This quote is encouraging:

"It is one of Jonas Gustavsson's most prized possessions, a Borje Salming blue-and-white jersey that he has owned for 'about 15 years'."

This quote is not:

"Leafs goalie coach Corey Hirsch has been in contact with Farjestad officials concerning Gustavsson."

Hirsch is a legend in Sweden for letting that goal in from Forsberg in 94…so as long as he doesn’t offer him tips on goaltending we are safe…

but he’s our goalie coach…. giving tips on goaltending is what he does…

by Karina on Apr 22, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

that’s a good tip right there: “do not give up goals”.

by lordosis on Apr 22, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

he should dress for practices in goalie equipment, play a little scrimmage, and then skate over to our goalies and say:

“See what I just did there? don’t ever do that.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought one of the things Gustavsson’s agent kept repeating was how important it was that no one tells his client to change his style and how he tends the net. I’m thinking Hirsch will be a guy who offers him support, training, and maybe even some technical advice, but leave him be for the most part. Similar to how goalie coaches left Hasek and Cujo alone, despite their unorthodox goalie styles. Or at least that’s my hope.

yes

that would be good. And I think, given what we’ve seen of Hirsch’s handywork, if we can sign a goalie who’s already confident in his style and doesn’t need training, it’d be a good thing.

As long as anyone we sign actually perfoms at a competant level, I don’t care about how they’re coached.

I’m sure Hirsch’s coaching extends to…“as soon as you think somebody is about to shoot get on your knees”.

gustavsson

Just read he has cant play for sweden at worlds, personal issues cited. Says family members illness.

by alskie on Apr 22, 2009 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

serious

that sucks for sweden – good for Canada.
Good for the Leafs – maybe we don’t have to wait to get his name on a contract.

I really wanted to get a look at what he could do, but family first, always

I wonder if Burke will be more reticent to sign him if he doesn’t get the chance to see how he plays at the Worlds. I guess he’s already said that Gustavsson is a premier goalie, or something to that effect, but I have a feeling that the Worlds were a big factor in the signing. Family does, of course, come first.

by JP Nikota on Apr 22, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

hmmm I don’t know that the worlds would be a big factor for Burke – did they hold any weight in his signing of Hiller?
Either way, I’m not holding my breath – I wouldn’t be surprised if Gustavsson takes his time making a decision now that he has a family illness to attend to.

Maybe Hirsch was providing advice on how to appear on a Swedish postage stamp?

Thanks bkblades. Shouldnt really say he is free to sign but I believe if he skips the worlds he is free to sign as per his out clause in his contract.

TSM is reporting that Gustavsson might stay in Sweden indefinitely for the time being because of this family issue/illness, which has turned rather serious.

Wow, I can't wait...

…for Hirsch to totally shit the bed on another Leafs goalie prospect! As long as we keep our goalies sub-par, no other team will steal them away from us! Excellent!

Im hearing that Gustavsson will play at the worlds afterall,so much drama!!!
Not sure if this is true but have read it on a couple of posts from other sites!!!
If this is true it is good news.

Burkie should talk to Wayne Thomas, about coming over and being the first real goalie coach for the Leafs,in how many years? Thomas was coaching for either the Rangers or Panthers. It would be beneficial to the Leafs to at least inquire.
