What’s the old saw – 90% of successful coaching is having a good goalkeeper? I suspect Maurice’s “success” with the Canes is directly attributable to Ward rediscovering his game.

Honestly between Detroit and Pittsburgh I’m torn.
Detroit’s already won a bunch of cups and they’re already the best so it’s not like their fans could possibly gloat any more, whereas if Pittsburgh wins it’ll be the 1994 Rangers all over again and we’ll never hear the end of it ever.
On the other hand, if Hossa ditched Pittsburgh to play in Detroit and Pittsburgh won? That’s pretty humorous in my book.

There is no way in hell I’ll be cheering for a team that, if they won, would put the Leafs as the team going longest without a Cup (tied). No way. Never. Can’t do it.
Go Wings, I already know how it feels when you win.
but
this’ll put the wings 1 back (I think) from the # of cups the Leafs have….
and they could easily win another one before the Leafs do…

This would be Cup #12 for Detroit. The Leafs (as the Leafs) have 11 – NO

But the Wings have the best shot of any team, albeit in 50 years or so, to surpass the 24 Cups won by the Canadiens. And that’s something I believe we can all get behind.
Wings fan by birth. Leafs fan by empathetic association.
We all know those cups are tainted by the unfair drafting practices they had in the old days. If the Leafs always had first shot at anyone coming out of Ontario they woulda been a powerhouse too.

Truth is, this process as you describe it never really existed. The Habs simply built the best farm system the world ever saw. It was put together by Leaf castoff Frank Selke, who would have done the same for Toronto had Conn Smythe been able to keep his ego in check.
Leafs had bird dogs all over Ontario, Habs the same in Quebec.

As to more Cups in the future
I am very curious to see what will happen when age catches up to a certain Mr. Lidstrom. Having an umpteen-time Norris winner in the lineup makes filling out the rest of it significantly easier.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
I’m already fearing that day. Once he’s gone, a goalie like Osgood isn’t going to cut it anymore. But I’m confident that in one of the next few drafts, we’ll pick up Lidstrom II in the 6th or 7th round.
Wings fan by birth. Leafs fan by empathetic association.
I loved Yzerman, but I think Nik has been more important to the Wings that even Steve.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Yzerman and Ilitch got them out of the “Deadwings” era which helped the team get into position for the ‘93 draft and set the foundation for the reemergence of the Wings and the first 2 Cups. Listrom as we know him today didn’t emerge until the ’99 – ’00 season.
