and an injury doesnt?

because
we’re the Leafs.
they’re the Rangers.

It’d be a slippery slope no doubt. Rangers lost Dan Blackburn with nerve damage in his shoulder. Brett Lindros and concussions. Injuries are injuries.
but
this happened outside the NHL, before the Leafs could sign him. Should be a different case than any injuries that happen as a result of playing in the NHL.
by Karina on Apr 1, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Has nothing to do with injury or death. The Rangers get a pick because Cherepanov was a first round pick who didn’t sign a contract. Vorobiev wasn’t. End of story.

cherepanov
did not have a contract, which is why they got a pick.
Luc Bourdon did have a contract, which meant the Canucks were just screwed.

have any other prospects been permanently lost to injury since Cherepanov? has a new president been set?
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
by JaredFromLondon on Apr 1, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions
no
and the NHL stated that the Cherepanov case was not to be used as a precedent, which makes no sense to me so……..
by Karina on Apr 1, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions
that makes no goddamned sense

Quitting due to a heart condition is a lot different than dying on the ice due to one…

yeah, and being compensated for either is stupid

The Rangers compensation had nothing to do with him dying. My understanding is it was a standard compensation pick due to him being drafted and not signing a contract.

I think so.
Basically, if you draft a guy in the first and he doesn’t sign, you get a second rounder. The Coyotes got one for Blake Wheeler.
The Rangers’ argument was that they drafted a guy who didn’t (couldn’t) sign and should get a pick. Kind of macabre, but they had a point.

but where do these draft picks come from / go?
Is there a pick added to the second round? Who gets the 4th round pick? Does it balance out?

The second rounder is an additional pick that the league gives out. So there can be more than 30 picks in the second round.
Same with the fourth, it just goes away.

Strangest draft day story I know of is from the 1982 entry draft:
Throughout each round of last summer’s entry draft at the Montreal Forum, NHL Executive Vice-President Brian O’Neill would turn to his right, face a large table with a St. Louis Blues logo in the middle and ask 10 empty chairs if they’d like to select a player. Unfortunately, furniture does not communicate very well and O’Neill was forced to continue on with the next order of claim…the organization – its proposed move to Saskatoon nullified by the NHL Board of Governors – had no arena to play in, no front office, no general manager, no coach and no scouts – thus, the empty chairs. The Blues didn’t get a single pick in that draft, but were bought by Harry Ornest in July of 1983 and the team managed to stay afloat in St. Louis.

Sorry, it was the 1983 entry draft. The blues didn’t get a single pick. Here’s the wiki.

Long story short, a young John Ferguson Jr. had traded all the picks for various shitty goaltenders.

JFJ was with the Blues so that would make some sense…the guys at St. Louis Game Time apparently wrote something about this but never posted it. They’re going to dig it out for us…
