Hey! Look at that! It's exactly how many games the Habs won in the playoffs. Coincidentally, it's the number of Stanley Cups they have won since 1993.
The Anthropomorphic Mocking Numeral wonders what happened to the team that was supposed to sweep aside everyone to pick up their 25th cup in their '100th' season.
Why do you think that the Habs fell flat on their face?

The Habs are a disaster
Anyone notice how happy Glen Metropolit was during the handshake for his old Boston mates? You can see it here from 1:55 to 2:07. He seems genuinly thrilled about the outcome. He probably still has lots of friends over there and hates most of his his current teammates.

Karma: It's a bitch.
I have never been happier to see another NHL club swept ignominiously out of the playoffs.
Aside from the historical rivalry, there was something about this year’s bunch of Habs that made them that much more objectionable. Kostopolous’ cheap shots, Kovalev disinterestedly mailing in another NHL season, the hoopla surrounding the false 100th, the fans voting Mike Frickin’ Komisarek into the all-star game, the fans booing the U.S. National Anthem, the way they shattered the confidence of a 21-year old blue chip goaltending prospect. The arrogance of the “Drive for 25” when everybody who had any eye for evaluating talent could see that the Habs were over-rated, undersized and overly dependent on the freakish amount of power play success they had last year.
I loved getting to watch Michael Ryder shove one up the arse of his tormentors. I loved being able to look into Gainey’s eyes during one of the many, many close-ups on him in last night’s third period – and to be able to see that he KNEW that his days with the team were numbered because this team is going nowhere and fast. From top to bottom, all is in a shambles – team for sale, fans revealing their true bandwagon nature and/or utter inability to evaluate their own team’s lack of quality (and committed) talent, players full of quit, ten unrestricted free agents, a goaltender at war with the city.
I cheered very, very hard for the Habs to miss the playoffs entirely and was disappointed when they made it in. I strongly believe now it couldn’t have worked out better.
It has been said before, but the salty tears of disappointment wept by Habs fans are sweet ambrosia to me.
Also: hi everybody, sorry I haven’t been around much lately. Short version of long story: reality sucks. But I couldn’t miss dropping by on a day like today and offering up my .02 on this Happy Day.

I love that the habs and their fans are using the injury excuse
Cause we’re responsible for half the injuries, bitches!
its
flimsy at best
so they lost 3 good players… who knows how much impact Lang could have made since he was out for so long, he could’ve slumped just like Kovalev was going in the playoffs… yes losing Schneider and Markov hurt them but that’s only 2 players on a team of over 20… if anything this just shows that the team has no depth, you lose one or two key players and they crumble and fold like a cheap deck of cards
furthermore, no one on the team stood up and took charge, where the heck was there fearless leader Koivu? Or Kovalev? All Star Komiserak who did nothing else besides falling to the ice after 1 punch from Lucic and taking some cheap shots against him?
this team had absolutely no heart or grit, even if they went into the playoffs with a full healthy roster, they would never have made it pass the Bruins who have shown they are on a mission instead of like a team who feels they are entitled to win
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
the additions of Markov and Schneider may have pushed it to six games max
but there was no way in hell that team would have made it past the Bruins let alone to the cup final.
There was no tenacity, no never say die.
They came out flying last night and had every opertunity to take the game in the first. Instead, when the Bruins started to push back, they crumbled

Toronto Star comments make me laugh
Higher standards in Montreal.
Where would the big bad Bruins be without Chara, Wideman, Savard and Wheeler? That’s basically what the Habs dealt with. It could be worse, they could have missed the playoffs for 5 straight yrs since 2004…….1967.
Comparin Markov and Schneider to Chara and Wideman is ridiculous. Savard to Lang? Gimme a break.
Disappointed since 1984
it’s typical of them to overrate their players…Markov is hardly a Wideman…if he was on the Bruins he’d be number #3…heck I think he might not even be number one on the Leafs…And is Wheeler supposed to be Tanguay? HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

when they actually go at it one on one, Komisarek crumbles on the ice after one punch, Lucic has the decency to stop pummeling him soon as Komi hits the ice and what does Komi do? Hold onto Lucic’s jersey and tries to drag him down
then Komi goes ahead and tries to cross check Lucic in the face repeatedly when the game was clearly out of hand and Lucic doesn’t even want to fight him anymore

