Updated: Tyler Bozak Signs With The Maple Leafs

Well, it's 3am and I just got home. First thing I did was do a news search for Tyler Bozak, and as of 1 hour ago Sportsnet.ca is reporting that Bozak has chosen to join the Leafs. Just thought I'd break the news for the early birds!

I was wondering about this all night, but no-one new if he had signed and I couldn't get online at work. Hope it's true. Even if these guys (Hanson, Bozak...Gilroy) don't pan out, it's cool to see management going hard after these guys, and to know that these guys like what they're hearing.

PPP Update:  It's official now. WOOO! glove tap to Koopa Kid for posting the fanshot.

Although it was strange that the Sportsnet story mentioned that when they contacted Burke, he said he wasn’t aware of any deal being finalized. And also, that Bozak’s agent said the entire thing was negotiated over twitter.

Question

For the people that were upset that Burke didn’t get more than a couple of 2nd rounders and a 4th (oh, wait.. nevermind) at the trade deadline, do these 2 signing make up for it? They’ve each got to be considered at least as good as a 2nd round pick, no?

by daoust on Apr 3, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

Yes and no. This doesn’t get him off the hook for the deadline, since they’re two separate things. But in the big picture these two signings certainly help raise the optimism level.

Interesting that

both Leaf prospects Bozak and Ruegsegger had major injuries to their knees this year. Bad Denver ice? Hopefully, we’ll see both in Leafs blue in the near future.

Perhaps Burke should make a play at their linemate Rhett Rakhshani who is ranked number 4 in the Islanders system by HF.

Dobber's take on the signing
Remarkable – the Leafs are really starting to make some moves to improve what was recently a horrible future. Over the past six months, their pipeline has really improved, and this morning it will get even better. The most sought after undrafted college prospect, Tyler Bozak, has signed on. Using a formula that worked the the Ducks, GM Brian Burke is going after the hidden gems in the NCAA circuit. Potentially, in a couple of years he could be a second line center with two-way skill who posts 70 points. For the next couple of seasons though, I wouldn’t expect more than 45 points. Still, this move is a very positive one for a Leaf Nation that has not seen positives for years. Bozak highlights below.

I don’t know how much of a market there is for soft, 3rd line centres that turn the puck over endlessly with one more year on their contract.

He’s still put up a career season… (while playing over his head with players much better than him…)

Regardless of his actual talent level, the degree to which he tailed off in the latter part of the season has been disturbing. I wonder if he’s playing injured…

by koopa kid on Apr 3, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

did he tail off...

or did he merely revert back to his playing level?

I never saw him as much more than a third line center. And a soft one at that. Kind of like d-moore, who’s showing it’s more about the ice time than the linemates.

"Ninety percent of the game is half mental."
The Left Coast Lock

by blurr1974 on Apr 3, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

he’s not playing in front of the net any more, which was pretty much the only way he scored goals. The guy always had decent passing and skating, but the season has been a long one and with top line minutes I have to assume that he’s just not willing to pay the same price any more.

Also with the departure of Antro and the renaissance of Poni with Grabbo his linemates and play style have changed significantly. Still, he and Steen played with Devereaux for a fairly productive line under Maurice, and I’m surprised he hasn’t put up at least a couple more points.

by koopa kid on Apr 3, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

In the first 35 games of the season he played his stats were 35-9-21-30
In the 36 games following his eye injury he was 36-6-16-22

So he’s tailed off some, but not unreasonably.

His worse stretch was the first 20 games after his injury when he was 20-5-6-11. He’s got 9 points in the past 15 games

That said, I reckon he’s gone.

by Polecon on Apr 3, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps

he’s who Burke was thinking of when he was warning players not to get comfortable, because they could be bought out or sent to the Marlies.

Please do an updated assessment of how many more like this we can sign yet? Are we at 50 or have these two signings been drawn up in a way that give us room for one more? Seriously inquiring minds want to know.
You know what? I’m starting to think that the atmosphere at the ACC (barring the first ten rows) next year might look and feel like what the Blackhawks crowds are like nowadays. I’m totally up for a Leafs/Hawks cup final tilt in 2 or 3 years or so.

The other thing about the goaltending...

I don’t know why we don’t go out and sign Free Agent Swedish Goalies from the SEL… their season is over too… we could do the same thing that we’ve done with the college players from the states.

Sign them to deals for next year and offer them an ATO for the rest of this season.

Then we can let Gerber and Cujo walk… and hope we find the next best thing. If we don’t? C’est la vie.

checked the link to sportsnet.Excellent news on the Leafs getting Bozak signed.I also noticed several posters at Sportsnet saying the next move after Gilroy should be a Golie.
Okay, remember the name Jordan Pierce. Notre Dame, set a record this season with 8 shutouts.

I am not saying the Leafs are a lock to get this kid.I don’t even know if he is still available, since the Bozak signing didn’t get posted until 3 am my time(I’m living in enemy territory…calgary, home of the most over rated team in the NHL).Don’t know if the Leafs are in talks with this kid, but….

Also, remember their 2nd pick last June.Jimmy Hayes is being described by some,as the steal of the draft part two…to go along with Luke. When someone as esteemed as Scotty Bowman says the Leafs got the steal of the draft in Luke Schenn, you listen.

stajan stays

They need centres.Hanson is a centre and yet he played wing last night.Where will Bozak line up? This has been a pet peeve of mine for years.Too many players not playing their natural position.

When I picked up NHL 08 and 09,and went to see what positional moves I had to make, they had no right wingers listed.

Too many players played above their abilities,in regards to thier position on the depth chart. All of these moves by Burke are meant to remedy that. They may already have their #1 centre,if he would get the chance to prove it.Jiri Tlusty may or may not be the #1 inside of a year. But it will be entirely up to him

future goalie?

The Leafs also have James Reimer in their system.I saw him play a few times out here, and he looks good for at the very least a back up role.Just don’t know what year he will get to the Leafs.

Could a mega deal be in the works for draft day? All of the Trade deadline day pickups will be gone except for Reitz and Rogers. If Burkie adds Kaberle and /or Kubina to the list of players dealt, they could have as much as 28 million to play with this summer.
Cammalleri is NOT a # 1 centre or #1 line player…..but he is close. I personally believe that the Sedin twins will both be Leafs on July 1st. and Rick Nash will be signed next summer,if not earlier traded for.

by wayne scarlett on Apr 4, 2009 9:45 AM EDT reply actions
