Impact on the Leafs Legacy: This Year's Final 4
I know many people think that we, as fans of the Blue and White, are too Leaf-centric.
This is totally and utterly true. It is not that we are not aware of other teams in the NHL, it is just that we don't care nearly as much about them. How does this year's final four impact the Leaf Legacy? Let's discuss.
Let's look at who is left:
Detroit
Chicago
Pittsburgh
Carolina
Now let's look at each one of them winning the Cup and how it would affect the Leafs standing in History.
Detroit - The class of the league when it comes to all levels starting with the Owners, Management, Coaching, Scouting and players. They have just been amazing in all areas. One thing though... if they win the Cup this year, they will no longer be tied with the Leafs with 11 cups. They will take their 12th cup and be the second overall franchise. Are we really that bitter that we would cheer against such a great organization, cheer against a team that obviously deserves continued success?
Damn right we are that bitter.
So we can't cheer for the Redwings.
Chicago - Everyone is cheering for Chicago. That upstart young team with great talent, playing beyond their years. They relish the opportunity to have to go through the Juggernaut that is Detroit on the way to their first cup in 48 years.
There, I said it. The reason why we cannot and must not cheer for Chicago to win the Cup. They are the only team with a record of futility that is longer than the Leafs. How could we, who take such a small comfort in the fact that we only have the second longest drought in original 6 history(especially after those F*CK!NG Blueshirts won it in '94) cheer for the Blackhawks? Simple, we can't.
So the Cup winner has to be from the East, Right?
Let's look at Carolina. First, we Leaf fans have a long memory. The last time we got to a Conference Finals was in 2002 where we lost to... the Carolina Hurricanes. The one year in recent memory that we had a pretty decent team, and lost to this team who's fans think that going fast and turning left in a car is a sport.
With my Google-Aided memory, Carolina lost in 5 games to Detroit. Detroit, a team the Leafs ALWAYS play hard... I think we could have done better than losing in 5 games. (also note, winning the Cup that year would have put us at 12, and Detroit would only be going for it's 11th this year.) To top it off, the Coach we ran out of town last year is at the helm(and he was also at the helm when they beat us in 2002.) That smirky bastard who couldn't keep a line combination for more than half a period while in T.O. is just basking in his success. Also, this sunbelt City won a cup only 3 years ago! Travesty!
So we therefore cannot cheer for them. (Am I starting to sound like Vizzini from TPB?)
Now, that leaves us with Pittsburgh. Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar, Fleury, Staal, Kunitz, Letang... the list goes on and on for good players. They have almost lost their team, their owner is arguably the third best player of ALL TIME, they have sucked for so many years and have picked so many good players, they went through the worst experience last year of coming within 2 wins of hoisting the cup. They have only won 2 cups in their entire history - no threat there. They are the team many fans have adopted, to live vicariously through. They would be the perfect team to cheer for. I have only two words to refute that.
Hal Gill.
So is the question: who do we cheer for to win the Stanley Cup this year?
No, the question is who do we cheer against the least.
Me, I can live with Hal Gill hoisting the cup... it is more palatable then the other three options.

Actually…our franchise has 13 cups (one as the Arenas and one as the St. Pats). If the Wings do repeat, they only pass the old Ottawa Senators. (Although I agree with the not wanting this to happen part…)
Carolina…no can’t cheer for them. That whole Paul Maurice thing.
Got to go with either Pittsburgh or Chicago. Chicago winning will provide that much more motivation for the Leafs to end their own drought! And…if Pittsburgh can figure out how to win it all despite Hal Gill, I’ll be that much more impressed.
I have to stay with 11, because if we concede that Toronto Hockey teams have won 13 cups, we have to grant additional cups to Montreal, and I am certainly not prepared to do that.

Welcome
Thanks for joining.
You’re right that the Leafs do have 13 Cups as much as people that hate facts try to pretend otherwise (Cox). I hope the Swine Flu can intervene but if not I think Detroit is the only way to go.
But no disrespecting Hal Gill.

Root for Chicago. Forget longest drought that shit is weak sauce, look at how drafting young players has turned around Chicago and get ready for that to happen to us.

I would like to see a Pitt-Chi final, Pitt winning, but with significant enough injuries to their lineup which requires Machine Gun Andy Wozneiwski to be called up and find his way on the team photo so we can all laugh endlessly, and Cox can remind us about how good he was and how Fletcher ruined the team by letting him go.

Minus the bit about the Woz, I’m totally in agreement. I want the Detroit team bus to drive off a cliff, and for Chicago to lose to the winner of the East. For the sake of potential bitter feelings towards Paul Maurice, I sure hope that means losing to Pittsburgh.

I’m going for the Wings. It will mean that nothing’s changed over the past season. I can live with the Wings passing us even though I don’t consider them winning this year passing us. Being second doesn’t count for much anyways.

It does when you’re third…
Even though they don’t really pass us this year, they just pass the total earned as the Leafs – as has been said.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
dont they have a wack of contracts on the brink though?

Chelios will sign for 3 quarts of formaldahyde and the blood of a young virgin girl.
Conklin will be overpaid by someone and leave.
Hossa, I don’t know. If Detroit win the cup this year, then he could sign a big multi-year contract with someone else. If they don’t, then same again next year.
The others will re-sign, I think. Maybe one of them will get an offer too good to turn down, but I doubt it.

All of those guys except for Hossa are more minor role players, but if the Wings were to lose them, I think they’d have a tough time filling in the holes. I mean, Montreal and Ottawa both gave up what they thought were just peripheral role players, and look just look at the mess. I do agree, though, most of them will be back.
They’ve got a pretty good farm system, from what I hear.

Well Then
I didn’t realize my somewhat tongue-in-cheek post would generate this many responses.
That’s actually pretty cool.
To be honest, I hope Chicago can beat Detroit, for purely monetary reasons(I have 5 Chicago players in my Playoff pool and zero Detroit players.)
For the same reason, I would like Pittsburgh to win.
Unfortunately, I think Detroit is going to provide the same lesson to the Hawks as they provided to the Pens last year.
Oh, and if the resident experts say its 13 cups, then I’ll go with that. It’s just really unfortunate that my grandfather wasn’t even born when they won their first 3.
Still Cheering for the Pens, tho.

One more thing...
… that’s kinda sad. If the Wings win the cup this year, if we total our cups with theirs, we have one more than the Habs. Blech
