Initially, the thought of leaving Toronto was very difficult, but it’s nicer in a lot of ways to play hockey in a different market. When you’re at the rink, you concentrate fully on your job, but there’s an opportunity to get away from the game when you leave. In Toronto, you’re consumed by the game every minute of the day. That definitely takes a toll on players.
From that same great Working Class Howard article. Looks like Burke will have to do a better job of finding professionals as opposed to fanboys. I guess it was too much to ask to work your butt off to do all that you could to avoid injury after injury (granted, some were just bad luck). If it's such a distraction playing in a city that cares about hockey then maybe that's a problem with your discipline.

i think i’m just cheering for mats anyway. maybe for luongo a little bit too, he’s too good a goalie to have so little post-season experience/success.
I think I saw Mats once during the Game 1. That probably explains why we never won the Cup with him.

i’ll be the first one to admit he looked like shit in game 1. but that doesn’t mean he’s the reason we didn’t win the fucking stanley cup in his time here. that’s ludicrous, and even you know that.

i think we can all agree that the extra long-layoff had much more of an impact on mats than anyone, especially mats, probably expected. he certainly doesn’t look like the same guy who scored a point a game last year and dominated play pretty regularly.
So how well did we do when he came back and took over for McCauley and Roberts? Mats scores very clutch goals in the playoffs but he was usually invisible for the other 55 minutes. Doesn’t mean I didn’t love him before he prostituted himself to Vancouver.
Right on, bro. Keep thinking that. I really enjoyed the Cup Roberts won in Toronto.

I remember that O’Neill one coming off of an turnover of his. I might be ascribing more blame to him than deserved but that last one definitely was his fault and oddly enough came from a failure to lift a G-D stick in front of the net which they still can’t do.

Sundin has the most goals scored in the third period than any other player IIRC. He scored most of those while in Toronto.
I hate him in a Canucks uni, and I hate that he wasn’t truthful (or changed his mind, whatever. another debate for anotther time…) but while he played in Toronto, he WAS NEVER the reason we didn’t win a cup.

I’ll give you OT, but GWG is a bad stat. On Tuesday I scored goals 3 and 4 for my team and we ended up winning 6-3 so I get credited with the GWG. But it was a 4-1 game when I scored it, it’s only because my team gave up two more goals that it stands as the winner. It’s not like I broke a deadlocked match.

But it’s a case of two things, Mats either scores the game winning goal or he pulls a Stempniak and you couldn’t find him with that big ass telescope they use to look at Pluto.

How odd….where was Captain Clutch’s point in the game where we got elimanted by the Devils with 6 shots?
Anyway, the defense of Sundin is almost as ridicilious because he never had any good linemates. Cause we all know that Moginly and Roberts were shit. We all know Poni has fallen completely to pieces without Mats.
Like I’m trying to explain I don’t hate the guy and that I don’t think he wasn’t clutch. He just had disappearing moments at crucial times, and he gets too much of a free pass from his lover boys that want Vancouver to win for him even though he’s done jack shit to get them where they are. Maybe if Mats contributed a bit more, I could cheer for them but while he continues to be useless I can’t bring myself to do it.

I’d say it was more about the entire group at the end. Mats was saddled with guys like Bryan “In one ear out the other” McCabe, Tomas “Sit quietly in the corner” Kaberle, Tie “Give me my contract!” Domi.
