The problem that people have with Second Coming is that it was 5 years after one of the best albums of all time, and all that time in between gave people the reason to expect something fucking massive. The thing is though, we did get something fucking massive and I can’t see why people hate it so much. Breaking Into Heaven alone is worth the price of the album.

Yeah, there is some shit on there (Tightrope), but I’d put some of the better songs up against the songs on the first album.

My roommate in university was the biggest Roses fan I’ve ever met. We went to the store to but the album the day it came, went back to her room to listen to it. She burst into tears halfway through Breaking Into Heaven.

Dean Brown and Gary Galley

Not sure if this was discussed in the game thread last night, but WTF? Brown and Galley are terrible. I almost feel sorry for Sens fans.

During the review of Crosby’s goal last night, Brown and Galley were convinced that the goal would not stand because Crosby interfered with Biron. These guys apparently do not know how the review process works. Is that too much to expect from two guys who get paid to talk about hockey and tell viewers what is happening during a game?

Near the end of the second period there was a penalty called against the Flyers. I knew this, because I saw a Penguin lying on the ice and the ref blew the whistle when the Flyers touched the puck. I’m no Veronica Mars, but I figured that one out all on my own. I had no choice actually, since Brown and Galley thought that the Penguins were getting a penalty and spent 15 seconds tracing it back to a mistake made a minute earlier. Because they were guessing? Flipping coins? Not paying attention? Checking out similar images on google?

Sorry for the rant. I wish I had another outlet for my views on hockey and sports media.

The talent gap in the NHL usually refers to the flotsam that fills up fourth lines. As these playoffs have revealed, the real gap might be between the two or three credible play by play and colour analysts and the dozens of others who somehow find themselves on air.

I’m not one to care about TV ratings, but it can’t be easy to draw an audience for a regional fourth ranked sport when the on-air talent sound like highschool AV boys trying to analyse their first cricket match.

Yup. Seeing how hard SJ has to work to beat the Ducks, I don’t think they can do that for three more games. Ducks move on to face Wings. Canucks get Chi/Cal.

Maybe because Dougy accepted the fact that the team was shit and wanted out? Or maybe because Dougy didn’t claim that he couldn’t imagine himself not going on the full journey with a team to win the Cup? Or maybe he wasn’t talking about retiring as a Leaf? You know instead of talking about how a team that was full of a bunch of lazy bastards who wanted everything on a platter for them had a chance at the playoffs when they really didn’t.

Toronto loves honesty (if you don’t work for the media) and Mats gave us the opposite and we still put it aside to give him a standing ovation in enemy colours in our own arena. But he plays for Vancouver, a team with a bunch of idiot fans who hate us for no reason. So why the fuck should I cheer for him to do something for them they he couldn’t do for us?

Dougie did ask to retire a Leaf when things went south back in ’95 or whenever the hell it was.

Between Stavro going bankrupt, Fletcher being told to sell everything that wasn’t nailed down and Mike Murphy coaching like Barry Melrose in Tampa Bay, there was no way Gilmour was retiring a Leaf.

Character?

They give a good effort and they try hard but character is about the last thing I would say the Canucks have. From Wellwood taking potshots at the Leafs to Sundin’s entire saga to Bieksa’s constant cheapshots to Kesler ripping on Backes’ wife character is something that they do not have.

Burrows? Mitchell?
Sure they get a couple of cheapies – usually Kesler and Bieksa, which ticks me off. But Mitchell, especially, is about as loveable as a non-Leaf defenseman could ever be. I also have fondness for O’Brien. His favourite player is Wendel Clark!

Haha

I know. But that just makes me want to give him a hug.
He’s shown some real growth in the playoffs. Nice outlet passes, and is finally learning not to take the dumb penalties. Sometimes you can see him standing there thinking, looking like he wants to do something stupid but, I’m sure, repeating Alain Vigneault’s voice in his head.

On the subject of Mats....

quite possibly one of the 5 greatest Leafs of all time.

If you deny that, you’re stupid.

He was an amazing player for the Leafs and was an integral part of this team

The Canucks are on a great streak right now, but facing off against the Blues is NOTHING like having to face Calgary or Chicago in the next round.

All that said, if you wish to talk Canucks, kindly do it over here

I was once an unabashed Sundin hater. I’m over him now, and I suggest everyone else do the same and leave Eyebleaf be to cheer on one of the greatest players we’ve ever had the good fortune to watch play.

how can you compare players of different eras, that we never saw play?

yes, some of those players won cups. in a 6-team league.

yes, mats is the all-time leading leaf scorer. he played in an era of longer seasons of course, but even still he’s had a longer and more consistent career than just about anyone.

totally subjective of course. but if you’ve only watched the Leafs from the 80s onwards, to say Mats isn’t one of the best 3 Leafs you’ve personally seen play, that’d be pretty surprising.

I read these lists and feel old.

Sittler doesn’t get enough love. I guess it’s a generational thing. He nearly won the Art Ross trophy and was crazy good.

Gilmour’s performance back in ‘93 was jaw dropping. I’ve never seen another player carry a team like that.

Salming makes Kaberle look like a minor-atom player. Dude could skate and gain the zone like nobody’s business. Was tough as nails too. Leafs all-time assist leader.

I have a love hate relationship with Clark. At his best, he was amazing. Unfortunately, he was hurt so often that he just became a shell of his former self. At his peak he was scary.

Vaive could hit, fight and score 50 goals. One of the few bright spots of the early 80s.

Lanny MacDonald almost made my list. I remember when he was chasing 50 back in the late 70s. That guy was a great sniper.

Mats’ career is easily number 1 for me, but in terms of peak performance, he comes in 6th or 7th on my list.

Turnbull and McKennie had huge potential and just never made the jump to the next level.

Randy Carlyle was another very talented Leaf D.

yeah, its hard to pick a player when you never got to watch him, for me Dougie and Clark were the catalists to my Leaf fandom. I was the perfect age in 93 to be smitten by them forever.
Lanny, Iafrate, Vaive, Salming, Sittler and Keon all get mad respect, but I cant say they were favourites when I never got to experience them

I wish I was old enough to remember Bobby Orr. He was still playing when I started going to Leaf games, but he only put in about 40 games between 1976 and 79.

I saw Dave Keon absolutely kill the Leafs once back in 1979 or ’80 when he played for the Whalers. My dad took perverse delight in the results. I still get angry thinking about it.
