The Richard Griffin comparison was said in jest – even I have my limits on making someone cry. ;) But I still think wins are one of the most overrated statistics in sport, especially when we start comparing an individual over another to determine who’s theoretically better or not. Raycroft’s peripheral stats (save percentage, for one) and observational assessments will attest to Raycroft simply being over-matched in his stay in Toronto.

Also: I couldn’t agree more… well… maybe not in hockey, but in baseball for sure. I hate wins as a statistic. I’m a Quality Starts man myself.

I've never really understood
Why people spend so much time reading sports articles. It’s a game, you know? I watch it and make my own judgements, and as soon as it ends, I’ve moved on with my life. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothign wrong with a good special-interest article, or a feel good story about a players background, but when it comes to flat-out writing about the game, and it’s laced with opinion, I’ve never seen the value. Why read what someone else thought of what happened?

There are far better people more versed in this subject matter than I who would likely offer you a more substantial answer, but it all comes down to dollars. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry and as such, demand is always present for over-bloated supply.

As it couldn’t effect me in the least.
I can understand why someone else might want to read. (maybe they missed the game, or enjoy someone elses thoughts) but the appeal never came to me personally to read it.

Quality Starts is good stuff. Though even they’re not immune to criticism since a pitcher who gets six innings of shutout ball will not get credit for a QS, while a pitcher who pitches 7 but allows 3 runs will get one.

Definately. 100%. It’s the public’s way of learning about the important events that happen in their world.

Sports journalism in the pure sense is not as important as so-called regular news. But because sports has pretty much penetrated every aspect of social, cultural, and even political life, I think it’s crucial to have responsible sports journalism. Ben Johnson and his subsequent media coverage is one of the most telling example I can think of at the top of my head.

That sports have definately impacted social and cultural life, but only on those who let it be that way.
Ben Johnson is a great example actually. Responsibe journalism outed him as a cheater. But so what? So some guy I never met cheated in a race. Does it effect my mood? Does it effect my ability to live my everyday life? No, nor should it. Ben Johnson wouldn’t give a crap if I got fired, and no one would ever read about it, unless I did it in an awesome blaze of glory.
I’m a different breed, you know? This stuff just never gets to me in the same way it seems to get to most people.
For me, personally, sports journalism doesn’t need to be more than a boxscore. This team won, and this team lost. This was the score. Then the game ended.

But it’s always informative to hear other perspectives, especially those that actually work in and around the actual industry. At least the runs are a direct result of the pitchers performance.
A ‘win’ hinges on the performance of the pitchers own team.
Giving up 3 runs and surrendering a quality start is solely based on the performance by the pitcher.

But the pitcher doesn’t surrender a QS even if he loses the game by giving up 3 runs. Unless I misinterpreted you on surrendering a quality start.

I misinterpreted you, actually.
The 7-inning thing is a breaking point, for sure, but QS isn’t the most hard-and-fast and only rule to go by.
K/BB ratio, WHIP, ERA and so on, it’s all part of the magic and splendor that is baseball statistics.
(I spend more time on baseball-reference.com than should be considered normal)

Well, baseball by far is leaps and bounds above hockey in terms of statistics. Hockey is still struggling to find alternatives to +/- and properly assessing a goalie’s effectiveness.
I love looking at K/BB ratio, WHIP, and GB% because it just shows how dominant Roy Halladay really is in comparison to every pitcher in the majors.

Baseball is built for it
Because it’s a team game based around a series of 1-on-1 matchups. Every play, every moment, every thing hinges around pitcher vs batter. None of the other major sports have that same dynamic. NBA, NFL, NHL, they all have so many variables that get in the way.