Its a sad day when the Habs superior skilled players lose to the meatheads that are the Boston Bruins. Lucic the decapitator running around like Sean Avery out there making a fool out of himself and endangering the lives of classy NHLers. Clearly the better team did not win in this series. Half our team was injured including our three highest paid players and our #1 centre and you can be sure if they had been in the lineup it would of been Montreal in four! All I can say is OLE OLE OLE!!!!!!!!! We’ve still got quadruple the cup count despite both being original six teams and we’ll win our next cup before before Boston ever does I’m sure!!!!!!! Now Gainey, resign ALEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. Hossa will look great in Habs red!!!!! We’ll be back to dominating and undressing the Bruins in no time!!!! GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

similar to the Leafs. Let the UFAs walk. Hand the team over to the younguns in the line up. Trade the assets you have left for young players.

No way Kovalev deserved the C at any time. If you don’t want Koivu to keep it, give it to Markov.

Chipchura has stalled. He had 3 assists in 13 games with the Habs, got sent to Hamilton where he put up decent, but not great numbers (14 goals in 51 games). I think he’s got third line potential, but not much more.

I would not
replace Price, the kid has shown he has ample potential, he’s only 21 but let’s face it, the Habs didn’t handle him properly since last year’s playoffs
the way I see it, he showed what he could do, everyone in Montreal got excited prematurely and they threw him head-first into the frying pan, he held up for awhile but he started buckling (which is alright given his age and inexperience), instead of bring him back and giving him a chance to gather himself up again, they just kept him out there in the fire and the fans didn’t help
he’s definitely struggling, even in this year’s playoffs but by no means did he lose the series

Think Gaborik would be a terrible signing for anyone who’s looking for top-line forwards.
Monstrously injury-prone and shows no willingness to be a leader in the locker room. He’ll score at a fair clip, but 50 points in 40 games is still only 40 games for the $6m+ he’ll be looking for.
I’m all for the Habs signing him. Sure he’d beat up on us once a season, but it’d guarantee they wouldn’t win anything for at least 6 years.

I don’t think the Habs are as bad off as people suggest. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving that they got knocked out in four, but…
Halak and Price is a great tandem in nets. Yes, Price may have issues but he’s still got enough upside to either sort it out in Montreal or be pretty decent trade bait if it comes to it (I don’t know if there’s ever been a time with so many teams needing goaltending. Demand is certainly high).
They also have lots of young talent signed to reasonable deals that can either make a go in Montreal or be packaged for a pretty nice return if Gainey feels the need to change the culture.
This may be the most economical free agency period in memory. Everyone knows the cap is shrinking, there are rumours of teams contracting. The Habs may be able to sign the guys they want to keep for reasonable dollars.
The biggest question mark in all of this is off-ice. Will the team be sold, will Gainey be retrained and can they find great French-speaking talent to run the bench and/or fill the GM’s role?
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...

I think Gainey’s gotta be gone. Whoever they hire as GM needs to be experienced, which is why I came up with Riseborough. Coach, well, I don’t think they should stick to a french speaking coach, that’s so narrow minded. What are they gonna do, the options are Mark Crawford, Bob Hartley and Michel Therrien. Whoever takes over that team needs to be bullheaded enough to stand up to the media, and I think we’ve got the best one for that kind of job here in Toronto.
by Karina on Apr 23, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not sure about Gainey. Maybe it’s because I’ve got a soft spot for the guy, but I don’t think he’s toast.
As for the coach, I completely agree it should be a merit hire, but it doesn’t work that way in Montreal. The new coach simply has to be completely bi-lingual. Full stop. There’s no other option for that franchise.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...

The only way the Habs could go with a unilingual coach is if the team was capable of going 74-8-0. They aren’t and therefore the coach will speak French or he won’t be considered as a candidate. Whether that’s right or wong is another matter.
Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...

There are some options. Not sure how much interest some of that cheap young talent will attract since, as you mentioned with Chipchura, some of it is trending downwards.
Gainey promised the fans a slow rebuild, tried to aim it towards a Cup this year, and sat pat for 2 straight trade deadlines. He has not been able to land a big UFA either. Slow and steady wins the playoff race but not the Cup.
Gainey will likely stick but his next coaching hiring is huge.
